I watched zero punctuation(and still do occasionally) and since both of them were on the escapist, I ended up watching some of his stuff. His comic and movie reviews were average but watchable. Then he had some weird video with bad cgi or something. I stopped watching him. Then I find out that apparently poor people deserve to die, and I now actively do not watch his stuff.

Can we further this avoidance pattern by ending discussion?

I did read MovieBob's review of Batman v Superman earlier. It's a tiny bit, uh, overwrought?

quote:

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE is a travesty wrapped in a disaster inside an obscenity. It is steaming, rotten, sunbaked, oozing poo poo. As a critic, I can’t conceive that we’ll see a worse major studio movie this year. As an observer of the film business, I’m perversely fascinated to know what happens next now that one of the biggest studios on the planet has built multiple Summers worth of release slates around follow-ups to what’s turned out to be a Hindenbergian catastrophe. And as a comic book fan I am… suddenly feeling very, very old. And tired. I imagine it won’t last, but… for now… “tired” would indeed be the operative loving word.

The only time I watched Movie Bob was his videos on the Escapist on monster movies and I got to the point where he said something in one of them that made me go "...Oh." and I stopped watching things he made. This is also in the same relatively hazy time where everything Yahtzee was putting out was starting to blur together and get boring for me and Jim Sterling left the site for Destructoid. I then spent the next 10-ish years Movie Bob free until this thread reminded me that he exists and is a eugenicist who has Weird Thoughts on the sexual politics of meal time.

Limited options. Doug got popular because he was basically one of three people doing what he did at the time he was first doing it, the other two being Spoony and James Rolfe, and the three of them basically settled the unexplored frontier. In short order, more people flooded into the market they'd created and quickly starting doing things better than them and evolving the whole atmosphere around them.

Doug stagnated and was left in the dust (artistically, I mean, he's still a stupid big draw for some reason), Noah buckled under the pressure, had a meltdown and left the game for good, and James realized the times were a changing and tried his best to change with them.

If you liked The Nostalgia Critic 10 years ago, I don't think anyone would blame you. If you liked The Nostalgia Critic 5 years ago, people would probably look at you a little sus, but not really hold it against you. If you like The Nostalgia Critic today, then you're a lost goddamn cause.

Yeah, Blip going under and all his compatriots and competitors taking a deep breath, jumping to YouTube and figuring out how to work The Algorithm was one of the worst things that ever happened to Doug... outside of that whole thing of all those people coming forward and revealing that he was a willing cog in a company that systematically abused its talent, focused all its time and energy on trying to hide and compartmentalize that abuse from the outside world and its own talent, and also knowingly employed and protected a sexual predator. 372 pages already released their first episode on RP2, they haven't quite clocked that they're not supposed to like Wade this time because he's written exactly like he was in the first one. Also self awareness is also the last thing anyone expected from an Ernest Cline novel, this should be a fun ride.

Heres a spoiler for an extremely dumb background detail:

In Ready Player Two a new technology is discovered that lets you record playback and share your memories as fully immersive vr experiences like in that one episode of black mirror. It becomes a huge hit and one of the popular uses of this technology is that it allows mothers to record their own labour so that someday their child will be able to experience THEIR OWN BIRTH.

I've been mulling over the prospect of making an actual 372 Page thread and have an OP half-typed up that i just gave up on earlier this year. Maybe I should take a swing at finishing it now that they've returned to the Clineverse.

Also yeah, not to spoil anything but RP2 is literally just RP1 all over again to the point where it willfully ignores all the established wordlbuilding details of how RP1's virtual world works in order to roll out a new Slightly Better version of it for the sequel and prove definitively that Ernest Cline has no idea how capitalism, socio-ecconomics, future-socio-ecomonics, or even just how a basic market supply chain works.

It is straight up Malibu Stacy with a new hat from the Simpsons.

I just started it myself because I feel I need to be punished, and it’s not at all obvious that the main character is supposed to be unlikeable or that there will be a payoff to him being a selfish idiot because that’s exactly what he’s like in the first one. There’s a part in the beginning where he gets even with anyone who made fun of him online by suing them into poverty or ruining their online accounts, and it made me think that Cline was engaging in some wish fulfillment and nothing more.

Cline DMCA'd people who posted excerpts making fun of Ready Player One and Armada in the past and has spend much of the last week since Ready Player Two's debut DMCA'ing people who have posted excerpts making fun of that book as well. It is 100% unsubltly Cline going "this is what I would do to people who mock me if I could" and it's super creepy.
