It looks like there's a law progressing and it'll be sometime next year, I'm not sure what the actual schedule is.

The UN has just downgraded cannabis on the Single Convention too, which means that members aren't prohibited by international law from legalizing (not that that stopped Canada and Uruguay, but it's official now).

I get that this is not real advice, but is there any logic to "the taller the building, the safer you are"? For either Brexit or nuclear war I suppose

It's not very subtly suggesting that the government don't want to spend time and resources looking after civilians after a nuclear war and would much rather you all died in a collapsed building.

This isn't that far from the truth of actual civil defence planning from at least the 60s until the late 70s and early 80s. While it's not actually written down anywhere at all, there's a very large disparity between the projected casualties and the projected amount of food and supplies that the RSGs would have to coordinate the delivery of - the very obvious conclusion being that there would be no attempt at all to treat casualties at all. I mean in a lot of ways that's probably the only possible way of planning - with basically all food and fresh water contaminated to a greater or lesser extent, attempting even the most basic first aid on the >50% of the population likely to be suffering from some kind of injury is just going to burn out whatever resources you have *and* only prolong suffering.

The most insane thing about British nuclear planning is that we even had any. That any sane person can look at the results of the Transition To War exercises - even the ones where we put our thumbs massively on the scale - and think "Yes, this is an acceptable outcome" and then base policy on it is psychotic on a scale even Brexiteers couldn't handle.

This is a minor story, but it's a blatant political appointment, and anyone Michael Gove is a fan of should be booted into the North Sea, not given a job like this:

quote:

Dame Rachel de Souza will become the next children’s commissioner for England from next year after MPs narrowly approved her appointment.
Gavin Williamson has confirmed the academy trust boss will take up the role next year after the Parliamentary education committee found she was “appointable”.

However, the committee said this was “not a unanimous view” among its members, following a gruelling pre-appointment hearing on Tuesday that saw de Souza questioned over exclusions and SEND support at the Inspiration Trust, where she is currently CEO.
The committee’s report shows it was split down party lines, with five Conservative MPs voting in favour of her appointment, and four Labour MPs voting against. However, Conservative chair Robert Halfon and member Dr Caroline Johnson did not vote.

In a letter to Williamson, Halfon warned that not every member was “wholly convinced in her vision and grasp of several of the major issues that she will need to champion” as commissioner.
He added that while the majority was satisfied she is a “competent candidate”, her evidence “highlighted several deficits in her knowledge and experience and she will need to address these as soon as possible”.

“In particular, we were concerned at the candidate’s apparent lack of knowledge of some areas relevant to her new role. Key among these were in the fields of children’s social care and fostering and adoption, youth services, the youth justice system, child and adolescent mental health and the wider immigration system.

The committee recommended that “as a priority” de Souza engaged “with a range of organisations across the areas where she has less direct experience”.
They added she was “unable to outline a position” on key issues for children’s rights, and they were concerned she did not “explain fully how she intends to use evidence to challenge and inform the work of government”.

Basically, a Yes Man who doesn't know much about the job. I can see why Gavin Williamson was keen on her.

It's the Brexit law of twiceness. Everything in Europe is twice what it is here.
Corollary number 1: We can only be winning if things are bad here. If things become good, they will be twice as good in Europe and we will be losing.
Corollary number 2: The worse things get here, the more we are winning. Victory is in our grasp if we can only make things horrible enough.

It probably is, a lot of dogs don't like being separated and they may deliberately be trying to get the dog used to being left alone for a while, mum's dogs won't let her leave the room and she has yet to develop the patience to try and actually train them to accept that she may need to be apart from them at times.

If it's still doing it or if it's starting to look actually uncomfortable then yeah, maybe. But they will often create at the slightest thing.

I think it was probably the steampunk/dieselpunk renaissance in the mid-00s, combined with the internet producing a lot of content that proved Sturgeon's law, combined with me having just read a bunch of 19th century anarchist pamphlets from Project Gutenberg around then, but yeah, hardly any of what called itself steampunk focused on the radical social change advanced steam technology could bring, most of it was just simping to the established order of the late Victorian, which is a big shame given the amount of social dynamic you could play with.

That's probably why I like the later Frostpunk expansions so much, that's much more like what 00s steampunk should have been like, but I'm not sure the wider mood was there in the 00s.

The problem with the Scottish Parliament is "one of the better ones" is typically not that great, given that it's a disproportionately high second tier of government, the list system allows "oh he's sound though isn't he" to get an elected seat without a constituency, and the turnouts lower than the UK ones. If you're too ambitious to be on a council but not good enough at networking to get a safe seat with $party$ then it's a good spot. This is bollocks though, as far as the Scottish Greens go. They aren't ever going to win a FPTP seat so their best can & do sit at Holyrood, people like Patrick Harvie & Ross Greer & Alison Johnstone & John Finnie, & at until today I'd have happily included Wightman in that category for his fantastic campaigning worth on issues as diverse as land ownership across Scotland & attacking short-term landlords (AirBnB type poo poo) in Edinburgh.

And I'm quite confident in saying that of any party with representation above local council level the Scottish Greens are the least worst by some margin.

It’s a nice word, but the idea that Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t engage with the political elements of small-c cyberpunk is an absolutely bonkers absurd assessment that for some reason has been repeated by pretty much every commentator I’ve heard on the game. Politics practically drip off this game, it would probably be the most explicitly left-wing game I’d played in years if I hadn’t also played Disco Elysium.

Like, the very first time I left the player character’s flat I saw a news report about a group of terrorists that called themselves a “trade union” that had caused work stoppages leading to the tragic loss of profits to corporations.

They create a lot of individual bits of the world which are anti-capitalist but then you do most of your work for the cops with no commentary or option to choose not to. It not only doesn't make sense politically but it doesn't make sense in the story - you're a mercenary criminal, why is such a large chunk of your side activity working for the cops in a pretty buddy buddy way? The game is very confused. If anyone's considering playing it I'd recommend against for now even on a banging PC. It just isn't finished. The vast majority of the mechanics either barely work, feel half finished or just Aren't Fun. It's riddled with bugs too, even outside of performance stuff. Stealth was clearly meant to be a very key part of the game but LOS is unclear, you randomly stand up whenever you touch a friendly NPC, and the levels just don't seem very well designed for it and all. Not to mention that half the core mechanics (lethal/non-lethal kills, bodies, to name two) are literally irrelevant or broken. It's like some PS2 poo poo half the time. As you can tell I am not happy that it's turned out this way.
