The *idea* is that is doesn't immediately moot Donnie's dumb lawsuits because of an old Hawaii case from 1960. Nixon won the initial vote by 141 votes, then the court-ordered recount started, then it was time to tally up the electoral votes. Congress got three certificates - one signed by the Acting Governor in November saying Nixon won, one signed by Hawaii Democrats (doesn't count), then another signed by the new Governor on January 4th saying Kennedy won. Kennedy ended up winning the recount on December 28th.

So Congress got two certificates of electors with the proper Governor signature. The election turned out to not be close, so Nixon tossed the certificate saying he won and Hawaii's vote went to Nixon Kennedy.

Donnie's people, being stupid, are trying to force non-signed certificates to Congress to make them count, because they're stupid.

Did I mention these people are stupid? They're arguably feloniously stupid:

I run InfoSec, particularly AppSec for a major tech firm. AMA about how today is going. (No we don't have SolarWinds and it loving owns.)

This was essentially a Zero-day type attack, while it wasn't due to any inherent insecurity in the Solarwinds/Orion application, it might as well fuckin been. To the average company, there was no way to mitigate this from happening, unless you were running an internal blue/red team on all of the applications you used and had some pretty gnarly contractual provisions to do the same on your vendors.

There's a reason why the attackers explicitly avoided the IP ranges of certain companies when deploying this sort of attack.

To the point of the Russians/Chinese being the "best" that's simply not true. They're the fastest to blow their exploits for sure, and they are able to quickly and thoroughly exploit open networks, but the rating of "best" goes to either the US or Israelis due to the fact that they're able to exploit, compromise, and operating within systems for years without blowing their load like this. The Russian model, and the derivative Chinese methodology is to breach hard and fast to shame or cause an adverse reaction on the target, most other nation-state actors (and honestly, there are really maybe 5 at that level) are more low and slow about it.

I find this fascinating and would subscribe to your newsletter. Any suggestions on where to go to learn more about this in depth? I saw something earlier, probably in a tweet, that they avoided Microsoft IPs like the plague.

Mostly performative, but reflective of the same thing happening in other states, which appears to be an attempt to keep ongoing election lawsuits from being tossed on the grounds of "doesn't matter anymore."

Also I feel the guy who came up with a lot of password recommendations said using three unique words (or some variation) and not requiring people to constantly change them (which for a long time was a reason for some truly truly lovely passwords).

Pretty sure that was an XKCD comic.

Hard to know. I don't know enough about DAG Rosen, but Donnie's likely going to try to get him to yell about voter fraud in the leadup to the official Congressional vote on January 6th.

Good loving luck with that, as DAG Rosen will be out of a job on January 20th anyways, Washington practically goes quiet from Christmas to New Year's, and there ain't poo poo an Attorney General can only do in under two weeks before poo poo becomes inevitable on January 6th.

It's not like Barr wasn't already doing everything Donnie wanted already.

YEP.

To detail: you want to ensure that your key folks are insulated against not only monetary shock, but the ability for any malicious actor to come in and "take care" of any issues they have. Not leaning on HR or insurance to provide a few bucks or monetary relief for a major medical issue is really fuckin' dumb.

Apparently the Marines have already been made aware, as well as the toys for tots org, I wonder what'll happen with this.

They'll probably stay clear. Toy for Tots are good folks but I've seen groups punted for .. odd reasons.

Our 4x4 club got really big with TFT donations which ended up causing drama with the local Harley Davidson group who felt like we were stealing their thunder for some weird reason.

After that incident, we wound up going with a different charity that adopted families with deployed servicemembers who were gone over Christmas.

That's my Toys for Tots story :(.
