At the present there really isn't any performance uplift to NVMe for most tasks, if it's a substantial price increase I'd say it's a fair omission. It hasn't been for the last couple years but with prices being what they are I wouldn't be surprised if they had gone up in the uk.

I don't expect it to be likely to matter with 3200 ram, but I would still caution when buying unmatched ram kits as odds that they won't play nice together goes up with the more sticks. Being the same sku doesn't obviate this.

Hesitate, and you will be lost.
I had a question about USB ports and the ports available in the front of many cases.

The motherboard I'm thinking of buying (ROG Maximum XII Hero) has the following USB 3.2 ports listed. There are also USB 2.0 ports available but I left those out as I don't care about them:

Rear USB Ports:
4 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 port(s)(3 + Type-A +1 + USB Type-C®)
4 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 port(s)(4 x Type-A)

Front USB Ports:
1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 front panel connector port(s)
2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 port(s)

I don't know if the case will have connectors in the front panel or top for the specific USB types on the motherboard. Many of the popular cases I see still have only USB 3.0 ports listed.

If the case doesn't have matching front USB ports, can I buy a USB hub, to connect to the motherboard's rear USB 3.2-Gen2 ports and attach it to the front-top of the case?

Also if I wanted one front-port for stand-alone USB 3.2 Gen2 support would I need one dedicated hub for 3.2-Gen2, then a separate hub to support all the other USB 3.2-Gen1 and lower devices?

Also, I won't need to put the USB Type-C on the hub, unless I can discover a use-case for it.

I'm still doing research so will update my post here with more details if I manage to answer my own question.

PC newbie here.

Under normal circumstances I’d be jumping at getting a system running Ryzen 5 3600 and a GeForce 30X0 but supply is absolutely hosed relative to demand and I don’t see that changing for months.

Because of supply issues I’m looking at prebuilt stuff to take advantage of sales, specifically a PC and two gaming laptops that at least have an RTX 2060:

https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/produc...wE&gclsrc=aw.ds

https://www.amazon.ca/ASUS-Zephyrus...t-ca-default-20

I recognize I’m probably taking a bath on these but the tower at least seems reasonable given it has a 3600, can someone tell me how and why I’m loving myself on these pre-builts?

I should mention that I’m Canadian with a budget of $1500 and using a PC for gaming, general use and light to moderate programming.

I used the opportunity to take some pictures of the thermal paste spread on the CPU and cooler plate. It looks thin, but otherwise covering the entire chip. Is there any cause for concern as to how this turned out? Should I have used more paste?

That looks fine, it's not a cake, it's just filling microscopic voids between the metal headspreader and the metal heatsink. The only way to be wrong would be to have too much or have bubbles/holes with none.

The biggest issue is going to be the power supply in these prebuilts, the 2060 Super is a 175 watt card, I wouldn't be shocked if you run into issues down the line upgrade.

Right now you're buying into a card that is often soundly beaten by a 1080ti for a premium price, but I also looked around on a few other sites and my god it's worse than a few months ago in Canada apparently. If you are ok with the 2060 super's performance and will be for a while... good god that looks like the best "deal" around right now.

One option would be to build a system with the best CPU you can source right now and a placeholder GPU - either a used card or a cheaper card you can resell when supply unbinds.

IMO a laptop is not the right way to go here, particularly since an RTX 2600 mobile version will not punch with the desktop version, so you have an already slower machine that is impossible to upgrade that will never, like, make up for it by getting lighter.

So I got down and spent some time making a list, a pretty tentative one to be fair. My budget is around 1500 euro (I live in Greece, haven't looked at local supply etc yet, but I might be able to order some components through the UK for their 6-year consumer law), and I'll probably also want to buy a display or even two (since the only one I have is VGA, currently connected through a DVI-to-VGA adapter), as well as needing Wi-Fi, since the router is in a different room to the PC.

This is to be an upgrade from an i5 3570 and a GTX660Ti, for reference, and I'll be reusing my existing 3TB SATA hard drive for storage (and a 4TB external).

