I think the big question is what about carpentry you find rewarding. If it's finishing pieces, then you'll make use of every tool available to you. Same if you're most excited about planning the project out, and less so about the execution (I feel like these people are the ones who are most into using things like lasers and automated milling tools). Hand tools appeal to the people who are in it for the process and don't really mind if it takes them weeks or months to finish a project.

If you're into carving there is also (https://twitch.tv/timberanew) and https://twitch.tv/japaneseprintmaking in Twitch which are good fun and you can occasionally pepper them with questions while you watch them work. Twitch has a whole host of bowl turners as well. Twitch used to host Wood Working Materclass which was all hand tools fine furniture creation but I guess their agreement ended which is a shame because it was super sweet to be able to follow along and ask questions live. edit: And https://twitch.tv/samuelsculpture does some sweet relief carving. I think I spent a full year just putting together a kind of lovely medicine cabinet...

There may also be issues of space. A table saw or a bandsaw both take up a lot more space than a saw. A power planer or jointer or planer/jointer (with infeed/outfeed) both take up a lot more space than a couple of hand planes and a jointer plane. Etc.

They don’t hold her attention quite as well as 3x3 either. She’s also getting a workbench (I want my router table back) for her birthday. Her grandmother was a tinsmith for 40 years and is supplying her with real (but child size) tools. I grew up nailing boards together while my dad and grandfather worked on projects and those are some of my favorite childhood memories. I’m hoping she has the same fondness that I do. Right now she steals my tools and boards and tries to put them together with me.

Aluminum extrusions are actually pretty drat cheap. Totally wonderful material, and with normal woodworking tools you can build some extremely accurate and cool things. Highly recommend playing with them.

Our house (circa 1830s) came with an old ladder to get up to the attic; based on how perfect it fits the attic hatch I'm guessing it was custom made for the hatch (or the hatch was built to fit the ladder). Overall it's in good shape but there's some splintering along one side due to how it was stored. What's the best way to smooth it out and protect it from further damage without ruining the old patina? Or, should I sand the whole thing down?

I think your only realistic options are sand it down or somehow build it up, maybe by disassembling it and dunking the parts in epoxy, then sanding the epoxy down. After you sand it down, finish it with some kind of durable coating, like a polyurethane.
