Thanks for digging that up, but it still sounds like something done in a moment of frustration that doesn't reflect his usual character. It also sounds like there was a lot going on behind the scenes involving people he knew personally, that he didn't feel it was appropriate to share with the whole internet. Of course, the smart thing to do would have been to just not say anything rather than hint at stuff he couldn't share, but frustration makes you do stupid things and it looks like he regretted it immedately after.

I thought Shaun was also talking about Germany at that point.

Germany is the example he illustrates, but the point of the quote is to help explain why US bombing of civilian targets in Japan was strategically ineffective/unnecessary despite the massive death toll. And by making it about "totalitarianism", he then undermines his point by bringing up the Blitz as another example of a failed morale bombing campaign.

My point is that
1. Shutting down fifth column groups while your cities are being bombed isn't some uniquely "totalitarian" thing, or even something supposedly "totalitarian" governments are better at
2. As Shaun mentioned, a bigger issue is that the evidence seemed to suggest that while morale bombing may have made civilians unhappy, for the majority of them it didn't make them less willing to fight

Basically it might be a snappy quote, but it
1. Wades into the thorny question of "what is totalitarianism anyway?"
2. States that whatever it is, it gives some kind of Civilization-style resistance to morale bombing
3. Implies that there exist some "non-totalitarian" states that could be defeated through morale bombing
4. Leans on the myth that the actions of the German and Japanese governments were the actions of a few bad actors and not supported by their citizens

It's a shame, because the video is almost entirely perfect apart from that one quote.

demonstrably false, in addition to the protective measures the British undertook to protect civilians, the blitz mainly failed because the Germans were taking unsustainable losses to both aircraft and pilots. The terror bombing campaign was also less effective then what the Luftwaffe had been doing previously (Attacking the RAF directly) and the Luftwaffe also failed to adequately target Britian's war industry—so even as civilian losses mounted, the Luftwaffe was growing weaker while the RAF was growing stronger until the campaign was called off entirely to prepare for Barbarossa.

Bahi JD is probably my favorite currently famous sakuga guy, partly because his story is so wild (he's from Austria and managed to be so good and passionate that he was able to force his way into an incredibly competitive and insular industry) and partly because his animation has such a fantastic sense of natural flow to it.

The thread was talking about the bad FLCL sequels a bit back, but they did have some good animation buried in there courtesy of some really good animators including Bahi:

It's not that weird for people to ask if anyone already knows the person .

The whole art and artist separation doesn't come up much because we don't tend to focus too much on apolitical funny channels. Although sometimes the thread does. I'm still looking for a good chill streamer to fill dead air with after Cryaotic's whole disgrace.

It was cool as hell seeing him go from 'Oh god, when do I actually play the loving game' years ago with Yakuza 0 to then giving it another shot and going 'This game's amazing! As far as I can recall Darkness has never tried to harass anybody like Mineta. i mean its more moral bombing doesnt work period. it didnt work when germany and japan bombed cities and it didnt work when we bombed them. it causes a rally around the flag type deal more than anything. to make a shakey comparison. 9/11 attacks just made americans rally around the flag and demand blood for the most part for the most part. varying degrees sure and obviously some didnt or changed politics etc. but terror bombing doesnt work ,really. with japan surrendering, i always viewed it as a mix of factors and events.

Well personally I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt because I've been watching Folding Ideas practically since it started and there's no hint of a chuddy attitude in there. The opposite, in fact. He's spoken out against gamergate and 8chan and taken a lot of online abuse because of it, including having them spread rumors that he was a pedophile because he exposed their sharing of child porn. So when someone with an otherwise excellent track record makes a couple of ill-advised posts, I'm inclined to believe it was just a lapse in judgement and not a sign that he was a secret rear end in a top hat this whole time.
