Oldstench posted:Does your software cure cancer and only run on Win 7? If not, you can give no good reason as to why this is still a thing. It's probably part of some Russian botnet as we speak. My spare PC that a friend uses to game on when he comes over still runs Win 7. I've tried putting 10 on it twice, both as an upgrade and as a fresh install, and both times I end up with a system that hard locks after random time both in-game and at the desktop. 7 runs fine, but Win10 just hates something in the hardware.

IT is pure overhead that doesn't contribute to the company's ability to generate income in any way shape or form, and what do you mean the entire email server is down thereby torpedoing our productivity, get it fixed yesterday and no you can't upgrade the architecture, you can't expect a budget if you don't contribute to the bottom line.

Mcdonalds UK's till system and internal network ran on Windows XP until 2018. It now runs on Windows 7. There are a lot of retail systems that still run on OS/2 because it would be massively expensive to move all their records to Windows, hence why some companies make OS/2 compatible operating systems specifically for retail. Windows has always had a shitload of backwards compatibility rules for a reason. Any time ITSC wants to do updates to the till system it means every store has to close for several hours, an actual full bore OS upgrade would likely mean losing an entire day at least and good luck justifying that to the bosses if nothing catastrophic has happened to the system recently. njsykora fucked around with this message at 03:50 on Dec 13, 2020 |

They're not just "OS/2 compatible", they're literally OS/2 licensed from IBM, rebadged and with updates for modern poo poo. Also it's not really about the money, it's more that there's no reason to downgrade to Windows.

That's why I had never tried the Epic launcher before, because I genuinely thought that "official integration" meant that GOG would replace the Epic launcher and I have no desire to have even more annoying gateways than I already do. GOG Galaxy works well as an aggregator of your game library across platforms, that's why it has integrations for stuff you technically can't play on PC like PSN and Xbox.

They then connected back to the network.

I was being catty simply because I am a Canadian citizen who lives in the US and, consistently, packages arrive here from the UK/France/Germany/Italy etc than Canada. Granted, I live nowhere close to the border, but I live even farther from Europe.

You probably shouldn't, since a lot of the new stuff is great, but some people are stubborn and can't adapt to change, so here we are.

Like when our company decided to switch everyone to Office 365 web app only because it was cheaper than giving us the outlook programs.

Shrimp or Shrimps posted:What on earth... don't they hire a person to make sure poo poo like this doesn't happen? My uncle worked on a very expensive government project for IBM, only to be told a year into the project that what they were developing needed to be compatible with Windows 3.1, not whatever the latest Windows was at the time. This was back in about 2012. After telling their contact that they'd basically have to start from scratch, they said whatever and doubled the budget of the project. Oversight only matters when you're starting up and have to care about how much things cost. When the money is flowing and it seems there's no end in sight, it's easy to just say gently caress it, even when it's concerning millions of dollars. It's not a good long term strategy as it lands most companies in positions where they rack up insurmountable debt that not even their insane cash flow can deal with. But modern corporate strategy doesn't care about anything past the next quarter. FanaticalMilk fucked around with this message at 22:02 on Dec 13, 2020 |
