Yeah, tumblr gets a lot of poo poo, but livejournal was all of the drama with even less scrutiny which meant it was a haven rife with abuse, exploitation, and grift.

The bombast of modern social media kinda backgrounds it now, but prior to the late aughts, most social spaces on the internet were home to some genuinely heinous poo poo.

That's the thing - Tumblr was loud but was missing two final steps to make it just as bad:

1) The average person had no idea it existed, nor did most celebrities and corporations, and those that did were chased off for their "how do you do, fellow children" vibe
2) Your feed was still your feed - the ads had started to show up, but around peak tumblr you weren't going to see JoeAmerican85930's post showing up in your feed, only in your reblog notifications. Unless you specifically responded to their reblog with comments, or their comments, followers would never notice, and the blog/reblog style made following anything a mess.

Now, the relative isolation of Tumblr plus the really young userbase made it ripe for misinformation, often well-crafted. I used to run a tumblr blog for debunking and while a whole lot of it was the same stuff from facebook/lj/myspace there was some stuff that clearly had effort; one that stuck out was a listicle of "5 time the medical community abused PoC" and the first four were true historical cases and then they tucked in Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation antivax myths for number 5. My debunking channel had apparently managed to catch at least a few Russian disinfo posts, because I got the email from Tumblr after that whole blowup that I had reblogged targeted disinfo.

That being said, I expect high schoolers to be fooled by poo poo like that, not members of congress.

But yeah, there was mostly a lot of good intentions, and people too young to realize the "cool idea" is the easy part, and actually implementing it (or making it fun) was the hard part; I don't even know if all cases were "scams" as much as "insane optimism". A few times where a few drawings and a paragraph of text became a videogame concept and people just seemed to expect that would make it work. And a whole lot of people trying to punch up by doing everything they could to invent hot takes by calling every inept kickstarter a scam by evil villains because that got the reblogs.

I left when it became obvious the right wing troll bots were starting to take root, search for tags and start poo poo everywhere and when my ads became literally sketchy online casino ads. Good thing there weren't any nipples, however.

That was all born on ljdrama, which very much had the kiwifarms thing going on where most of the posters mocking the obsessed stalkers on lj were themselves obsessively stalking said people. I had to deal with an ljdrama slapfight that spilled over into borderline threats of violence at an event I was staffing.

format wise it was also way easier to counter disinformation on tumblr - you'd get a post talking about how secretly bill gates is injecting microchips into tiny African babies and then immediately after, in the same post, could be the receipts

the original post could still make its way around but usually the most popular version of the post would be the one with correct info.

It used to be before every new entry in the thread had to get peer reviewed to make sure the content creator wasn't an awful person because otherwise we'd get derails lasting for pages explaining exactly why X person is awful. Instead we get page long derails of debate about whether x person is awful or passes the purity test.

^I don't like his adaptation as a whole, but they nailed the casting for Rorschach.

A lot of people got tired of watching a new person and then hearing them go on a really lovely rant. The era of Trump made this way worse. It's especially true since the thread tends to deal with people doing analysis of stuff, if not outright political talk, so politics are going to eventually come up. It's not that weird for people to ask if anyone already knows the person .

The whole art and artist separation doesn't come up much because we don't tend to focus too much on apolitical funny channels. Although sometimes the thread does. I'm still looking for a good chill streamer to fill dead air with after Cryaotic's whole disgrace.

Getting around to watching Shaun's massive video on the Hiroshima & Nagasaki bombings and it is very good. I don't think I've ever seen a chronicle of the events so detailed and more important, even-handed. He does an incredible job unraveling the Kafkaesque nightmare of ego and bureaucracy that make the bombings feel at once completely pointless but also utterly inevitable.

This bit in particular grabbed me,

You should check out Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast, especially the Supernova In The East series, if you like Shaun's vid. Goes over the entire Pacific theatre from the events that lead to Japan getting involved in WW2 all the way to the end of it. He explains things very clearly, cites numerous primary sources from both American and Japanese origins and gives you a very indepth look of just what Japanese leadership have been thinking during those years.

Yeah, I listen to Calin. He is a superb historical storyteller, but as Terrible Opinions points out his historical perspective is very much is that of a revisionist liberal. Which isn't awful, he accepts and understands the crimes and costs of empire but even at his best, he has blind spots.

Like in the Supernova In The East there is still an undercurrent of implicit jingoism. He has a morbid fascination with the awe of war and often wants to root for the USA, even when he knows he shouldn't because so much that was ground into him at a young age that it's hard to filter it all out.

That's the one part of the video that sticks out, because it's a correct point phrased in a wrong way. It treats is as a kind of

Totalitarianism: +100% against morale bombing

when

1. It'd be more accurate to say that while we have dozens of historical examples of failed morale bombing campaigns, we have no examples of successful ones.

2. It creates a false dichotomy of a "totalitarian" east that "isn't like us" when the government of Imperial Japan was based on the archetypal western constitutional monarchy of Prussia.

geoff talks about sakuga, those parts of an anime episode that they really pour all the animation budget into, whether it's a fight scene, pivotal dramatic moment, or just a really nice shot of some people cooking or dancing.

I'm not really sure why he chose that thumbnail for the video though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSkrywom0J8&hd=1

I appreciate that he marks each sakuga clip he uses with the animator who made it.

my favorite sakuga animator is yoh yoshinori, his stuff is incredible. he's been in the industry since the founding of gainax iirc, and his stuff is all over the place, from evangelion to pokemon and especially Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. geoff could have done an hour long video just focusing on yoh's stuff and barely scratched the surface. his animation style is so kinetic, moreso than most animators, you can really just FEEL every impact and weight to it all. There's this scene in Gurren Lagann that is an insanely animated attack sequence, there is so much going on in every single frame of this part, the impacts, the energy, the speed, the perspective, it's nuts. this was a tv anime, but yoh always puts his all into his stuff.

https://i.imgur.com/BtcABV2.mp4

he used to have a deviantart account but I don't know if it still exists, guy is a huge fan of western animation like powerpuff girls, spongebob, etc and would regularly post doodles, short animations, fanart he drew, and keyframes of shows he worked on, it was great stuff.

there's a few compilation AMVs of his sakuga from various shows/movies/animations on youtube, he really took part in a ton of different shows over the years:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH7-LxjT5V4&hd=1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFRDSbjnasY&hd=1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoyhpNM4zt4&hd=1

I believe he was also a driving force in the creation of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, which makes sense based on its style, and that show is loving incredible.

man do I love me some amazing animation and rooting around in it frame by frame sometimes. :allears:
