/\/\/\ edit: holy poo poo that thread I mean if I get to the point of being financially able to upgrade my car (11 year old prius) to an all electric in a few years, I'm all about an electric car but I wouldn't touch a loving tesla with a 10 foot pole.

Haha, I clicked on the snopes link the person posted at the end of their thread.quote:7. Oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single ‘general car default’ warning light. If only whoever wrote that chain letter knew.

I mean, my work has its own charging stations (That, in an OSHA-related note, appear to have had half their charge ports ripped off by dress-shirts forgetting their EV was plugged in) so I could totally visit my grandparents' places on the company dime. Tesla would give me the range and comfort, if nothing else. Now if only I could convince an enemy to get in the back seat...

EV charger vandalism by dipshits or methheads is much more likely.

I've driven a Tesla. It drove well and was super fast on acceleration. It had interesting controls and aspects of the car were customizable that aren't typically so in normal cars. That being said I'll probably never own one because they're too expensive and are a new technology. Never a good combo

Back when Tesla rolled their own, the standard didn’t exist. Tesla has made a lot of poor moves, but that ain’t one of them.

Jet Jaguar posted:This sounds like a hard-won lesson. In high school I worked at a retirement home in the dining room. It was a pretty chill job and was fun to hang out with all the old people. I remember one of the ladies there telling me she, like many other young women her age, worked in a munitions factory in WWII. She was working a section of the line where they would weigh the shells and measure them with a sliding jig thing to check if overall length was in spec. They were near the end of the day, and one of the other girls was rushing to finish because she had some social event after work. They suspect she slammed the shell into the caliper with a little too much vigor, which pierced the primer and blew off several fingers on one of her hands. From that point on onward they all became much more cautious in their work.

I'd put the proprietary Supercharger plug in the same category as Apple's Lightning in that when it first shipped it could do things no standard offering could do, though the standards have since caught up, as opposed to a Sony Memory Stick type situation where they invented their own proprietary thing just because gently caress you. e: f;b

wolrah posted:In 2012 when the Model S was released and the first Supercharger stations were deployed CHAdeMO was limited to 62.5kW DC charging and CCS only existed in prototype form. There was not an existing standard that fit their needs at the time. To expand on this, Teslas are all fully J1772 compatible, they just use a different physical plug. A simple (cheap) adaptor and you can use J1772 equipment. The problem is that Teslas are NOT CHAdeMO compatible, because that standard was developed largely after Tesla settled on their own DC charging standards. Because of this, the CHAdeMO adaptor needs a significant amount of electronics and software to translate between the car and the charge station. It also at some point in the past went from $450 to $605(!?!) new from Tesla.
