General Battuta posted:What were classes like at D3 launch? Most of the abilities were absolutely useless with the way the game was designed. You had stuff like a few second fear but it took roughly an eternity to kill things & it didn't work on bosses. It didn't help that once any attack animation started you'd take the damage in d3. There were a bunch of high mana cost, with minimal mana regen, abilities that did less damage than just holding down m1 with the generator. There were a number of other abilities that just didn't make sense in the context of the game. Really long cooldown abilities (minute+) that when you popped increased damage by a not great amount. The abilities are still in the game but they gave them alternative usefulness or drastically changed numbers and scaling. They also redesigned the relationship wd has with their mana resource at some point and pretty much the entire endgame. This was kind of common across classes. Wizard also had a number of abilities that made no sense in the context of Diablo 3 as it existed at launch. I sort of attributed it to the rated arena pvp that was definitely coming & would be great fun that they cancelled, but after they added a very different pvp late in vanilla d3's life it was clear that no it was just bafflingly disconnected design between different people and teams. General Battuta posted:Who actually handled balance for WC3? Was there any quantitative data used or was it mostly balanced by feel and play test? Was there someone whose job it was to say “orc is too weak/strong” or was everybody just a generalist? No idea if you had any insight into these processes, but my experience in game dev is that internal conversations are often just as frustratingly subjective and incoherent as your average forum thread. There are design/balance people as you might expect who specialize in these things. Anyone could obviously give feedback on design and as an esports person there were definitely times I did so for the titles I worked on or was specifically asked for feedback (and was probably heeded slightly more than most for these things). Again, not being around for the early years of WC3 I didn't see how that process went down at the time. I can say that people working on balance can sometimes strongly disagree with one another, so when you think something is a decision of "the balance team" there's no guarantee there was a consensus - this doesn't just go for Blizzard titles but for any competitive game that is likely to have balance specialists.

General Battuta posted:What were classes like at D3 launch? the only class I played was also witch doctor. the only meaningful build was one where you got something like 500% extra mana regen while at least four of your abilities were on cooldown, so you'd use every CD as it came up and spend the rest of the time channeling a normally-mana-intensive stampede of zombie bears

Brawling sounds interesting in concept but 1) it is ALWAYS going to wind up with one or more players one-shotting the other guy forever and ever and ever because the other guy didn't spend as much time grinding and optimising for a few more trillionths of a percent on stats or damage and 2) on the Switch, there's absolutely no way to communicate a desire to duel. Brawling is what they call PVP in D3, there's an NPC to facilitate it.

Whats' the combined dps of two shadow wolves? It's got a cooldown of 1 so it's easy to find the dps but I have no clue how to calculate in the critical strike

I don’t know the values but the variables can be changed. Mathematically you can write it as basedamage + (critdamage-basedamage*critrate). 100 + (200-100)(0.5). Average of 20 damage, 15% chance to do double damage. 20 + (40-20)(.15) The speed is irrelevant. You can also calculate the bonus alone by just (40-20)(.15) on every hit jokes fucked around with this message at 09:09 on Dec 20, 2020 |

How is the speed irrelevant? If two units each deal 100 damage and one attacks every second and the other every two, is the first not double dps

I mean the speed is irrelevant to calculating the bonus of critical strike. Having critical strike is essentially just a flat damage bonus, akin to trueshot aura over the long term. In effect bringing Critical Strike is functionally identical to, like, trueshot aura over the long term but is less useful and more selfish. It is last in line though which might be useful if you’re doing weird things. E: I looked it up and did some math. Rank 1: each wolf does 11.5 DPS Rank 2: each wolf does 19.8 DPS with critical strike factored in Rank 3: each wolf does 25.8 DPS with critical strike factored in So if your dude hits twice as fast your DPS is doubled, with or without critical strike. It is multiplicative with damage bonuses though, such as from Kodo beasts. Quick and dirty: whatever damage your wolf does add 20% as a flat damage bonus. jokes fucked around with this message at 11:22 on Dec 20, 2020 |

Yeah it's not a high base damage to double but it adds up because they attack quick and there's two of them often. Even level 2 wolves sicced on an intel hero will route them pretty quick even if they dont kill them outright.

Probability is a brainfuck. If critical strike triggers on an attack, on which subsequent attack is the next critical strike most likely to occur? It's not a trick question exactly, but the answer is deeply counterintuitive. (An equivalent question is "if you miss a 99% shot in XCOM, which subsequent 99% shot is most likely to be the next one you miss?") I wonder if the RNG that WC3 uses is truly random or if it cheats a bit to get rid of stuff like the above which doesn't 'feel random' to the human brain. I think RNGs are traditionally not totally random, and can be predicted by another bit of software but for a human it’s functionally random absent some dev fuckery like in Xcom.

General Battuta posted:Probability is a brainfuck. If critical strike triggers on an attack, on which subsequent attack is the next critical strike most likely to occur? It's not a trick question exactly, but the answer is deeply counterintuitive. the wc3 rng is very much not random - to-crit% and such increase for each miss. the average works out to be what it says on the can, but you're really unlikely to see long streaks of misses. I'd assume this is how it's done in basically all games, since people are in general awful at probabilities - and things like seeing 7 misses in a row in a 1/3 hit-probability (or whatever) is liable to get the developer death threats even though it's not at all that unlikely.

Probability is a funny game because it truly only (sufficiently to the layman) explains past patterns anyways. Tomorrow you could roll 500 6’s on a dice in a row, and people generally accept a 1 in 6 probability of rolling a 6. If you rolled 500 dice rolls yesterday you’d probably question the validity of the 1 in 6 probability of rolling a 6.

i still have a flash drive with a ton of my favorite old maps, including some real weird ones. every once in a while i think about going back in and doing a game of dark deeds 2 or parasite, but then i remember how blizzard destroyed an 18 year old game. one old custom map i remember being particularly bizarre was called dawn of the dead, but it was different from regular zombie survival maps in a few bizarre ways. like you were in a mall, and zombies were trying to break in... but it was simultaneously a life of a peasant map, and you had to get jobs even during the apocalypse, and i mean like regular lovely mall jobs like working at the food court. also, the mall was packed with peasant NPCs, and if one died they could respawn as a zombie, so if you felt like being a dickhead you could go into a corner and shoot some guy and before you knew it there would be zombies everywhere.

My attempt at playing Reforged when it came out made it clear that it seemed to break a lot of custom maps, too. And no custom campaign support - come on, Blizzard.

It's shocking and almost unbelievable that they could gently caress it up. Add a few more tavern heroes, or maybe another so each race has 5. Tweak a few old heroes since lmao at seeing some of them ever in non gimmick or non-twitch requests. New items, another couple mercs at each tileset's camp. New creeps, new or revised camps. It's not quite BW but I do consider it a very well balanced game which is an impressive feat considering the number of factions and how different they play; there's definitely uphill battles but rarely did it feel unenjoyably difficult or even impossible. It's possible they just didn't want them to gently caress with it and ruin a good thing. Still think they should have added new poo poo. Mixing up the meta is a great thing

HvU both get a good amount of, basically, specifically diametrically opposed mechanics but HU is more skewed towards being specifically anti-undead-- dispel and holy light are major "gently caress you"s specifically to undead. Like, dispel does 200 damage to summoned units, skeletons (not skeletal mages which was a TFT addition) have 180. Undead is just better at taking down a bunch of low-hp units. Between atom/meat wagons and frost nova, footmen are fully useless while grunts and even archers have excellent staying power the entire game. If night elf's rejuvenation did damage to enemy orcs, you'd probably think that's kinda hosed.
