I ordered a Quest 2 just now with the intent of opening it on Christmas Day and having fun with the kids, etc. Does anyone know whether it comes pre-charged in the box? I'd assume it doesn't, so I'll have to do some stealthy opening/charging/re-taping prior to then, but it'll be nice to know beforehand so I can plan accordingly.

Also, how long/involved is the initial setup, not including downloading games? If I have to charge it beforehand I might as well get it all logged in, etc., but if that only takes a minute than I'll probably just wait.

I think it came with some charge, but not a lot. The initial setup is 20 minutes: download the store in the smartphone, register, upgrade the firmeware, initial setup.

Mine came with like 70% charge. As long as you have the oculus app downloaded and installed and a Facebook account to login to, the updating/sync process took me 10 minutes maybe? Super quick. you can also buy the games on the oculus app, and as soon as it syncs begin downloading.

Thanks, both of you. I think I'll most likely get this dealt with prior to the morning, then, after the kids are in bed, so that we can open it and start having fun reasonably shortly. I do already have a Rift and Oculus/FB accounts, so it sounds like that part shouldn't be too bad.

Hello Commandos
VR bros, need your help.
So I have got my son a Quest 2 for Xmas, and he doesn't have (and never will have until he's much older) a facebook account.
What's the best way to handle this?
He has a phone so I can install the Oculus app on it but I'd really rather not do if possible.
I don't mine him using my Oculus account I guess, but that will be an issue for some multiplayer stuff.
I didn't think this through really

Absolute VR noob here, got a Quest 2 last week.

Contractors is pretty rad. I guess the closest comparison would be a Call of Duty, though not as frantic. 5v5, many different game modes. You can jump and slide which is cool. Tons of weapons that feel pretty good, though the recoil feels very random (maybe I'm wrong, I've played like 4 games).

This is more of a general VR thing than a Contractors thing, but I can't stand the default controls of "controllers facing front". I found my virtual body getting confused if I lowered my hands or looked around too much while moving. It feels way more natural to toggle to the "headset faces front" style and just keep the stick pushed in the direction I want to move.

Mark Zuckerberg here and it's never too early to set your child's future Facebook account up for them, especially on their phone and tablet. If you start now they just might have enough of an account presence to not get banned and brick the new Facebook Quest 2 (with real-time biometric analytics from Facebook) that they are getting for Christmas.

Pretty sure Payday 2 has a perk/buff or w/e that either gives you riot shield knockdown or armor penetration so you don't even have to put in that much actual effort.

Sniper rifles can also penetrate shields, although the scopes feel a little funny in VR. They do work though, and it can be drat satisfying in VR, but its also a little janky.

This may be nicer when you're new, but in the long run you'll probably end up switching back. Being able to walk in one direction while looking other directions is the whole joy of VR.

Having your view always tied to where you're looking is actually something I hate lol.

I haven't played Contractors yet though so I don't know how that implementation plays exactly.

Farscape is actually pretty cool.
Just bought a Quest 2 because I want to watch movies in a virtual theater and play Beat Saber VERY badly. I bought it from Best Buy with the expectation that I'd pick it up in store next Friday. Anyone have experience with Best Buy ship-to-store? I'm already preparing myself for a delay.

I'm planning on using BigScreen to watch movies off my Plex since it's free. It looks like Skybox works similarly but costs money and has more theater customization? Is that right? Anyone have a preference of one over the other?

Best Buy seems to have figured out their poo poo in the last few years, their store pick up options have been easy and on time for me the 4-5 times I've done it. Last time I just parked in the marked spot, texted I was there, popped my trunk for the dude to drop it right in, and was on the road again within 5 minutes. Didn't even have to roll my window down.

For most solutions you'll need a PC to stream from, note that Firefox is the browser of choice to stream content since it's DRM isnt as prohibitive as other browsers. Chrome and Edge display a black screen or errors when streaming DRMed video, depending on the service.

I use Virtual Desktop since its very fast and straightforward, but Bigscreen is free and allows for VR group watching with avatars, virtual popcorn etc. Skybox is more for watching local media files or locally hosted content streamed from DLNA compatible video servers like Plex. Native VR apps are available for Netflix, Prime and a few others. There's also the option to use the built in Oculus web browser or sideloaded Android apps, but compatibility is spotty due to DRM. Disney Plus works on the browser, but I've run into plenty that does not.

I have 2 Quests, you just have to co-ordinate drawing out the spaces.

Eleven Table Tennis is a favorite, if you align the directions properly you can even kinda spectate matches outside of VR.

Because it's cheaper and they can sell it for cheaper.

But also you can kinda put the lenses in between the three notches and get to the IPD you need and the system understands it (seems to use some kind of resistance-based measurement like those cheap digital calipers).

OLED is good but IPS has made huge improvements to contrast/refresh. And while it still doesn't have the response time of OLED, it also doesn't have OLED's "black smearing" which is still an unsolved problem and looks like poo poo in games with dark backgrounds ( i.e outer space).

I use head based movement in everything and I have no problem walking in one direction and looking in another, you just adjust the stick as you look around.

It's second nature now, and not every game has other options so it's worth getting good at it. It's kinda like learning to circle strafe in flatscreen FPS.

Yeah, first-person shooters have me so used to changing the direction of my movement inouts relative to my vision, that attaching it to the controller facing throws me off. Glance to the left, my thumb goes a similar angle to the right so that I still walk "straight." I appreciate that most games offer both, but head-based works best for me.

What's the general consensus on the best "enthusiast" PC-based setup? Did the Valve Index live up to all of the expectations? I had a Vive Pro around two years ago for work but I didn't get to do much gaming. Should I just pick up a used Pro or Is the "next gen" of VR setups worth the premium?

Thanks for everyone that made suggestions on how to fix the stutter. I tried removing overclock from both cpu and gpu. Windows antivirus(default one shipped with windows) was removed. I tried reinstalling oculus software and the virtual desktop streamer. Nothing worked. So I gave up and just did a fresh install of windows 10. Sucks having to backup half a terabyte of games but it seems to have fixed it. I'm assuming it was some windows patch causing spikes.

Huh, I guess its not really all that different. I think there's a few games that have snap-turn built in where that may not work, but most probably do full joystick these days.

I just hold forwards all the time and move my hand, but stick vs hand either way you're turning something, really similar in the end. But nice to have preference options always.
