My old class mate's wife is an art historian (not very good, and not very smart) and wrote a gushing article about graffiti and how they were the greatest thing since sliced milk, COMPLETELY disregarding the vandalism aspect, like graffiti swastikas and dongs just weren't a thing for her. I asked her about it and she was like "well people obviously know I didn't mean that sort of thing. When people say "graffiti" they don't mean that sort of thing*" so I just shrugged and said OK and the next morning after the piece ran someone had written gently caress YOU in big letters on their door. *) yeah I don't know how anyone can be so out of touch with the world

Graffiti rules and that includes giant sloppy dongs. In fact the gargantuan veiny schlongs might be the most pure art of all graffiti.

Everyone except the man basically agrees that NYC's subway trains look better tagged to hell and back. Graffiti that isn't nazi should be encouraged, dongs included. Around where I am there's a bunch of sidewalk with handprints and stuff from when the cement was freshly laid down and I love it.

oh hey, this literally just popped up on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/143664062331242/posts/3875728985791379/ quote:The Narrows has been open to the public all summer, but rangers were not patrolling due to dangerous toxins in the water. Normally, patrols occur on a regular basis to help track the conditions. After the toxin risk was lowered, Ranger John was the first ranger to patrol the area since the beginning of summer. He was able to cover less than a mile. Here is part of the report:

Carthag Tuek posted:Some assholes defaced ancient helleristninger (petroglyphs) in Norway recently, and there are also recent cases from America and Australia, etc. Historical defacement is historical, so it doesn't count as vandalism to me. The anonymous Mamluk, Chloe, Halfdan, and Arni are cool in my book. At what point does it become historical? I was in a cave in the Four Corners region in Utah and found graffiti in English dating to 1910. It was on top of graffiti from 500 years before. That graffiti was on top of even older markings. This was a cave that was not marked on tourist maps. You just have to know where it is. I thought the more modern graffiti was a nice along side the older stuff that was nice along the much older stuff. It shows progression. The last marks were dated in the 70's.

A few years back an artist put up a poster with a naked crucified politician on it: https://imgur.com/I3tVDXr (nws I guess) Someone didn't like it and threw black paint over it. Some students then cut down the painting, managed to remove the paint without damaging the painting underneath and sold it. When asked about it the artist was cool with it. Later another painting was put up on a wall by the same artist: Then the painting disappeared. At first it people thought that the artist had removed but it turned out to be some guy that wanted to sell it. As it turns out there's actually a black market for stolen street art in Norway, which is baffling for many reasons, most of all because it isn't that lucrative.

It was on top of graffiti from 500 years before. That graffiti was on top of even older markings. That's a valid question, and there is a very human desire to make your mark that can be seen throughout history. The problem when it comes to places like National Parks is that more people are visiting these places then ever before, and when one person writes their name on a rock it encourages everyone else to make a mark. It can become overwhelming, quickly, especially in popular and/or easily accessible places. And when you're talking about places that are being preserved for natural beauty or historical/cultural significance, it really loving sucks when someone decides to leave behind their loving instagram handle. These places are for everyone, not just for you.

IMO it's one of those things that shouldn't actually be encouraged but if you manage to pull it off and not get caught well kudos you're part of history now.

Specifically the railroad ones also get bent out of shape about bike lanes as well.

Every year [except this year] my city hosts a model train exposition. 50% displays, 50% market stalls specialising in incredibly niche modelling tools. Every year I go. Every year I witness at least 5 screaming arguments and at least 1 fistfight. Last time a dude got stabbed with a pair of teeny-tiny pliers over an argument about light bulbs.

As a general rule the more niche a community the more zealous they are about it. People will go absolutely nuts about things like model trains. That said the giant displays you see at fairs and stuff are super dope.
