There's a reason why East Asia is doing better than every other part of the world that's had major outbreaks.

And thats the thing China was locking poo poo down hard while the W.H.O sucked ccp dick. Remember the picture of the chinese dude in Italy saying he isnt a virus? then a month later Italy got hosed hard and by that point good luck containing it.

On the plus side business going to places like Vietnam as a result of sanctions will help a lot of people, and probably won't fund land (and sea) grabs with a side of genocide by a fascist dictatorship as a byproduct.

Closer to home they've been caught running huge illegal fishing ops into North Korean waters (and pretty much everyone else in the region). Apparently crashing the fish and squid populations and forcing the DPRK fishermen to make attempts further out to sea on small, lovely boats meant to stay near shore. With the predictable resulting bodycount.

Further out you had the gigantic fleet fishing right off the Galapagos, inside Ecuadorian waters, and getting chased around by various navies in the region.

I mean the whole point of a wide range of economic sanctions is forcing US/European corporations to not just go with the biggest profit/lowest cost (slave) labor solution, so in a way you could get that wish too!

Therefore anyone who has amassed any significant wealth or influence has a massive closet full of skeletons that can be brought up to take him/her down.

Xi started to use his anti-corruption dept as a weapon to remove anyone who threatened him, or anyone who could potentially threaten him from the picture. It was the perfect strategy since the masses were tired of seeing coal bosses and their fail-kids and party officials and their families flagrantly flaunting unfathomable amounts of money. Nobody was about to say anything contrary to what Xi was doing as the camera would have planned around at them and people would ask, "what do you have to hide?"

WHO was slicing it real thin even after that trying to separate it between can spread through the air and "Airborne". There are technical differences with droplet size being one but functionally made no difference for the public at large. For health workers it meant the difference between mask, gowns, face shields or space suits. WHO was also pulling a lot of other BS.

A Chinese citizen journalist held since May for her livestream reporting from Wuhan as the COVID-19 outbreak unfolded was sentenced to four years in prison on Monday, almost a year after details of an “unknown viral pneumonia” surfaced in the central China city.
Zhang Zhan, a former lawyer, was accused of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” for her reporting in the chaotic initial stages of the outbreak.
Her live reports and essays were widely shared on social media platforms in February, grabbing the attention of authorities, who have punished eight virus whistle-blowers so far as they try to stamp out criticism of the government’s response to the outbreak.

So during sars the WHO had a effective leadership that basically published the truth. Even the mayor of Vancouver went to the WHO and complained how the WHO was making them look bad (by saying there was problem and recomending what should be done)

During SARS they also told the CCP "hey we have this information and well you can come forward with it or we can come forward with it"

if china has to care about what other people think and say in order to not die then they will care about what other people think and say

a nontrivial part of why china has been so much more belligerent over the last half a decade is because a huge part of Xi's platform is saying 'gently caress the coastal elites, we're going to bring success to the rural poor by practicing self-sufficiency' which has been part of every regressive leadership playbook in the last 200 years, including donny t's (who came to power riding a pretty similar sentiment).

it has a track record of working out for the poor it's supposed to help exactly 0 times over those 200 years, which America at least partially figured out over the last 4 years but China is still rolling forward on.

you can (eventually) force a liberalization of foreign and trade policy by simply refusing to engage with a power that is doing bad things, but in between making that decision and the regressive government either collapsing or surrendering you basically have an unknown number of years or decades of economic grind that hurts the innocent poor the most. however, this can reasonably be stacked up against the theoretical damage that regressive power will do while it is being propped up by engaging on its terms, though good luck making that stacking objective in any way since you're inherently going to be comparing like and unlike.

I laugh whenever "gently caress the coastal elites" come up. It has nothing to do with them being elites or being "Better" or them imposing anything in the literal middle of nowhere. It's simple economics. If you have access to the ocean you can trade with the rest of the world extremely cheaply as ship can move cargo cheaper than every other option the moment boats were invented. Plus it's where all the rivers flow out to, food like fish. It's why people live on the coast. This land lock/costal imbalance is built into the geography and there is no "fix". Direct wealth transfers can soften the imbalance which already happens via farm subsidies(There are other reasons too). States like CA/NY will always pay more into Federal than they get out due to this.

