Fun story I heard - Spotlight was started by a husband-wife team:

Wife: Former reporter for Mercury News who got fired suspiciously soon after submitting a story about local corruption involving the mayor and... chamber of commerce, IIRC
Husband: Local labor leader

Apparently after she was fired they went off into the wilderness for a while, got jobs in Las Vegas or something, and then came back with all her journalistic connections and all his labor connections and set up SJ Spotlight. This is why if you look at their donor list it's got a decent number of labor sources and journalistic grant sources.

But yeah, SJ Spotlight and SJ Inside are the places to go.

Landlords justify their rentierism when things are good for them by saying that they deserve the rent because of the risk they are taking in owning the property, then when things are bad for them and that risk they are taking isn't providing guaranteed income then they whine. Landlords need to be eliminated and all their properties given to the people that live there.

Whether or not there is any actual thing that is actually enforced, January is going to be rough. We'll see the last of the NYE cases halfway through, and then another couple weeks for them to progress through sickness/medical system.

That said, January is normally a month when nobody does anything anyway, so hopefully by early February we start to see transmission rates decrease.

My responsibility is to follow the Scriptures which call upon us to occupy the land until Jesus returns.

In response to being passed over for the Senate seat, London Breed's strategy apparently is to whine: https://www.sfgate.com/politics/art...medium=referral

Webpage is ad heavy, so:

quote:

San Francisco Mayor London Breed does not approve of California Secretary of State Alex Padilla's appointment to the United States Senate seat currently held by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

During a virtual press conference Tuesday a couple hours after Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the appointment, Breed called it an "unfortunate situation," hoping to see a Black woman appointed to replace Harris.

"The sad reality is [Harris] was the only African American woman in the Senate at this time, and when you think about the history of this country and the challenges that exist for African Americans especially ... this is a real blow to the African American community, to African American women, to women in general," Breed said. "I think it’s really challenging to put it in words."

Breed was apparently taken aback by the pick despite Padilla being the reported front-runner for quite some time.

"It was definitely a surprise and it's an unfortunate situation as we are trying to move this country forward in making sure that Black lives truly matter and that African Americans have a seat at the table, especially African American women," she said.

Breed's remarks are similar to those made by former S.F. Mayor Willie Brown, who had called for Newsom to appoint one of Reps. Barbara Lee or Karen Bass. Brown previously declared, "There's no way that Gavin Newsom should allow anyone other than a Black woman to fill the seat of Harris," and, "Racial minorities should know they should not try to fill each other's vacancies."

After Tuesday's announcement, both Lee and Bass were gracious and congratulated Padilla, who will become the state's first Latino senator.

"I congratulate Secretary of State @AlexPadilla4CA on his historic appointment to fill VP-elect @KamalaHarris’s seat in the United States Senate," Lee tweeted. "[Padilla] has a track record as a skilled legislator and a steadfast advocate for justice, and I believe he will be a powerful voice in the Senate for those who continue to be denied our country's promise of equality. I look forward to working with him on behalf of all Californians to address the economic and public health crises we are facing, and to create a brighter future for our state and for communities across the country."

"I want to congratulate Alex Padilla -- someone I've known dating back to when he served our city as the youngest-ever President of the Los Angeles City Council," wrote Bass. "... Today, our state gains yet another champion following a distinguished line of individuals who have shattered glass ceilings and hurdled obstacles in their way. After then-Senator Harris’s historic election in 2016 as the first woman of color to represent California, we now have another historic barrier shattered as Alex will be the first Latino to serve California in the United States Senate."

The 1970s were a hell of a decade in SF.

At one point the Zodiac Killer called in to a TV station to have a live chat with famous defense attorney Marvin Belli which is just completely insane to me. Turn on the five o'clock news and listen to a serial killer taunt the city live on the air. It's like something from a ridiculous thriller or Batman movie, yet it actually happened (and was recreated in Fincher's movie about the Zodiac case).

More of a late 1969 than 1970s thing, but still.

Contracts often include clauses for breaking them. People wishing to break contracts without such clauses often offer money to the other party.
Some cities in California have rent control and tenant protection laws that empower tenants at the expense of landlords. This enables the tenant to demand money in exchange for moving out instead of simply accepting an eviction and the theft of their security deposit.

you would be a sucker to not use laws to your advantage. your landlord is using them against you.

late reply, but from the article my understanding is the person stops paying rent, and also demands money to move out. the first part is normal and what an eviction moratorium in a pandemic should mean. the latter is what's sketchy imo

speaking personally, I've lost my job unexpectedly and had to ask my landlord to end my lease early so I could move somewhere cheaper. fortunately for me they agreed. but I didn't ask them to pay me on top of that
