Regardless of the veracity of that statement, no one goes to those places as a tourist for a reason.

I had to go to Zhengzhou once and it was terrible.

Nah, it's more like St. Louis, which actually is the cradle of American civilization and also these somethingawful.com forums.

Eternal glory to Comrade Xi and the "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era," as it is officially known, the all encompassing theory guiding China to become a global military and economic power under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party.

The end goal is the "Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," set for 2050, when Xi expects China will return to its rightful status after over a century of bowing to the demands of Western powers.

We are Grateful for Comrade Xi liberating the Hong Kong from fascism. China is supreme. Xi Jinping has just consolidated his power. He is now the Eastern Sun . According to all economists, China is rising and it is now the Asian century.

The Asian century is upon us. China has more people, a stronger, more unified country, and is proud of itself, and is willing to accelerate the collapse of the United States. All of China's resources are focused on making the country stronger, and they will easily beat the United States at the right time.

i fondly remember listening to some NPR program in 2012 with two Serious economists discussing china’s imminent economic collapse. for some reason it stuck with me that every subsequent year that collapse never occurred

Spend at least 2 weeks in Beijing.... a few days in Xi'an....and make a trip to one of the mountains, preferably Huang Shan (but only in off peak seasons, it is extremely crowded in good weather seasons. )

IMO Shanghai is overrated, I wouldn't spend too much time in SH, Hangzhou, Shuzhou. Guangzhou is mainly a foodie city. Try to ration your times between cities in different development stages, split your visit between 1st tier, smaller cities and small towns.

To take in the "Chineseness", it's better to have local friends take you around as much as possible, as oppose to do it backpacker style. So I recommend you make some Chinese friends over the internet before hand and ask them to take you around. Don't give them money, give them quality gifts and most of them will cover your travel costs in similar amount.

That's all I can think off right now.

walking around west lake with my buddy from 杭州 and avoiding crowds by walking up some small 'mountain' to a tea shop was one of my best vacation days in China. I'd never heard of west lake until I went to China and it blew my mind

It's not anywhere as pristine as these photos imply but it's just as good~ The government enforces that all structures near the lake have the same classical architecture, at least their exteriors do. The tourists show up midday and it sucks tho

I went to West Lake twice and I wasn't impressed. Maybe I just went in the wrong time. On the subject of Beijing, I had very found memory of Tiantan and 13 Tombs, circa 1985(?).

I know it's a meme but it's fine, Zhengzhous just normal and fine. It's not great or anything but there are a ton of shittier cities I've been in.

Dengfeng is technically a part of Zhengzhou, so, you know. Kaifeng is super close and Kaifeng rules, Luoyang isn't great but I'd visit once and that's right there. Wanxianshan is awesome climbing, and Guoliang village is there. I think people hate Zhengzhou more because either they visited before the subway lines were done or because the airport is technically in Xinzheng, they only saw that, and Xinzheng is laughably bad. I took a bunch of classes at Huaxin technical college out in Xinzheng and it was like someone wanted to build a city, but had only ever seen pictures of a city and just recreated that.

Also Zhengzhou has a big dick/corn in the middle of the city and that's neat.
