Wolfsbane posted:Depending on who you believe, Socrates may have been killed for teaching young people not to respect their elders. So when you think about it he was the original Jeremy Corbyn. The funny part was after Socrates was convicted, he was asked to set his own punishment. He suggested that he should be kept under house arrest, and given a State pension until the end of his days so he could keep doing talks. The State decided to substitute it with the death penalty in the hope that he would apologise. He didn't and thus willingly went to his death. I also love how people keep talking about Atlantis as if it was a real place when it was included in a Socratic dialogue. ( Well dialogue recorded by Plato about Socrates) Invented by a guy who was known for inventing people to prove points for him. It would be like people going on expeditions in 1,000 years time to find the fabled land of Fraggle Rock as chronicled by historian Jim Hension.

Given what we know now about the collusion between Blair's crew and the tabloids, it's entirely possible that the phrase was invented by some oval office working for Blair.

The Question IRL posted:The funny part was after Socrates was convicted, he was asked to set his own punishment. “How do you want to die?” “Of old age at home after drinking and loving myself to death at your expense while still doing everything you’ve accused me of ha ha ha.” Like, it’s a dumb joke sure, but hell of a thing to say to people literally about to pass your death sentence. E: BBC had an interesting story today to the effect that the IRA tried to shut Sinn Fein out of the peace talks on the grounds they were too socialist, based on recently declassified Irish government docs. (Phone posting so: bbc.com/news/world-Europe-55453601). They quote the file reference (2020/17/34.260900 Dec 20) several times in the article so it looks genuine. NHS definition of morbidly obese is a BMI > 40, which at my height would be 275 pounds, 25 less than Homer had to get to - I think I can make that without needing a muumuu. (Cheeringly, while looking that up, I realised I'd dropped from "obese" to "overweight" by the week before Christmas when I suspended my diet, be interesting to see if I'm back up to rag on a stick levels on New Years Day when I start back up)
