A single shot just isn't "a spectacularly poo poo idea", even though his pronouncement may have been.
Whether it is in reality a good idea or not is almost immaterial, I would put money on Blair having read fewer words on the subject than any of us have individually typed arguing about this.

Exploration is ill-advised.
DE hot takes are always fun, like all those game journalists who had no idea what they were looking at and basically end up projecting themselves onto it and not liking what they see. Putting points into the 'take drugs, get laid' skill and then being horrified as they keep clicking the options to hit on women.

Blair says we should only use one dose of a vaccine its creators specify needs two doses? But he also said Iraq had WMDs, so he should gently caress off back to the dustbin of discredited irrelevancy.

I had a long argument with someone that Sunday Friend is one of the most loathsome people in the entire game. Because all the rest are fundamentally defined by failure but Sunday Friend is about success and that makes him so so much worse.

I’ve not got far in DE but my favourite thing so far is either trying to persuade people I did the crime (because I want it to be a dark mystery but can’t think of anything cool) or failing physical checks so thoroughly people aren’t even mad, they just feel sorry for me. Couple of solid laugh out loud moments already and I enjoyed telling that lorry driver to gently caress off.

Much more interesting than anime video games is my EGG BASED OBSERVATION: since lockdown started, both Sainsburys and Tesco seem to have started packaging their own-brand eggs in transparent plastic packaging, rather than the traditional cardboard punnet. I have noticed this subtle transition to less eco-friendly packaging in other areas too, and I wonder whether businesses are using sociopolitical turmoil to cover up the fact they're increasing their bottom line by using more plastic packaging.

I am sure someone in this thread has a phd in egg packing (wet or otherwise), so I welcome your expertise.

Treated myself in the Steam Winter Sale to a bunch of games on my wishlist, decided to download and play the smallest of them while I waited for the others to download.

After an hour of playing Superliminal I realise it's the best puzzle game I've played since Portal (which it's definitely, ahem, influenced by in tone and setting if not gameplay) and I also know why it's the first video game I've ever seen with an actual mental health warning:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SX8XMwMw6Y

Apparently it's quite short (some people say it can be played through in under an hour) but then the original Portal was only a couple of dozen levels - it's worth a tenner of anyone's money, IMO.

Most supermarkets are actually trying to cut down on plastic waste, they still, of course, produce enormous amounts of it, but they are actually doing things to phase it out, one thing you might have noticed is the move to the reusable veg bags, though that has taken a bit of a hit this year with hygiene concerns meaning some of them have started bagging a lot of stuff, including bread, in solid plastic again.

Is plastic packaging less eco-friendly than cardboard? They're both worse than bringing your own, but creating new food safe cardboard from pulp is heavier in carbon than molding something out of plastic and I've never seen any proof that the cardboard egg cartons were recycled, they just look like they might be.

Cardboard biodegrades quickly and easily, most plastics rather less so.

Plastic egg cartons are so you don’t need to open the eggs to see if they’re broken. It’s part of the “don’t touch anything unless it’s going in your trolley” thing. I’m not saying there aren’t ulterior motives, but that’s the reason given in the industry (according to poultry-based gossip in my heavily rural community. Do you know you can get a live turkey for a fiver this year? A fiver!)

I would guess most of the supermarkets near me produce maybe... I dunno say 50 cubic meters of card and plastic waste just from deliveries every day, going by the volume of the cages.

When the large wagons do deliveries they drop off the stock and then pick up the cages again with the packaging stuffed in, and they usually shift about 25 cages at the end of the day and in the morning after nightshift, and each cage apparently holds about 1 cubic meter of volume.

So enough to entirely fill like, 15 medium sized cars?

In a landfill anything that biodegrades produces methane. Cardboard is only better than plastic environmentally if a) it gets recycled or b) it's literally dumped in the sea.

That's more an issue with our plastics recycling infrastructure being "dump it on a beach in Malaysia and hope that a crab figures out the Fischer-Tropsch process" though. Creating 1kg of brand new food grade cardboard from wood releases a lot more atmospheric carbon than creating 1kg of new polyethylene from oil, and we now have a wood to PE pathway, although I'm not sure how good the carbon efficiency is.

I artwork packaging for a living. We're seeing more & more people taken on by clients as 'environmental officers' or somesuch asking will that varnish be eco-friendly etc. Fun thing is places like BAT/Nestle cutting back on using foil, even though it's completely recyclable.
Never done an egg carton though.

I know nothing, but isn't a further problem with plastic that "recycling" is quite limited, can only be done once into a worse kind of plastic, and can't even be done with all types in the first place?

Yes, I am a middle class type who just thinks paper/cardboard feels greener, why do you ask?

I've noticed some packaging of chocolate, yoghurt etc, where the seals LOOK like foil but aren't so I can't put them in the relevant recycling bag and they have to go in the bag of destiny destined for the landfill (I assume).

In theory, you could make plastic packaging that was lower-impact than cardboard, at least for some cases where weight matters. The problem is the result would be visually identical to regular plastic, and so wouldn’t support a price premium over regular plastic. So in reality all actually existing plastic is produced using the cheapest, and so often dirtiest, methods possible. Whereas the entire cardboard industry is focused on being an eco friendly alternative to plastic. So it does proper forest management, uses green energy etc.

A good video I stumbled on the other day about plastics recycling and how much of a scam it is. Though he points out even though we only recycle 10% of it. 10% of a really large number is still a LOT, so we shouldn't stop.

Like a KitKat wrapper? Metallic substrate. Usually silver foil type stuff with a white underprint & colour overprinting that. There's a bunch of things like big bag crisp packaging (think Tyrells/Kettle) where it has a recycle symbol AND a 'put this in the bin' symbol & I don't know what the gently caress they're playing at, not worked on those for ages. I mainly do Tobacco/Pharma/Drinks.

Brown Moses used to be a bit of a thread hero for the Belligcat stuff and I'm pretty sure was in touch with Tom Watson about child abuse when that was the big issue of the day, vanished for a bit, and when he came back it was like this.

I'm really not sure what Belligcat is anymore but in the spirit of not touching the poop I don't care to try and find out.
