I mean, I wouldn’t necessarily go that far (I don’t think he went from California to Portland because he’s a secret chud) but Onstad’s definitely always been really contemptuous of vegetarians/vegans and things like foie gras bans, and Pat was way more of an “overbearing tree hugger” liberal caricature (like the kind of person that doesn’t really exist but conservatives love to imagine themselves pissing off and dunking on) before being made gayer and weirder and more of his own thing.

IIRC Onstad at one point even acknowledged that he tried to make Pat more of a mishmash of weird hostilities and beliefs in order to make him less “Goode Family”.

I think the general sense is that Onstad is some kind of left-kinda sorta libertarian with strong gourmand “let me eat what I want” tendencies in the vein of late 00’s Anthony Bourdain, and who really wasn’t happy with the greenwashing that’s become a big part of urban food scenes.

And also, like a lot of white dudes who hit adulthood in the 90s/00s he didn’t always react in the best way to cultural/humor standards changing around him.

But also also, I agree with other posters who think he’s mainly going after reality TV and the contemporary culture of exploitation and voyeurism (TLC Shows, etc) that was really exploding at that time

Pat’s not liberal unless you think being vegan or gay makes you inherently left wing.

Like, he also spends a bunch of his time calling into talk radio (usually to say why barbers shouldn’t make much money)

Pat is an rear end in a top hat. His every trait is taken up to 11 and used to mistreat and abuse those around him because he is an rear end in a top hat.

He isn't a representative of any specific "safe to mock" archetype, he is that one guy in every friend group that nobody much likes but is kept around via inertia.

wheres the jester, I could do with some pointless nonsense right about now

Yeah Pat has enough conservative views (including his inexplicable grudge with barbers) thatI wasn't really thinking about him. It was mostly that and the face that everyone is white and straight, and if someone Isn't (Envelope, the guy who smoked Mr. Gary's pole, that one robot, Vlad) then that is a huge part of their personality .

Alright. I guess this changes the context somewhat.

Achewood has always had some pretty strong classist undertones to its humor (despite the presence of Roast Beef as a counterpoint to that), that isn't a perspective exclusive to American conservatives though.

Pat is a granola conservative, I am sure there are still many on the west coast. Achewood in general is very middle class/upper middle class guy from the West Coast, but it is also a celebration of the English language, so it's okay.

Overall I'd say it definitely feels like Onstad is the type of guy who hates phoniness, hence why health food gets mocked so often and the occasional knocks on "Obvious Style Christianity" sort of things

It has jokes about poor people/being poor but I never really got a “pointing and laughing” thing from it. I get the sense that Onstad either grew up poor or had a lot of poor friends growing up because a lot of his “beef’s childhood” stuff is spot on.
