Honesty given the half measures implemented even in most democratic controlled states I have a hard time believing it wouldn't still be a thing. It probably would be better controlled, but not beaten.

We would have had a pandemic no matter what, but if Hillary were president I would guess that tens of thousands fewer people would have died. In this hypothetical I assume anti-maskers are still a thing and the 2018 blue wave never happened, but we would have had some semblance of a federal response to the pandemic instead of nothing.

See also the abysmal performance of Hillary's ideological counterparts in Europe such as liberal technocrat and Roman sun god Jupiter Macron in France.

And he even had a legislature controlled by his party, which a Hillary Clinton administration wouldn't, although I suppose her executive orders might be upheld 4-4 in the supreme court until Ginsberg died and then she started losing every case 4-3. Arguably the pandemic might even be worse under her since she'd be unlikely to get even the first round of stimulus passed, so ymmv on whether her ability to use executive orders and the DPA while Ginsberg was alive would outweigh the stimulus.

What we had was literally worse than nothing since Trump's administration started seizing medical supplies and ventilators and redistributing based on patronage instead of need. This is corrosive to cooperation, the thing that is most needed to get an infectious disease under control, because the states and federal government all started looking at each other as enemies. That's how we got poo poo like states importing supplies in secret since they were afraid that the federal government would seize them on entry if they knew about it.

That number is wrong, but most Republicans seem to feel the election was stolen. It's not great.

quote:

(Reuters) - About half of all Republicans believe President Donald Trump “rightfully won” the U.S. election but that it was stolen from him by widespread voter fraud that favored Democratic President-elect Joe Biden, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll.

The Nov. 13-17 opinion poll showed that Trump’s open defiance of Biden’s victory in both the popular vote and Electoral College appears to be affecting the public’s confidence in American democracy, especially among Republicans.

Altogether, 73% of those polled agreed that Biden won the election while 5% thought Trump won. But when asked specifically whether Biden had “rightfully won,” Republicans showed they were suspicious about how Biden’s victory was obtained.

Fifty-two percent of Republicans said that Trump “rightfully won,” while only 29% said that Biden had rightfully won.

Asked why, Republicans were much more concerned than others that state vote counters had tipped the result toward Biden: 68% of Republicans said they were concerned that the election was “rigged,” while only 16% of Democrats and one-third of independents were similarly worried.

Out of curiosity, how many Democrats thought that Trump stole the 2016 election? I assume it’s less than that but it’s probably more than zero. A lot of them people just really wanted a copout answer rather than accepting that our election system is awful even when it’s operating as intended.

I think the thing I wrote was absolutely clear that what Trump is doing is extremely dangerous but it's also not actually changing the outcome of the election, which is a victory people should take in a time where there's not that many.

Like we straight up faced a nightmare scenario for a democracy, the sitting president spent months saying there was going to be massive fraud and set up a plan where he would declare victory early and sue to stop votes from being counted. There wasn't voter intimidation all over, there wasn't attacks on polling places, he tried to declare victory early and stop the count, but it didn't work. We faced another nightmare scenario where the sitting president called the election that ousted him illegitimate and asked his supporters to gather in the capital, and there were fewer people there than there were celebrating his loss spontaneously. He has lawyers in front of judges he appointed asking them to throw out thousands of votes, and they're getting thrown out of court instead. His DOJ has been slavishly devoted to him, to a scandalous degree, and could've easily said something that would've added more legitimacy to his claims. Barr said there wasn't voter fraud today.

Like, we all know poo poo's bad, man. But we have to take the victories where we get them.

It isn't a non-zero number because there are plenty of Dems who believe that the ONLY reason Trump won is the nebulous "Russian Interference"

But that number isn't THAT big compared to like the millions of Republicans who with no evidence believe this election was "stolen" in some manner. At least the Russian interference actually happened

Does voter suppression count as stealing, or do we mean just things like falsifying the count?

Sadly, I would put voter suppression under the category of “working as intended”, as long as decisions about voting places and districts are in the hands of local elected officials.

We need to change how the voting system is intended to work.

YouGov had a poll after the 2016 election where 42% of Democrats said the election was rigged (22% of the total results). Although, in fairness, there were a lot of headliner stories about red states blocking people from voting, along with all the stuff about Hillary's emails, Russian hacking of the DNC's server, etc.

On the other hand, a few weeks before the 2016 election, 73% of Republicans (41% of voters) said the election might be stolen from Trump by fraud.
