The scandal broke in late 2012 but the pair had been doing it for a while and a couple sources I found state that Al Qaeda had been using the same tactic, something Petraeus would've known. It was unclear to me when the first mention of it fell into public consciousness, not to mention you don't know which spy movie it was One thing to note is that the practice of using an unsent draft is not helpful because drafts made and erased are still retained but aren't subject to the normal data retention (and deletion) policies but more importantly the practice directly led in this case to Petraeus being caught when his IP showed up accessing that GMail account which was used to harass an unrelated third party
