Hawley very nakedly wants to run in 2024 and is trying to set himself up as the inheritor of Trump's base, and probably recognizes that bigger checks are the best way to retain the Republican Senate majority. lol though if he ends up causing a shutdown just before christmas instead

Heck, Fox was actually first by a year in 1986, and GW didn’t publish Rogue Trader until 1987. Although Space Marines was probably GW since Colonial Marines is more the name that stuck around.

The government is legally prohibited to actually enforce a complete lockdown but this is as close as it'll get, introducing a partial mask mandate (really a strongly worded encouragement), shutting down restaurants, demanding all non-essential workers work from home, publicly operated services like museums, libraries, baths etc will close and limiting the number of people allowed in to shops etc. While the mortality rate is fairly average, the infection rate is among the highest in the EU. It's a bit depressing how we've been wrong about basically everything, like insisting on how herd immunity would protect us in a second wave (its worse now), obliviously devising a national strategy that the regions (who are responsible for providing health care) were neither equipped or prepared to implement and it's biting us in the rear end now. I guess time will tell what strategy was the right one, the official line right now is that an earlier lock down wouldn't have made a difference, but it's embarrassing how poorly Sweden handled the outbreak especially compared to the other nordic countries.
