quote:In 1941, the fictional elephant Dumbo from the Disney movie of the same name was selected to be "Mammal of the Year", and a cover was created showing Dumbo in a formal portrait style. However, the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7 pre-empted the cover. The U.S. president Franklin Delano Roosevelt was named Man of the Year for a record third time, although Dumbo's Mammal of the Year profile still appeared on the inside pages of the magazine.

Of course I'm absolutely livid that anyone is talking stimulus without direct payments. I mean when Josh Hawley and Bernie Sanders can agree on something (well some things), then everyone needs to step back and reexamine what they've considered to not be needed. Also Hawley is a piece of poo poo, so I'm not praising him, just saying if two dramatic gaps on the spectrum can agree, people should consider that maybe it's an important thing to include. Okay quick question, when did trigger discipline become a thing taught in the military? Because troop pictures like that from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, etc are really common. I mean I figured something was always taught, but it seemed like people just didn't give a poo poo, until recently in terms of finger out of the trigger guard and above. It was more just don't pull until ready (although I've been told that's a leftover possibly from really really heavy rear end revolver triggers back in the day)

Couple with the fact that victims of rape, revenge porn and child porn will literally be revictimized every time a video they are in is reuploaded and PornHub literally does not care if you ask to take them down unless aggressively pursued by a lawyer. Or in the case of a young rape victim, she created a fake law firm letterhead and that got PornHub to take the video down. Twitter rumors are that the DC news bureau has already been told that the SCOTUS will deny Texas leave to file its bill of complaint today rather than waiting until Monday. Note that this is from right wing twitter trying to figure out how this could have happened and wishing it were otherwise.

I mean I don't disagree with you in terms of impact, just that I thought the House certifying was last. On December 14th, the Electors vote. On January 6th, Congress meets and accepts the results. Where that gets funky is that per the Electoral Count Act, there can be objections if both a House Rep and a Senator agree. That kicks off a two-hour debate, which the objection gets sustained (tossing the state's Electoral votes or a specific vote) if both the House and the Senate BOTH agree in a majority. It's likely not as simple as that anyways, as there are very limited grounds to challenge votes. Good explainer here (because reading the statute/CRS analysis is annoying): https://www.cbsnews.com/news/electoral-college-presidential-election-results-trump-challenge/

Yeah, he was an American citizen. But any capture operation to get him would've been fraught with danger for any SOF who went for him, and he likely would've killed himself before allowing himself to be captured anyway. Even if ee did capture him, any trial would've just been his opportunity to become a symbol and a martyr for potential jihadis to look up to, and the trial would be giving him a megaphone. was actively waging war against the U.S. with a foreign terrorist group. If AQ was a country, Awlaki would've been guilty of treason. Traitors can get hosed. We have no problem killing American or European citizens who join ISIS. Why are we still giving a poo poo about Awlaki? I have huge issues with the entire drone program, especially "signature strikes" where they don't even know who exactly they're targeting, but Awlaki was a known traitorous piece of poo poo.

Traitors deserve prosecution, not drone strikes. The amount of innocents killed in drone strikes make the one or two guys we get in the same hit not worth it. If we are unwilling to live up the ideals of justice by murdering innocent people, then why even pretend being a "traitor" matters?

I think that's pretty much the definition of collateral damage. Sometimes it's unavoidable. I mean think of how it's changed from even twenty five years ago, you don't have a plan dropping a 2,000 lb pomp or using a tomahawk, it's a hellfire, and now it's becoming an option to just use knives.
