Picnic Princess posted:I feel the directions, like I can sense them. I was in Mexico City and my friend was driving me to a place out of town, and I asked if we were headed east. She said "Yeah, why?" I answered. "Just feels like we're going east." This happens often. When I was a kid I needed to be facing north to tell the difference between left and right because left feels like west and right feels like east. As previously posted, I have major left/right problems but I do not have n/s/e/w compass issues to the same extent at all. Like, someone just said to me that they werent at all sure where north was, and I'm thinknig, it's deep winter in Ireland - the sun is so loving far south, its hardly rising above 30 degrees over the horizon -if the sun is behind you, you are probably facing north. Same thing happens, but reversed at midsummer.

I have enormous problems with “lefty loosey, righty tighty “ for undoing screws and such. They’re round. When one side goes left, the other goes right! Why would you not just use clockwise and anticlockwise??

Same thing happens, but reversed at midsummer. They've done studies on this. Even people raised in cultures that use right/left follow directions more easily when they're given in compass directions instead of relative directions.

It's like asking why people don't use starboard and port while driving because a car technically has a prow and bow.

Frequent Handies posted:But... like... you can only turn it one way at a time But when the top of a screw is going to the right, the bottom of the screw is going to the left. If the top of the screw is going left, the bottom is going right. Then Jesus forbid you are looking at a screw from the side because it’s at a weird angle and left and right have no relation to how the screw turns. It’s chaos I tell you. Chaos.

Frequent Handies posted:But... like... you can only turn it one way at a time Yeah, that’s why clockwise/anticlockwise makes more sense to me. If you’re turning a bolt right at the top, the bottom is going left (and then up, and then right as it becomes the top). If you can only get your wrench in at the bottom, you’d be moving it left to tighten.

Just use the right hand rule. Point your thumb the way you want it to move, and turn it the way your fingers point as they curl into a fist.

The hell are you all talking about it doesn't matter "which side of the screw" is moving you can only turn the implement that turns the screw in one direction

Guy I hate it when people tell me that I have to go up some stairs. Don't they realize that a person is just a line and when you're standing on your head up is literally down? Why can't the just use gravity wards and skywards or something.
