well I have a strange problem, my computer won't boot off my C: drive unless I also have a specific other drive plugged in? I had installed Fedora (mlday) on the other drive so it must have done something fucky with the UEFI. I can't be hosed to fix it but if anyone has any ideas pls shoot

the windows bootloader should still be there and bootable, which means either the linux damaged the bootloader or it hosed up your uefi (or both).

if you remove the linux drive and then stick a windows install stick in there you should be able to have it repair the bootloader. you may want to try factory resetting your UEFI as well.

I've had a ds416 sitting in the mechanical room humming away for over two years now and I've never had to think about it once, there's the mount on the network every time I need it and maybe once a month I get an email that its rebooting for an update. this is the most glowing review of this type of appliance I can possibly give

again it's 100% cool if people want to set up a dumb ubuntu box so they can practice their ls's and rm's, but one's truly important storage should be on the most reliable don't-think-about-it device one can possibly get. nicely done

I did use that to get the syntax, then I used VI to edit the crontab. That worked ok enough. After that I found Zeit and that did almost everything I wanted without much fuss.

this is a really dumb question but surprisingly nothing really shows up on google when i search it but what exactly are the benefits to using a synology instead of a windows desktop for a server?

the "server" in my house is just a windows 10 desktop with a ton of hard drives in the tower (i bought a case that holds like 12 HDs). it runs my plex, sonarr, radarr, and it also Gamestreams to all the Nvidia SHields that i have hooked up to every TV in the house

from what i can tell the pros of the synology are:

1) cheaper than a windows computer
2) uses like $14 a year less in electricity
3) doesn't need to reboot for updates as much

and cons:

1) can usually only hold 5 hard drives max
2) no streaming games

am i missing anything? i've always been curious about this.

other pros

you actually can hold more than 5 hdds, even if you buy a 5hdd model and max it there's an addon that lets you add more
arguably has better bit rot protection than windows storage spaces (unless you have ReFS running but that's no longer supported on win10 workstations i believe)
easier to janitor
smaller than a tower
better support for acting as a time machine backup location (this is important to a lot of goons, may not matter to you)

Chumbawumba4ever97

ah ok, thanks. most of my media is blu-ray rips and TV shows so, not exactly stuff i am ultra concerned with having duplicates of

i actually find my situation easy to janitor because i already know windows and all i do is remote into it once every few months to maybe reconfigure sonarr with a news indexer that stopped working or something

ReFS is still supported on Windows 10 Pro for Workstations but is no longer supported on Windows 10 Pro. But ReFS also sucks rear end, so if it’s an option, just don’t.

then I guess point to synology because ntfs has no bitrot protection at all afaik

Sure, if you need more than 114 TB of storage, an entry level synology may not be for you.

However, you also now officially have a data hoarding problem. Delete the bluray rips of Gilmore Girls and LOST.

i have decision paralysis on this topic. I have old computers lying around and old laptops. I want to have a video server and run adblocking dns etc but want it to be quiet / reasonably small.

I dont have much media really, current plan is to just run it all on one of the old laptops, maybe with an external hdd. tempted to pack some old drives and mobo etc into my big old pc case but then it takes up too much space maybe. idk. maybe it's worth just buying a nas? then again dont really want to spend a lot especially when i have so much poo poo lying around taht could "do the job"

no

i mean i love you jonny but a hard drive is the size of a small sandwich. it's not taking over my house and in actuality it's stuffed underneath my basement work bench; literally nothing would be in that space otherwise

shucked 8tb drives can be had for $120, so it's not even an expensive endeavor either.

i kinda like making my friends literally lol when they see my plex collection

Maybe something like an IFTTT rule where if it detects a new entry on your work Calendar it creates an equivalent one in your Personal Calendar but without any details in it other than "WORK TIME", and viceversa?

Edit: actually you might just be able to set your event to Private and that should hide its details from other calendars?

i have to have a car because otherwise i cant drive around the country solving mysteries while being doggedly pursued by federal marshals for a crime i did not commit (9/11)
holy gently caress i'm having an audio issue that's driving me up the wall.

i few months ago work gave me a pair of jabra evolve 75 headphones to wear and i brought them home but forgot the little usb dongle at work. no worries though, because they paired with my computer over bluetooth just fine.

fast forward to a few days ago and suddenly bluetooth stops working with them. they pair fine, and i can select them from the list of audio devices, but no sound comes out and the mic doesn't pick anything up. the headphones still pair fine with my phone and work great with the computer when attached via usb cable, but no dice over bluetooth to the laptop.

called up jabra support today and we agreed that it sounded like maybe something was hosed up with the bluetooth on the computer, and i was advised that really they work best with the proprietary usb dongle anyway, and using that would get around any hosed up bluetooth stuff on the computer. i truck my rear end into the office, get the dongle, bring it home and install it and it goes great. headset is detected, it's set as my default playback and recording device, the whole shebang. device manager even says it's working. guess what though? no audio in or out from or to it! not a drat thing!

still works great with my phone and when plugged in via usb to the computer, and the jabra desktop app says it's good to go, jabber even sees it, but it's not doing poo poo when connected wirelessly. windows support said that reinstalling the audio drivers for my machine should fix it, but guess what? it effing didn't.

god dammit i hate this poo poo it makes me so mad!!!
