I'm not looking forward to people bragging about not getting the vaccine because if everyone else gets it they're mostly safe. Our govt announced it's going to be free and I expect a lot of friendly reminders to get it and go back to work for the sake of number, while concerns about unknown long term effects are going to be politely dismissed. I'm on a waitlist to get the normal flu vaccine like every year but still not 100% sure I'll get the roni one when it's available if I can isolate for an extra 6 months.

All of the govenment-appointed vaccinations in my country are free, but I am actually relieved that I am not on the first line to get the vaccine since I can work from home until it is no longer needed. In no terms I am antivaccer, gently caress no. But I am a bit skeptic on taking something that was hurried and was fast-lined through the acceptance process by the government. Its not anything rational, I think its just... dangerous. And I actually work in academia so I understand how the process works and how clinical trials are done. ..And I know that because I hesitate, its going to be a hell of a thing to sell to the public.

On arrival to Australia, travelers are transferred directly to a hotel where you must stay for 14 days, being tested every few days. They also pay the bill for the hotel stay. I'm sure it sucks but that's the price of entry to a country that handled this poo poo correctly.

I have people close to me who were royally hosed by the "safe" swine flu one, so I am overtly protective. Probably my lifestyle choises are at this age more destructive than anything one vaccination can throw at me.

Never been able to donate blood because my blood pressure is always unheathily low. It's not worth risking just because you can't handle not going to a restaurant for a while. A life with POTS is depressing and exhausting.

I don't see borders returning to normal for years in Australia (and NZ, Taiwan etc). You will absolutely need to show proof of vaccination to enter for years to come. I remember reading something saying COVID might end up like tuberculosis - a disease only impoverished countries suffer, which is a barrier to travel for citizens of those countries, but which rich Westerners don't even notice or think about.

My 81 year old grandfather caught it at the same family gathering my mid-50s mom and stepdad did. Mom and stepdad were both out of commission for two weeks. Granddad's consistently tested positive in the same interval while showing no symptoms. I think the only reason I haven't heard any "goddidit" praise reports about it is that granddad's sister got the roni back in May, spent all summer on a vent, and is still hospitalized/will probably die in hospital. poo poo looks completely random. Unrelated story: I work medical dispatch and last week we unknowingly transported a covid pt from the hospital back to a nursing home. Pt was treated as covid negative the entire time, they were in the general population at the hospital, driver and tech had no PPE, etc. When our unit got to destination the nursing home said "yeah the covid wing's over there." Turns out pt had been covid positive since October. Doesn't matter if Google says the contagion window is only X days after symptom onset, that's not something you expose people to without telling them. I know for a fact that symptomatic positives slip through the system on the daily. Workers have to quarantine and rigs have to be restaffed after decontamination whenever folks aren't told to suit up beforehand and they wind up getting exposed. Frontline workers are not in high supply and I'm just talking about run-of-the-mill non-emergency interfacility transport. I can't even imagine what EMTs and hospital workers are going through.

Vaccine restrictions on travel were commonplace before the rona, westerners just didn’t notice them most of the time. What I’m interested in is seeing how many of the MAGAs and équivalents hold out after mass vaccine rollouts begin and it becomes increasingly clear that the virus wasn’t a dem hoax that disappeared on Jan 21 and that the vaccine isn’t the mark or the beast. As long as there’s significant unvacced populations roaming around we might need to show proof. Committed antivaxxers were a tiny bit loud minority before this. How many people are going to oppose the vaccine afterwards when it’s required for schools and travel and employment, and the vaccinated are returning to normalcy while chuddy holdouts continue to have outbreaks?
