It's kinda rad that ATX has stuck with us for nearly three decades even if the slot design sucks for cooling. I think it would make sense for an updated standard to make it mandatory for the case to provide fan cooling for pci cards and a hardware sensor standard where each card could report temperatures and control the system fans at firmware level so you could do away with the giant separate gpu fan shrouds that end up blocking a bunch of slots or suffocating if you cram too many high power cards in there. Rack servers are much better at cooling in that sense, it's just one big wind tunnel from front to back and server expansion cards typically don't have any fans of their own.

I'm currently finishing putting together a PC upgrade that is to go in a recording studio's rack, so the existing case is awesome and old school. Was a AMD Phenom based system, excuse the cables, it's not quite finished yet... Inside now, 10th gen intel CPU, I have used a Republic of Gamers Asus motherboard as they are just bullet proof and this will be in a mobile studio It's such a sleeper system I love it, boot up into windows takes around 5 seconds There was so much crap in this thing, I had to vacuum and disinfect the whole inside of it

I never look at my case, even though it's some MLG looking thing with LEDs on the fans etc. It sits in the next room with cables passing through to this room on account of the big honking 12 Bay SAS HDD Rack sounding like a cyclone.

I modded my current case long ago, only PC case I've ever modded. I cut a large window into the side and put plexiglass in, put blacklights and some other led's and a toggle switch, and it's pretty rad but I would never bother modding one again cause I almost never turn the lights on. I really wish miniITX was more of a thing, I really want a super compact case that I can put a full sized GPU in.

My case has a glass side and the interior aesthetic is as black and dark as my heart. The only light is from the thin line of orange LEDs around the back of my Aorus motherboard, and it's otherwise all shadowy in there. I even got a black CPU cooler to go with the rest of the aesthetic.

I have one visible scar on my hands - a small, but distinct line on a knuckle on my left hand. It's from pulling a molex power connector out of a drive and banging my hand into some razor sharp edge when it finally, suddenly, gave way. SATA power connectors are one of my favourite quality of life upgrade over the years.

gently caress IDE and its stiff ribbons, shallow connections that’ll come lose or straight up fall out if you gently nudge the ribbon wrong, molex power for aforementioned reasons, and of course JUMPER SETTINGS forever.

God loving drat it I hated that poo poo. I replaced bespoke Dell motherboard after bespoke Dell motherboard in my mom's computer until I got sick of it and bought her something else with standard ATX components so I wouldn't have to hunt through any more shady Ebay auctions for motherboards I could only hope actually followed BTX standards. e. Just realized you were talking about case cooling for GPUs not CPUs, my bad. There's a solution - how many things do we actually insert into expansion slots these days? Just eliminate four out of the eight slots from the midtower ATX spec, two x4 PCIe slots at the top for expansion cards and two more x16 with a two card space between them as dedicated GPU slots. Maybe not even that many, SLI looks to be dead in the water again. rndmnmbr has a new favorite as of 10:20 on Dec 25, 2020 |

modern molex is a lot less awful than the old white connectors, they have this handy extra bit of plastic that forces the connector out when you squeeze the sides AT power plugs and bare pin headers can gently caress off forever though, anything where you can insert the plug upside down or accidentally shift it from side to side and end up blowing up the computer

I have an old IBM PS/2 tower - it looks like yours except it’s much taller and has a big beefy flip-down handle on the top. I think it worked when I mothballed it - MCA cards and all. I was planning on converting it to ATX one day, but after spending a month properly converting a Dell XPS from BTX to ATX, I think I’m going to try to get it running again as a DOS machine.
