They've been using contractors for many things long before Bezos had an idea to start an online bookstore.

All of the mail that my area office receives and disparches to the sorting and distribution center 120 miles away is shipped by a contractor. We have several routes that are handled by highway contract carriers. Those routes get enough mail that I think they should just be rural routes and the carriers be represented by the NRLCA.

I think vehicle maintenance is also supposed to be handled by contractors, but one of our two custodians just does a lot of that work himself if it's simple fixes.

Should be very soon. Ask HR when you should expect to get the offer letter.

I've had selections I've made take four or five months to route through Workforce Management. If you weren't selected, you won't be notified (at least in my agency) until the person who was selected has accepted, which can't happen until that selection goes through this process.

Got it, so either way (hired or not) I might not hear back for a few months.

Well in that case I’ll start thinking of this dream job like I do an AliExpress order: forget it exists until I’m either pleasantly surprised or slightly disappointed

Relax.
Yea I'm five years in and I generally like my job. The benefits are good and the strict 40-hour work week is amazing. The biggest negative is being tied down to the DC Metro area. I really like the area but I would also like to own a house one day. Between paying off student loans and saving for retirement I don't know how anyone saves enough cash to put 20% towards a house around here.

it seems like a lot of people bug out after a year. Probably helps if you have ready career options in the private sector.

I'm also at the five year mark and feelin' good. It feels weird to have been the new employee and now I've seen people come and go.

it's wild how many people there are who have been doing their job forever. Lots of people in my office and agency with 20+ years. those who are still around after a few years seem to be in for keeps

I’m 18 years in, and have had the same job since 2005. At some point the pension becomes a pretty good reason to stay in since you may find it hard to get comparable post-retirement income if you go private when you’re 40 years old.

I did the same, though admittedly rolling in with a higher down payment would have been a better deal if I’d had the money.

At my last position, they were pretty ruthless about cutting people just before their probationary period was up if the managers didn't think they could handle the job.

They don't even do that where I am. One of our least dependable claims specialists apparently got arrested at work for public intoxication.

The OS literally said "there's someone at the back door that wants to talk to you", and it was cops with a breathalyzer.

I have a huge pet peeve about just sending claimants to someone's voicemail instead of just trying to help that person. 9 times out of 10, it's solveable within 5 minutes of effort.

After several years of dealing with angry claimants that he promised undeliverable stuff to and then is somehow magically off that day, I had it.

Someone calls and asks to speak to ________? Let me put you right through to him.

Hello yes I heard there was a lovely trainwreck here and...

I recently heard of someone who was AWOL for a year in my site and was able to resume their employment afterwards. TBF, I do prefer erring on the side of being lax vs ruthless about nixing bad performers, since life especially now is kinda crazy and poo poo, but that's extreme even for me (outside I dunno, being kidnapped by aliens or one of those amnesiacs who finds themselves living a totally new life until they get their memory back or something).

I'm extremely tolerant of mediocre, manageable employees, and extremely intolerant of irredeemable ones. To my mind, if you know they'll never amount to poo poo and will forever be a net negative no matter what level of supervision, get rid of them sooner than later.

This belief is 100% opposed to the belief of our current district leadership, which is why I will never go out for OS until some people retire.

I have friends who work as GSs who are convinced that I have a solid shot at applying for some GS13 range positions as a retiring enlisted Marine with a undergrad degree and service connected disabilities.

I have other irons in the fire but I also have a PMP certification and have two decades of putting up with military bullshit and suspect my tolerance for stupid is probably higher than some others. I’ve been eyeballing some PM spots and am curious to hear from the thread whether it’s likely I can make the shift into something not military adjacent but still in government.

Honestly, PM is a really great fit for ex-military. The skillsets align well, and you already have the cert.

I just don't know what the career ladder looks like there. The two I've ever known worked their way up the engineering ladder on the civ side.

Prior military with service disabilities helps your application a lot. If you have a high tolerance for stupid people and bureaucratic bullshit, you can absolutely make the shift. If you have a better deal elsewhere, take it, but there is literally no downside to throwing in your application, especially since it'll be awhile before you hear back.