There are some questions that I have:
-Is it worth upgrading to a 3070 GPU? A quick look suggested a marginal increase in performance for non-marginal increases in money. For reerence, the cheapest 3060Ti available at an aggregator now in Greece is Gigabyte's Eagle model at 550 euro (670 USD)
-Are there any good suggestions for a case? Airflow is important to me, as temperatures in the summer can get up to 40C (although there'd probably be an AC running in the room itself in that case), so I'll probably want some extra fans, unless the case comes with them
-CPU cooling and RAM seemed overwhelming due to the amount of choices, to the point where there's not even a CPU cooler selected. Are there any recommended go-tos? I've heard good stuff about Noctua, and they give me the impression of no frills good cooling, but I don't know much about all the details
-For RAM, I understand that Ryzen CPUs, which seem the best choice for gaming, benefit from higher RAM speed. Is 3600 a good number to aim for, or do I want to look higher? I've been fine with the 16GB I have in the current build, and I guess RAM is a part that can be easily upgraded in the future if 2x16 or 4x8 becomes a necessity so I think I'm good on size
-Would the benefit of a 980 SSD be worthwhile? Apparently some motherboards cannot benefit from it, but it's also almost 100 bucks more expensive than the 970 which seems like a lot compared to something that is already quite good.
-Am I good on power? PCPartPicker has my estimated wattage at 359W, so I did 30% on top of that and sorted for 80+ Titanium PSUs for 500-800W, going for a decent-looking brand.

Again this is very tentative and not necessarily immediate, but my current machine is starting to fall behind more and more by the day, to the point where despite finishing Doom 2016, I couldn't even get through the first level of Eternal due to the extent of the stuttering, and even something like Spyro is uncomfortable to play, and the only way Yakuza 0 runs without microstuttering is by forcing the FPS to 30

Okay so I managed to order an 5600 (msrp too) last week and it showed up christmas eve. Got the whole PC built and am having trouble gettings to work. Running with a Aorus X570 Elite, got the BIOS flashed with qFlash. When I first was turning it on I could hear the fans spin up and see various LEDs power up. No video though. Eventually figured out that maybe a RAM stick wasn't seated all the way.

I got the PC started and installed Windows 10 to my new SSD. Saw the desktop and everything seemed good. Moved the tower out of the kitchen where I was building it, set it up in its forever-home and. . . nothing, won't POST as far as I can tell. I plugged a mobo speaker in and I can hear a single beep shortly after all my LEDs come on, but still no video.

Just cleared CMOS and re-flashed the BIOS and still no joy. Sometimes it seems like it tries to boot up twice? LEDs on, hear the beep, LEDs off and back on, single beep again. Nothing.

Any clue what the hell happened?

Looks like a short beep is a memory error, check if one of the sticks didn't get dislodged when you moved it. Both sides need to click in which takes an uncomfortable amount of force.

Just tried the ram in the other two slots, A1 and B1, no dice.

I bought a Seasonic Focus PLUS Gold 550 for $90 last year and it's been fantastic. It has a quiet mode where the fan only turns on when it needs to. The 650 watt version is in stock here for $130 which isn't too bad.

Is it an HDR display? Also, Window's HDR implementation sucks balls, I'd advise not using it except when running a compatible game / movie even if it wasn't giving you problems.

Did you do the BIOS flashback? If so, are you doing it with the CPU in the board? It’s generally performed without the CPU or ram slotted in, only the PSU and the USB drive.

Also make sure you have power on both the 24- pin and the 12-pin CPU header.

Also really triple check the naming of the BIOS file.

Also sometimes it just hates certain flash drives. Try a bunch of different ones. They tend to like super old ones best.

The fractal stuff is nice, specifically the Meshify line. Their filters, especially in the newer units, are top notch. The define 7 is also really nice if you don’t want a mesh front, and it has a door you can swing open for extra airflow.

Outside of cases that come with a bunch of nice fans, adding extra is usually a good idea. noctua is the gold standard, but there’s other stuff out there that’s close and cheaper.

PSU is fine.

Ram is fine. I’d shoot for any 3600@cl-16 on the QVL if possible, but if the cost/availability is prohibitive I’d buy that kit. It won’t really be a problem.

