Just finished S2 of The Orville last night. A few friends and I started it a couple of months ago after putting off trying it because we had all been a bit curious but the first trailers looked like Family Guy in space. Our whole group chat about it has mainly been variations on HOLY poo poo THIS IS ACTUALLY GOOD.

It genuinely makes Picard and Discovery even worse by comparison Like, yes you CAN make great Star Trek in 2020

I find it amusing that Fox Sunday nights are 2.5 zombie series with a revolving door for the 4th. Also that they seem to be attempting to make The Moodys a holiday tradition

mllaneza posted:It's even better than Lower Decks, but by a significantly narrower margin - LDS is a legit good show. LDS is clearly made by people who love Star Trek but it's not interesting enough to actually be a Star Trek or funny enough to be anything else; I still get the feeling it was greenlit mainly because animation is typically cheaper than live action and because The Orville managed somehow to avoid getting immediately cancelled. The Mandalorian proves (IMO, anyway) that it's possible to do fan service while bringing something fresh and good to the table, and similarly to The Orville continues to demonstrate how badly made modern Trek shows are by comparison.

I like Lower Decks too. I just like the optomistic future, but also humans still being human unlike in Star Trek where everyone relaxes with Shakespeare and concertos.

I still don't get why everyone abbreviates The Lower Decks as LDS rather than TLD. What the hell does the S stand for?

Also as great an abbreviation as STD would be, 5 letter DISCO is the superior. For me it was canonized onscreen with the workout shirts.

I was wondering why there was some new activity and good to see them filming again. Also from a page back, Seth leaves, John Hamm as Captain.

I've never seen Mad Men, so I mostly know Jon Hamm as "the world's dumbest doctor" on 30 Rock and "world's dumbest cult leader" on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and therefore I could absolutely see him on the Orville
