EDIT: I finally listened to the bethesda guy talk about writing and this video is driving me nuts. I could very easily read too much into it but the way he says "they just want to throw their paper airplanes" and it's like, dude. People would want to engage with your story if your story captured them in any way. But it doesn't, because the story in these games is just so much rear end that tooling around pointlessly is more fun and more interesting. Like the one anecdote he has about the brotherhood of steel questline where he just outright says "you're wrong, and we know you're wrong" in reference to players thinking another, scrapped, idea would have been more fun just really sucks and this guy's entire attitude explains so much about why fallout 3 and 4 are bad if he's the one with a lot of influence over what goes into the game.

It is, but it only came about to begin with because Sony wanted some of that Oblivion action. Miyazaki talked about it for a bit in an interview he did with 4Gamer about Bloodborne, translated here: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/bloodborne-4gamer-interview-with-hidetaka-miyazaki-fully-translated.840059/

quote:

Miyazaki: But with Armored Core for Answer, we were working on that in parallel with Demon’s Souls, so there were quite a few challenges. When Demon’s Souls was in the initial planning stages, and right around the time it was entering the prototype phase, I came on as the director, and at the time, it was a completely different and very difficult project compared to what it ended up becoming.

4Gamer: Is that so?

Miyazaki: Yes. One thing I remember was that the camera perspective was completely different.

At the time, the plan was to make it first-person, or more specifically, a game in which you switched between first and third-person perspectives.

4Gamer: Wow, really?

Miyazaki: Yeah. At the time, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was a really big deal, and I think SCE wanted a game similar to that.

From my perspective, though, I didn’t think we could compete by taking the same approach as Oblivion, so I wanted to focus more on gameplay elements like battles and exploration, and had to do a lot to convince everyone that a third-person camera was the way to go.

He does definitely hit up cases that aren't well known which is why I think I clicked on him to begin with. Like Shinji2015 said, Sony was looking for a western-style open world RPG to rival Oblivion, because Oblivion was going to be Xbox 360-exclusive on the consoles for a year and that was no good. So they tapped this little studio called FromSoftware to make a Sony-exclusive game for them. And it makes some sense when you look at the King's Field games, which as you mentioned, do still influence the Souls games a ton and were kind of primitive but still compelling first person style RPGs that aren't that far off from the style and gameplay of the older TES games. Anyway, the game development was a nightmare and apparently pretty much everyone in FromSoft and Sony had given up on it when Hidetaka Miyazaki successfully lobbied to take over direction on the game and re-shaped it into what we got, partially skating by on not being noticed and also just lying and not telling a lot of Sony people how hard it'd be or ignoring some mandates that were originally in place to make it more like Oblivion.

Except a lot of initial players and reviewers and Sony executives disliked the difficulty and opaque story, so Sony opted not to publish the game outside of Japan. However, there was an English text version made for Asian markets, and all the voice acting was done in English by default since they were designing it in a more western medieval style. So some people were able to import that version and built a cult hype around the game in the West, which led to Atlus publishing the game in North America, and Namco Bandai publishing it in the PAL territories to respectable success. And Namco Bandai saw the potential there, so they agreed to publish another game in that vein that wasn't a Sony-exclusive: Dark Souls.

The game exploded and Sony poo poo themselves for passing on that, and went back to FromSoft to commission another Sony exclusive game in the same style: Bloodborne.

And this is why we can indirectly thank Todd Howard for something good happening for once.

Yeah this is what really gets at me, he references past examples of players not being interested in engaging with his stories and just immediately jumps to the conclusion of "players don't want engaging story, they want a sandbox to gently caress around in" which just completely ignores the litany of games in which players rave about the writing - including games Bethesda has made - so that he doesn't have to confront the fact that maybe he's just a poo poo writer.

And then he hits fallout 4 and keeps bumbling back to "So it's about androids." "It's about robots that look like people." Also, the part where he says they went back to look at games well known for their dialogue and specifically cites Mass Effect and Telletale games but like, they don't seem to have looked at games absolutely beloved for their dialogue or are famous specifically for their dialogue like, I don't know, New Vegas or even older RPGs like maybe fallout and fallout two which, while certainly clunky, people tend to talk about how they liked those conversations and dialogues.

Of the ones I follow Drew Gooden (2.7m subscribers) and Danny Gonzalez (4.2m subscribers) both do Youtube as their fulltime jobs and neither have Patreons. They do supplement with merch stores and ad deals but that's it. Danny does well enough that he was able to do a video where he was going to spend $20k on ads (he ended up not paying that much.)

Thing is most things do kinda go back to the YouTube channel anyway, I wouldn't have any Patrons if it wasn't for YouTube. I live perfectly fine without a "day job" but it's a combination of several things -- YouTube revenue, Twitch revenue, Twitch stream sponsorship thanks to the awesome Antstream, other work I do for creators, Patreon. You can do this full time without having a million subs or anything like that, it's just a question of diversifying a bit (which you should really try to do anyway, I think it's a bit risky to rely entirely on YT ad revenue alone. Of all my revenue streams, it's absolutely the most volatile). I could do more if I chose to.

I think hour for hour. The effort put in counted against money earned then youtube is often on the low end. Especially since the youtube algorithm actively punishes you if you put too much effort into your video. Youtube wants high quality 5 minute videos.

On the other hand I stopped being a Patreon for some leftist Youtubers that I liked because they moved away from monthly well produced and sourced political youtube content to 98% twitch streaming which is something I don't watch.