Did you XMP yet? That maybe made it unstable and it needs to reset and you didn’t clear CMOS long enough?

Rolled back from F31q (2020/12/18) to F30 (2020/09/15) and its working now. Transferring data from one hard drive to another as we speak. Looks like the F30 is the first version of BIOS for this mobo that supports the 5000 series.

I haven't touched XMP or any memory related BIOS yet. Like I said earlier I don't know much about it and right now I'm just focusing on the pure basics. I'm counting this as a win for tonight.

I did run through troubleshooting for the memory sticks and there was no difference in any configuration as far as I can tell. I think a future question is if I want to trust this mobo and Gigabyte or if it is just a matter of it being early days of the BIOS for the 5000 series. New to this whole aspect of computer building so I don't know what is to be expected.

Ain't No Thang.
So after a bunch of testing, seems like my ram slots are FUBAR. 8GB detected only, and only works with 2 ram slots filled in #2 and #4. Gigabyte support is offline til the 4th so I figure I buy a new board, and can return it if I get it from Amazon if Gigabyte actually accepts the RMA.

Thinking something like this?

or https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B...&ref_=pd_gw_unk if I want it ASAP

Going from a Aorus Elite z390. Mainly after the 2 NVME slots, specifically the one with the 22110 sizing on one of them.

Powering 9700k and 3070OC

or for local options I could go

The boards probably fine, the bios may just be fucky.

This is not your board, but F31q (and most of the F31 builds) seems to be giving lots of similar problems to people, specifically with memory and XMP.

Here’s another.

It’s also possible the BIOS flashed badly in the first place.

Well this is a random thing. I connected my PC monitor with an HDMI and when I switched the ‘HDR On’ under Windows settings the display just stopped displaying anything. I rebooted and while the display shows the motherboard logo, after that the display just turns off from no signal. I’m really not sure what happened here?

This is dumb, but does your monitor have an HDR on/off setting? Make sure it’s on.

Thanks for this! Instantly disqualified a few I had been looking at.

As I dig through the list I might as well ask: any specific recommendations? I’m looking for something 600-650watts, hopefully around or under 100$. Doesn’t need to be A tier but quiet is important. No form factor restrictions.

PSUs are hard to come by right now and that list is good enough. Pick anything you can find in stock and in your price range within the tiers you find acceptable (ideally A tier, but b isn’t too bad sometimes).

For PSUs I recommend setting alerts on the r/buildapcsales subreddit and just following the comments when a post happens or checking here. They’re usually following the LTT guide anyway over on that subreddit.

Would you like to play a game?

From what I can tell the HDR was not on. I was able to get a picture after connecting a DisplayPort cable. It's still not showing any image with that HDMI now, even though I am in Windows and the HDR setting in Windows is set to off.

1. I really would like a case with filters. Any other suggestions to look at? I was looking at some Fractal too.
2. Is it worth replacing the case fans with better ones? If so any recommendations?
3. Is the PSU powerful enough/quality for this build?
4. The RAM seems to be used a lot in AMD builds but isnt on their compatibility list, is there anything to watch out for?

As another poster said, the fractal designs cases are really nice. The meshify C has removable dust filters on the front, bottom, and top. It comes with two 120mm fans, but it can take 2x140 in the front while still fitting a full size GPU up to 310mm I believe. I’ve got this configuration in mine with a 3070 Gigabyte GPU without issue.

Noctua is the fan brand recommended around here, although they are having some high demand issues similar to other parts so watch out for scalpers. I’m using 2x140 intake and 1x120 exhaust Noctua redux fans in my meshify build. I’m hanging onto the fans that came with the case as spares for now

RAM should be fine. QVL is just what the mobo manufacturer explicitly tested, but as long as the timings are good and it’s a reputable brand it will be fine. 3600 CL16 seems to be the sweet spot for Zen3 right now

Only thing I would suggest for your build is considering a B550 board over an X570. Unless you expect to need to run two NVMe drives at PCIe 4.0 (unlikely), the B550 boards are a much better value prop, and they don’t have a chipset fan.