Even sovereign countries can't overcome this disadvantages so must play what niches they do have which in the case of the US is to farm the hell out of it. America is so good at it, they are making the world fatter. As technology gets better less farmers are needed which pressures family farms which might not have the capital to compete with conglomerates which the solution for the families is to create their own conglomerates. Of course, they value individuality so much I wouldn't be surprised if they think it is socialism because you are cooperating with your neighbours beyond bringing a plate. Places like Georgia have become a mini Hollywood much like Canada has with Vancouver. Secondary silicone valleys have popped up taking advantage of cheaper costs of living.

Yup, its literally just an ease and ability to trade thing. Telecom infrastructure goes a long way to equalizing some stuff but a port is still gonna just be better for the foreseeable future. The USA has kind of mitigated the problem by continuing to pour money into cities and letting lovely small nowheresville towns die. Midwestern cities aren’t as rich in opportunities as true major ports like LA or NYC but having access to decent airports and good internet means that it’s still good enough for a lot of purposes.

The same is true everywhere. Most of China's population lives on the coast, I wouldn't be surprised if the number is about the same.

Empires are predicated on ease of movement/logistics to better trade, to project military power. The world's greatest empires all have access to boats. In the case of Mongolian's high mobility with horses and being land locked. British Empire, 1/4 of the world had only a small army, but the best navy. It's the same for America. Those aircraft carriers aren't only there to obliterate countries or to bitch about how much they cost, they are there to show the flag, to own the seas. Even arresting pirates is important so is inspecting for contraband, it's to demonstrate your control. Submarines are great in war but can't perform other function. A vague sense of dread isn't going to drive off pirates, inspect boats, or provide staying power or do the one thing a sub should never do by showing the flag.

If America wants to continue to be top dog it must control the sea and trade with people that share values. That is the price. Yes, racism quite literally hurts your wallet. America First is the dumbest idea if you want to stay strong. It's why I laugh at anybody who tries to justify it or play up orange's trade deals or diplomacy wins. Everybody is waiting for him to gently caress off while throwing a bone or two.

I had (had) a friend in Beijing who was telling me how great it was when they drove out all the migrant workers from Beijing. When they bulldozed dozens of slum neighborhoods right at the start of loving winter.

There is approximately zero chance no one dies from that bullshit. A couple months after I took a walk around Chaoyang (near the mall where some dude got stabbed a few years prior) through a neighborhood where I used to jog. Flattened, with no sign of any plans for construction. You could see the outlines of where brick homes had been, crushed brick mixed with fragments of household effects and loving kids toys compacted into new road surface.

My father in law had like 5 or 6 of his employees staying in his apartment for a couple months after that purge. The main staging area for his business (where he lived) was among the places leveled.

Anyway, my idiot friend, who I think was from Beijing IIRC thought this was just the bee's knees, rousting 2 million people with little or no notice at almost the worst possible time.

I'll usually defend China against most criticism (because most of what Anglophones say about it is ignorant bullshit), but man, Beijing in particular can gently caress right off. Beijing is absolutely not trying to turn itself into Shanghai, a city with at least a bit of character and humanity. The goal of Beijing’s leadership is to turn it into a safe, bland, sterile, charmless city that satisfies the central government’s obsession with order and control.

Evidence of that is the migrant worker expulsion campaign you mentioned, the demolishing of small streetside shops, the crackdown on street vendors, and a hundred other things. My favorite was when they ordered all skyscrapers and other tall buildings to take down their exterior signs because ??? - that, at least, got quietly shelved pretty quickly because people were loudly complaining that it was hard to find your way when you’re surrounded by a bunch of anonymous tall buildings with no identifying signage whatsoever.
