thanks, I live in a pretty cold climate (MN), I have a regular bedsheet and then a duvet with cover, but it'd be nice to have another layer in the winter. It seems like a throw would actually work fine, instead of getting a full sized 90x90 inch blanket.

I had these three glass block lamps earlier in the thread and was asking about smart bulbs. I ended up putting two in the bedroom and using small decorative incandescent bulbs in those.

I did get a smart bulb for the one in the living room for kicks and because fun lighting really cheers me up in virus quarantine life. I splurged on a Lifx “color candle” and it’s really rad. I had to modify the lamp base a little to accept the bulb, but I think it works well in a blown glass lamp. The bulb has this complicated interface that lets you “paint” different colors on it so you can make multicolored effects with a single bulb. Would recommend. Keeps my neon clock company. Apartment looking like a dive bar/ice lounge now.

The Zillow search term of the day is "Charleston single"

Wikipedia posted:

A Charleston single house is a form of house found in Charleston, South Carolina. A single house has its narrow side (often two- or three-bays wide) with a gable end along the street and a longer side (often five-bays) running perpendicular to the street. The house is well-suited to long, narrow lots which were laid out in early Charleston. Despite the popularity of the story, single houses were not built to avoid taxes that were, according to the tales, based on the width of the house; no evidence supports anything about such fanciful myths.[1]

Although the form can be found across historic Charleston in a variety of styles (e.g., Federal, Greek Revival, and Victorian), the consistent feature is interior layout. A front door on the long side of the house, halfway along the side perpendicular to the street, opens onto a short central hall and staircase. There is one room on each side of the hall, that is, one toward the street and one toward the rear of the house. The result is a building which is only one room wide when viewed from the street, giving the form its popular name. Each floor contained two rooms, and the floorplan was reproduced on each upper floor.

Although not a part of the earliest single houses, later buildings had two- and three-story porches, known locally as piazzas, added. The piazzas always appear on the side of the house with the front door which, to take best advantage of local winds, will be the south or west side.[2]

Service areas were often located in separate buildings behind the house. A single house would typically be built along one edge of a property, leaving a carriage way along the opposite side of a narrow lot. A piazza, if part of the house, would run the length of the house along the side yard which could be entered from the street. Alternatively, most single houses with piazzas have what appears to be a front door immediately on the street. However, the "front door" is in reality merely a screen between the public sidewalk and the private piazza. The actual front door for the house is located halfway along the piazza.[3]

These were the rich person's answer to shotgun houses and as such are much larger and fancier (and more expensive) than their single-story counterparts. A typical Charleston single has a dining and living room on each side of the center staircase with two bedrooms on each of the upper floors, and then the kitchen/baths/laundry/family room/etc added to the rear.

We're just wrapping up our huge redecorating project and thought I'd share some of my favorite accent pieces/purchases to date. The overall feel of our home is very neutral, but with lots of earthy textures and natural materials (marble, travertine, bone inlay, leather, boucle, stone washed linen, etc.). Not shown here, but a few of our rugs have dark olive tones which makes the rooms feel more cozy.

We ordered the bone inlay table in the back, the smaller side table, and the leather lamp.

This fireplace cover also doubles as a heavy duty doggie gate to keep my pup from running out the front door.

We already had a smaller frame TV, but got a larger one for the living room. Worth every penny, imo. For those who aren't familiar, it's a TV that looks like a piece of artwork when it's not in use. You can hide the wires in the wall so it looks like framed art, customize the style of bezel and buy art files on Etsy or do an art subscription through Samsung. I don't know much about the voodoo behind it, but the screen really does soften and look like a piece of artwork.

This coffee table was the best Craigslist find - the taupe veining in the marble is so good.

Surprisingly good Target finds from Studio McGee collection.

I've added some wine racks to the interior and converted this to a bar cabinet with pretty tray and decanters on the top.

Purchased these two pieces of tree artwork.

A few textured vases:

I have a suspicion this may look dated in a few years and is borderline basic bitch territory, but for now I can't wait to curl up in this enormous goopxCB2 chair.

We just hung up this huge 73" x 49" painting this weekend and I just love everything about it. Second pic is from the shop, shows the scale although I've styled it very differently. It works really well with our grey distressed velvet couch, light tan area rug and darker tan boucle throw pillows.

The prettiest lamp and side table.

Also took advantage of the Parachute bedding sale.

Not my house (nor my Eames chair, alas) but we scored this marble coffee table used for $200.

Final big purchase was a piano which will be part of our Christmas gift to our kids. I've always loved the look of vintage upright pianos, but my husband says I move furniture around too much and tuning would be too burdensome . We decided to go with this Kawai digital piano with a more matte black cabinet.

We tried to get most things used/vintage from Craigslist/FB Marketplace, but I'm happy to provide sources if I have them.

Wow. IT's been listed for sale since 2009. That's a lot of disrepair and neglect for a mansion built in 1909.

The back porch area is so big and nice. I want to set up some air mattresses and a nest of blankets, please, thank you. I never thought I'd have to weed the bricks first though. :/

Oh good, a place for ghosts to ouija board their thoughts.

[yes that's a legit IG user name but the account is privated so I didn't scrub it out.]

Tiny door chalk not enough for your ghosts inner tormented diatribes? Here's a larger piece to spawn their burning missives on!

The one pretty room. The rest are voids of white and p word colored stains on the walls. The pyromaniac in my loves that there's a fireplace. Yes, finally I can move on from candles to massive piles of red hot bright roasty fire.

This is surprisingly nice. For an 8 bed and bath monstrousity, I would've thought there was some gargantuan kitchen that's never used, 12 foot diameter island to boot.

I get that it's a large building and hard to heat, but god. Drop ceilings? You bought a loving mansion and installed drop ceilings?

Heheh tiddy lights.

Does someone know what that brown ceiling disk is? It's in another room too, I think. Noveau riche chandelier replacement? :v:

I want to know if this was really simply a family house or did they rent it / use it for commercial purposes. Also 6 acres of lawn, which seems hideous to care for, but running around like a lunatic on private land sounds wonderful. I miss frolicking.

apparently it was last used as the office for a non-profit, so it was last renovated for commercial purposes, hence the drop ceilings and code-compliant fire protection and whatnot

Seems pretty meh to me. The railings are intricate and it has some nice woodwork but otherwise I don't see anything unique other than the fact that it's huge.

Keep the façade, turn it into apartments, and build some low-income housing on the 6 acres surrounding it.

Both prices seem a hair high to me (depends on your location though) but not too bad if you like the pieces. They both look like they are decent quality.

The credenza (1.) looks like the left side drawer and right hand cabinet doors are askew. Maybe they’re off the track or could have some damage? Hard to tell, but if anything is broken or if it has significant wear then I’d think it should be cheaper than $400. Looks like a high quality office piece.

The grain pattern on the chest (2.) is cool, and it looks like it’s either in immaculate condition or has been freshly refinished.

Functionally I like storage units with drawers/cabinets so I can set things on top of them. But chests are cool too for blankets and such.
