So I think I am probably one of like five people from govt service to have given a poo poo about Morocco, Western Sahara, and the SADR / Polisario Front.

What possible reason beyond just salting the Earth for the Biden State Dept was this done

It’s hilarious then Trump somehow managed to out do Clinton and Carter in this area (and yes I get it’s Iran doing the heavy lifting for him and I don’t mean to imply King Stupid and Jarred have done stuff on their end), since it’s not like those deals were with democratic governments (Jordan not being as bad). Honestly I’m fine with it as it further boxes Iran in, stabilizes the American allied/friendly states and moves American product too. That’s to say nothing of bilateral relations between Israel and the other countries in general. Like I’m legitimately happy about this.

And before anyone mentions the Palestinians, this isn’t any different then how most Arab states have viewed them in the past two or so decades...they’re just saying the quiet part loud. It’s unfortunate, but such is global politics. That said it may lead to some sort of long term deal...and look Bibi is eventually going to be gone.

All of these Arab countries making “peace” with Israel is less a diplomatic breakthrough led by the US and more of the Gulf states and Morocco formalizing a relationship that began in the late 2000s and has only deepened through the 2010s. A lot of the GCC countries have directly benefitted from Israeli military/tech/intel back room deals, and it’s pretty much an open secret. Netanyahu continues to mold himself in the image of a Middle Eastern autocrat anyhow, so it makes sense that the Gulfie ruling families would eventually see him as a member of the club.

Most Arab countries continue to pay lip service to the Palestinian cause but none of them have really given a real poo poo about Palestine since the 80s at least.

It’s honest. Also I can guarantee that most...even informed Americans who knew about Western Sahara would view it as a fair trade off.

The whole my foreign views are more to the right, my domestic views are not.

Look I know no likes Israel here, I get it. I don’t particular love it myself, but I view it as a better trade off then anything related to the Western Sahara.

"Israel would never have known that the US supported them if the US didn't support Morocco's violation of cease-fire agreements and referendum agreements and generally disagree with the UN and international courts about the whole situation...

Maybe one day we'll find a way to show Israel that the US supports them, but so far our efforts have been inadequate," says the wise man.

The Moroccan military violently dispersed non-violent protests, was warned this would lead to open hostilities, apparently thought this a bluff, and then started taking significant casualties when the Polisario started up attacks again. It seems doubtful that Morocco would lose significant land holdings, but hit and runs and shelling can still exact some costs in response to Morocco violently repressing nonviolent protests.

Extremely cliff-notesy, so someone correct me if I gently caress this up:

-France and Spain had colonial holdings in Africa, including Morocco and portions of Western Sahara.
-In the 1970s, The Polisario (a leftist organization) and the Western Saharan peoples (Sahrawi) tried to establish independence. The US and other westerners opposed this, because Cold War and any leftist is obviously evil.
-Mauritania gave up its Western Saharan holdings to the Polisario, and then Morocco immediately seized the territory with US and French support.
-By 1991, a cease-fire was established with aid of the UN with understanding that there would be an independence referendum. Morocco has never permitted a referendum to take place. Virtually no countries recognize Morocco's rule over Western Sahara, but France and the US are kind of a big deal.
-Recently, (October), there have been nonviolent Western Saharan protests. Morocco has responded violently.
-The US and France have repeatedly threatened to veto any UNSC action on this topic
-Morocco has been friendly to US/French counter-terror and counter-insurgent actions in Africa
-the Polisario resumed attacks on Moroccan military forces in November-ish of this year as a result of the october crackdowns and general 29 years of zero progress on a referndum
-Algeria has typically supported the Polisario, but their economy is rough as hell right now, so it's not a good time for them to be involved
-The US and France endorse a Moroccan plan for West Saharan "autonomy," which is... uh... not very autonomous.

Also to add that:
1. Morroco has a sand berm that they erected to keep the Polisario Front and SADR (who have been in Algerian refugee camps) on the mostly sand side whereas Morocco administers the side with the larger town that starts with an L and where phosphate mine / conveyor belt is. The sand berm may also go a bit into Mauritania.
2. Algeria has supported the SADR and Polisario since the 90s.
3. If you ask why something hasn't been done militarily it is that Algeria is stronger than Morocco who is stronger than the Polisario so anything more than security forces would have had regional implications
