Bobstar posted:But I also find that weird about the way some people use Facebook. Before I ditched it, it only contained people I knew in real life (plus one guy from here, and two people who share my name because we added each other in the early days of Facebook). People who I knew, but posted horrible right-wing takes got defriended or unfollowed. So I don't think I had the full political Facebook experience. Ads are now only a very small part of how facebook manipulates it's users. And it does manipulate them, as this volcano-lair level experiment in evil revealled. At the moment mine shows me a LOT of resin tables, which i actually like watching, especially the final stage where they buff the yellow stuff over it and it goes shiny. It's very satisfying, but I'm pretty sure they're up to something and the resin is hypnotising me to be racist and buy things. E: nice

I’d still think that some were better than others though. Is that contentious? I don't think you're asking that trollishly, I have asked it trollishly in the past, and there's no good answer. The immediate impulse is something like Guam, Guam hasn't caused much harm, but that is so clearly a consequence of limited ability to impose harm outside its borders that it's actually only harmless in the pathetic sense of the word, there's no meaningful model for Good there. So then you think somewhere like Bolivia, resisting capitalist imperialism and maintaining the soc dem line to benefit its poor, sounds good but it's also ethnonationalist nativism and state capitalism with no regard to negative externalities outside its own borders, so if we're saying Bolivia is good we logically have to greenlight literally every rich country with a welfare state. So if we're talking welfare then we need to think 'oh lifting people out of poverty is good', so now we're absolutely on the pro-China train which feels wierd but why does it feel wierd and wrong to say China is good? It can only be explained by principles and liberalism, which surely do mean something just ask the people suffering without them, but now you're just hosed, there are no logical answers possible anymore because it's an impossibly complicated calculation. Continuity NIP posted:We should be ruthlessly critical of our own countries because we can, in theory, change them While it's nice to have a fellow traveller on the pragmatic nationalism train, take a seat anywhere there's literally only two of us, the ruthless criticism really does need to be kept internal/amongst friends. Ruthless sharp-minded objective criticism of your own country that's coherently relative to other countries is legit impossible to do, you aren't that smart, so you'll usually just end up being that boring oval office slagging off the UK, looking like a mean-spirited twat and getting owned by one of the many, many examples of how the UK is actually pretty great compared to most of the world.

Just a moan more than anything, but this sort of thing is what is driving me off twitter. I had it nicely curated to people, things and info I wanted to read about and interact with. Now it's clogged up with tweets from accounts that I don't follow but people I follow do, tweets that other people that I follow have liked, from accounts that twitter thinks I would like, and in an order that it thinks is the most important. Sometimes the tweet at the top of my timeline can be several days old. Plus because it's now algorithm driven, it assumes that if you don't interact with a tweet in some way you never want to see it again. Scroll past it but think you might want to look at it later? Gone. Mis-use the back button on the browser? Gone. Not to mention how everything's de-generated into massive threads with sub-threads and comments stacked within them. And every time you fire up twitter you have one or two 'notifications' (which used to be your dopamine hit that someone was talking to/about you....) which are just twitter telling you that someone, somewhere has tweeted something. I’m not sure Nolan is right about that. Residuals are not paid on theatrical revenues, only from TV, DVD, SVOD etc. New rates for these new methods of exploitation have been agreed already. It may the case that residuals on a straight to VOD production are lower than on a theatrically-led film (I’m not sure) but there are definitely still residuals and pension, health and welfare payments payable on them. Correction: for the budget levels we are talking about residuals for New Media productions are the same as theatrical (at least for SAG). I don';t know about IATSE but I'd imagine they also get residuals on New Media productions. therattle fucked around with this message at 09:12 on Dec 13, 2020 |
