It's still funny that he thinks just because the UK government ordered something they'll get what they ordered and it works.

Or doesn't think at all about the scale. Eh, that's baseline human.

The thing I wonder about Elliott Page is that his role in the umbrella academy is female. Must be a bit hurtful to have to continue to play a female character on screen, if coming out as trans is essentially saying you've been pretending to be the opposite gender your whole life and don't want to do so any more.

For what it's worth, I don't feel male. I'm not sure i'd feel any better female, but I do get a bit of euphoria seeing faceapp female pictures of myself. I don't think I'm up for the hassle of having to explain what gender neutral means, so I'll probably handle the issue by not talking to people wherever possible.

It's not quite the same but after I came out I became increasingly uncomfortable playing male characters in tabletop RPGs, not that I played many to begin with, but of the two I played one was always half planned to be Trans and another after I came out was so very obviously an egg and in her current game is one of my most gay characters.

I mean that article just linked about the shortcomings of the Oxford vaccine was still glowing about the Pfizer one, which is the one that has just been authorised and we're due to receive 400k doses of that in the next week.

I know it'll take a long time to get the whole country covered, but we're not just going to be sitting around with a thumb up our arses for the next year either.

speaking only for myself, my trust in the NHS took a huge whack this year i guess, so the refrain that "dont worry its the NHS handling it, they're completely independent from the british gov somehow" doesn't magically elide my concerns

maybe its different in england but in scotland my partner has been trying to get an important operation done and it took literally 7 months of "we'll get it moving soon" for the emergency service to start up

fwiw i think the general staff of the NHS are hard working and much more admirable than me, but the executives don't seem any better than PHE(pbuh) or SAGE or any of the other trusted UK scientific institutions that turned out to be total horseshit this year.

It's not the first time, he went off about how the Pentagon just wants to fight wars to profit bomb makers back in June. And then increased military spending. Not sure if he'd be more dangerous or more useful if he weren't just empty rhetoric.

For what it's worth there's precedent in Netflix shows, when one of the actors in Good Girls came out they had his character come out too so he wouldn't have to constsntly be misgendered in the role.

Star Trek Discovery is set to do the same thing.
Blu del Barrio is non-binary, and their character, Adira Tal, is set to be also, but in an interview they said they'd prefer to use they/them for their character once they were also doing so in their personal life, so at some point this season (or maybe between S3 and 4, not sure) it's likely we'll see different pronoun usage for Adira, as Blu is now publicly non-binary

I was more commenting on how on TV characters - normally women - can have a string of boyfriends, then the producers decide to "spice things up" and have them suddenly become gay. For Vanya In 100% agree it's in character. It's just a trope already.

Yea for sure, I couke agree with that. I amb usually cynical when women characters in particular are bi in shows from a meta and sometimes actual narrative perspective.

Like Vanya seemed to be one of the better bi characters I've seen in just a random for a while. But I think my bar is so low for bi representation, I'm sometimes just happy to see it, I'm so beta.

I just want a self hating bi woman in a movie purely so I can feel seen tbh, pls holywood/netflix put that on your gay agenda.

I've spent most of this year in pain from wisdom teeth and a cracked tooth on one side. Been waiting since mid February to hear back from the NHS emergency place, but the dentist I'm registered with cheerfully informed me they could do it the next day if I pay private because 'there's not much on at the moment.'

For every hard working front liner in the NHS, there's armies of workshy jobsworths who wouldn't lift a finger unless spire paid them to do it. The reason the emergency care places are overloaded is because those pricks won't take on the extra work during a loving health crisis.

gently caress dentists, and gently caress whatever special status they get to be exempt from the nhs supposedly being free at the point of service.

There's also highly possibly long term consequences of not having the vaccine, so that's on the balance too.

You could argue that since the character is host to a symbiote (which itself is host to a bunch of other characters, to a degree), they/them was always the most appropriate set of pronouns regardless of gender

i've really noticed over the last few years that the NHS basically triages everyone where the first response is always "no we wont give you anything, come back if it gets really bad". they're basically operating on "an ounce of prevention is too expensive, cant be arsed"
its what you'd expect after a decade of intentionally killing the service

really sorry to hear about your tooth, thats a similar issue to my gf except half the loving wisdom tooth had been missing for the year. she finally managed to call between 3 diff organisations and got one of them to treat her and they just chiselled it out of her mouth in 10 minutes, then it got hosed up because they did a poo poo job so there was further calling back and forth to get them to give her antibiotics

and yeah they tried to fob her off to private care too

e: she also had glue ear a while back and the NHS advice is "this cant be fixed, hopefully its gone in 6 months otherwise you'll go deaf. come back if you go deaf". i think technically a year later we're still waiting on an ENT appointment lol

we were visiting family in corfu, a tiny greek island that cant even take out its own trash, and we walked unannounced into a doctors office and the (highly qualified) ENT specialist gave her some medicine for 40 euro that fixed it within 2 days and gave us a free checkup. he was pretty pissed off that the NHS had been telling her to leave it since it can permanently damage your hearing

when we got back her own GP was really dismissive of greek doctors and told her the medicine that had worked wouldnt have worked

KartooshFace, you are not responding efficiently!

The whole teeth and eyes thing is weird, and prevalent. Here in NL I can add optional (commerical) dental insurance to my otherwise comprehensive government-mandated health cover, but it's something stupid like €200 in premiums a year, and the max they'll ever pay out is €300. I'd rather spend the money on a Waterpik!

My wife has the super-fancy top-up insurance (mainly to get extra physio visits paid for), and she gets €75 every two years towards a pair of glasses. This wouldn't really help if we couldn't afford the €650 lenses she needs for her crazy complicated eyes. Guess she would just have to suffer unsuitable glasses then!
