More clicks. Each redesign features more clicks for users to do same things as before, which means more ad impressions. New reddit is a good example, you click on a post and it opens a lightbox, but to read the comments you have to click again, then if you want to continue reading a thread of comments you gotta click again, etc etc. Irrespective of how vocal the opposition is, the overwhelming majority of users simply accept it and use the new version, so there's no downside for the company. It is awful.

If we're talking Facebook, they are constantly adjusting bits of the interface to see what drives more click-throughs, likes, and general engagement with advertising.

E: As an example Facebook collects telemetry on how long people hover over videos in their feed while scrolling down. Video advertising can be more profitable, so they redesigned the feed so that videos work better. (And also published some very selective statistics about engagement with video content, so every advertiser and news site suddenly started creating a deluge of video content. This was some years ago)

it's this, and they'll push different interfaces to different people, informed by all kinds of tiny little metrics you'd never even consider to be revealing. literal ai mind control. the future's so bright i gotta wear shades

Because they represent data across many orders of magnitude and would be unreadable with linear scales.

Is there a good "recommend me a very specific product" thread anywhere?

In case there isn't: I want to get my father-in-law like, the simplest imaginable mp3 player. He's got Parkinson's and dementia (and a host of other issues), so it needs to be sturdy, have big physical buttons, be dead simple to operate, and...that's about it. Doesn't need a screen. I want to load it up with a bunch of songs so he can just put in headphones and push one button. I basically want a portable/pocket-size version of the iGuerburn simple seniors music player. Anyone have any ideas?

The second graph is legitimately more useful.

We’re not even looking at a curve that people were supposed to be trying to flatten. If people believe that the logarithmic graph is a flat curve and the linear one isn’t, layering another misconception on top does not improve the matter.

The whole “flatten the curve” rhetoric should have been publicly executed in April, but I’ll get back to that.

Why is the second graph more useful? The spread of infectious disease in a vulnerable population is exponential. An exponential function plots a straight line on a logarithmic graph. The slope of the line is related to the exponent of the logarithm.

The logarithmic graph readily shows that the U.S. has been under more or less exponential growth this entire time. It started with a large exponent in April and transitioned to a smaller exponent at the end of March/beginning of April.

On the linear scale, this is all hidden. If one didn’t know any better, it looks as if the U.S. had zero cases till the last week of March, when in fact that’s when the growth situation improved, and it improved drastically, but not quite to the point of decline.

That inflection point makes it clear that the U.S. could have beaten this thing. If it was possible to bend the line that much, it was possible to bend it just a little bit more and save hundreds of thousands of lives. “Flatten the curve” should have been loudly disavowed and replaced with a greater goal.

That’s the thing about exponential functions. You either have all the things in short order, or you have none of the things. There is little ground in the middle.

It has been said that “the greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function”, but that is not something that can be fixed with inferior graphs.

I have a specific behavior I'd like to learn more about, but when I try to look it up I keep getting stuff about white noise and ASMR.

When I'm thinking about something I've done that I find embarrassing or cringey (could be anything from some dumb teenage poo poo to saying something stupid in front of my boss) I get this uncomfortable feeling that wells up inside of me, and the only relief is to make some kind of noise. Could be a word, a piece of a song, a grunt, whatever--doesn't seem to matter what as long as I vocalize something. The bad feeling immediately goes away when I do this. If I try to hold it in I just get more and more uncomfortable. What's going on here? Is it possible to have very light OCD? I don't feel like I'm obsessing over anything.

Hold on tight!
I just woke up to my phone and power strip both making a consistent beeping sound, a short double beep (or more of a boop, really). When I unplugged my phone the beeping stopped and would start again when I plugged it back in. I turned off the power strip, and the beeping stopped. The strip seemed very hot.

My guess is that it's a warning sign that the power strip is in dangerous condition, but I wanted to make sure. I've found some Q&A threads online that seem to agree, but none of them fit my situation perfectly.

Bleak Gremlin
Google the exact model number of the power strip and "beeping noise" and you'll get the exact reason. Your initial suspicion is probably right, but just double check.

You can also get the user manual for the power strip by searching for the model number and adding "filetype:pdf" at the end.

Huh, I have something similar but it usually manifests in me shouting a curse word or shaking my head back and forth. It's as if remembering an embarrassing moment feels like stubbing my toe. I've never even thought to "hold it in" because it's out before I can think.

I normally don't do this around people but it's 2020 and I haven't been around people in months so I'm worried about how this will go in the future.

Does anyone remember this really strange (I think goon-made) music video?

Here's what I remember about it:

  • The singer is a goony guy with black hair and a leather trenchcoat. He spends most of the video just standing still and staring into space while singing.
  • A CG animated Anubis appears out of nowhere and steals the girl in the video and I think is eventually defeated by the singer? Or its revealed the singer is actually Anubis in disguise or something?
  • I was certain it was named "The Darkness" but there's already a band and countless other songs with that name so it's a bit hard to find!
