Man I played through most of Blaze Union without knowing a word of Japanese back in the day and had fun, though good lord some of that character art was :yikes:

Couldn't get into Gloria Union when I tried it but hey, if it actually gets localized, who knows?

beyond having rpgmaker-size sprites, does it really look like a standard rpgmaker game? the overworld graphics seem pretty distinct, and the in-battle graphics even moreso

Labyrinth of Refrain is too try hard grimdark. Collect this item which is poop made from eating poop made of eaten human beings. A bunch of events happen in the game where your character just stands by passively, watches something horrible happen, then solves the problem and it feels fetishy. I'm starting to question if the body part damage system is part of this.

After resolving to stop watching cutscenes I still got hit with one of the test voice clips for my wooden marionette of "Oooh I hope that wasn't a nip slip". Finally the Horny 4 Puppets guro fetishists boat has come in.

Wild Arms music was so good. First time I ever encountered an mp3 was when I was looking for music from that game (Boomerang Flash's theme).

michiko naruke's done lots of great music for games since wild arms too, she did the music for nora to toki no koubou and you can occasionally see her popping up to do guest tracks and arrangements, most notably her zelda and castlevania arrangements for smash but she also composed a full vocal theme for atelier firis

The Linke is a party I grudgingly accept exists, but I've learned enough about DDR-history I can't bring myself to trust a party that was once the SED, a party leading the corrupt state apparatus ...

You'd never know. I've seen RPG-Maker games looking even less then RPG-Maker games. Some of the RGP-Makers (especially the ones using Ruby) allow a lot of fancy tricks if you're able to program them in

How are the Disgaea games? I know they get to ridiculous numbers but I assume that's mostly relegated to post-game shenanigans. Is it more FFT-style learning abilities/classes or is it closer to like a puzzle game in disguise or something else entirely? And if there was only one to get, which one would it be?

You can play through the story like a pretty standard srpg with some unique mechanics and they're totally fine, but the long term appeal is getting the ridiculous numbers and figuring out how to do that efficiently. Skills are mostly tied to weapon types, but some more specialized classes and most unique characters have unique skills. 2 is I think generally regarded as the best story-wise, but 1 is also fine (whatever the latest version is), and 5 has the most bells and whistles.

Chrono Trigger for sure. Mario RPG only really approaches Chrono Trigger's super ease when you get the Lazy Shell or if you're absurdly good at timing jumps. It's still a really easy game but you're more likely to die in it than CT outside of like "accidentally wander into Lavos unprepared." Princess Peach is hilariously overpowered as a healer though so it isn't like either game is hard.

To answer the last question first, it's 5.

You can grind your way past the main story if you like that sort of thing, but I personally think it's much more fun if you don't. It's very nicely tuned to just play through it naturally. It's also not a secret puzzle game, because you do build your own party, and the combat is pretty granular. The classes and their skills are mostly about fighting more efficiently in the situations they're specialised for; there's no "you absolutely need specifically Class Ability X to counter Mechanic Y".

The lag on lcd TV's might gently caress up your timing on the hits in mario, but both games are incredibly easy. Just go try and fine some obscure game that's even easier so you guys don't have to argue about cult classics.

SMRPG for me. With how CT calculates damage you can wander into some content underleveled and find yourself taking way more damage than you can handle. SMRPG I think uses subtractive defenses so a slightly lower level or outdated equipment has less of an impact. Bumping up the battle speed and playing on active mode also works as a bit of a difficulty slider in CT. At max speed your characters may be getting outturned by enemies constantly. Lastly, CT has some really good healing options and items but nothing quite matches the ridiculous healing of Toadstool's Group Hug or Come Back.

i would say chrono trigger if only because it doesn't involve any platforming. you can always grind your way through tricky battles, but if you're just here for an rpg and not a somewhat clunky isometric platformer then i could see areas like bean valley and barrel volcano getting frustrating

Barudak
May 7, 2007

CT is miles easier because a) 0 platforming and b) none of the god accursed timed hits, the devil's rpg mechanic

you basically have two choices, and they are swap weapons, or make a godweapon that has 100 affinity vs everything by grinding on the training dummies so you don't care about blunt/edged/piercing damage typing. neither is especially appealing but any given player will dislike one slightly less than the other.

Also, as a new IK I am itching to exercise my powers, so do you guys want a new thread title? The current one is pretty good though. And since this thread is ten years old (!!) do you think it needs some new information in the OP? The second post has a list of threads about specific RPG threads which might be nice to update.

That said, some of the stages are kinda puzzle-ish in the way Geo Panels are laid out. There's never only one solution, but sometimes a stage can be a test of "how do I break this Geo Panel to get rid of the Enemy Boost/Invincibility effect" or "hey, there's a really cool piece of equipment in the Bonus Gauge, how do I build it high enough to get it?"

I'm playing Persona 5 for the first time and it asks you to name your character at the start when the only thing you know about them is "Is A Thief," so I settled on "Cooper Loxley" after D.B. and Robin Hood.
