Edit: Also unless I’m out of date I think “carrying stuff” actually is one of the main goals of these robots?

my kinda ape posted:It's technologically impressive but ultimately doesn't seem very useful to me. I guess they would be good for carrying heavy loads in rough terrain if you can't bring a donkey or camel for some reason? They'd probably be pretty handy if you were walking around in the mountains on Mars, but anywhere on earth you'd be better served by a wheeled vehicle, a pack animal, or a quadcopter. Using a human body designed to do so many things as a basis for a killing machine is silly. A drone and a small payload is just as effective and costs basically nothing. They're good for interfacing with human infrastructure. As Robocop showed us, robots suck at stairs. You won't get a quadcopter past a closed door. You won't get a treaded vehicle up a stair well.

Dillbag posted:i see you've seen Elysium Anything with Sharlto Copley is great. Doubly so if you combine with Neill Blomkamp. Where they are now is a true tale of looking after someone who helped you when you were nothing. quote:Sharlto Copley was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, to Linda Stocks and Bruce Copley, a former university professor. His childhood dreams of acting were put on hold for many years when his television production company was one of few in his native South Africa granted licensing to create content for broadcast. Rather than acting in front of the camera, Copley found himself the businessman running the production behind the scenes, becoming South Africa's youngest television producer at age 25. It was during this time that he met a then-teen-aged Neill Blomkamp, who worked at Copley's company in exchange for use of the computers to pursue his talent for design. Blomkamp would many years later go on to direct Copley in his star-making debut as nervous bureaucrat Wikus van de Merwe in the Oscar nominated science fiction hit District 9 (2009)

All I see in those videos is ‘crippling arthritis injuries and disability at age 40’ And yeah, it’s also dumb because no matter how impressive stupid human tricks are, a mechanical device would be able to do the same job at thousands or tens of thousands the rate that a human can.

The guy pinging those... drawn sheet metal tubes, or whatever they are, is clearly meant to be inspecting them as well as they come off the line, and is simply not doing that to save time. That’s why it’s so “fast” and why they’re not using a ramp to just lift them off the sockets.

don't shovel or plow while it's still snowing and there is snow on the road. it's just a waste of time. during BIG FUCKOFF SNOW MONTH in 2015 once i went out and shoveled half way through a storm thinking i'd be smart and do half at a time but everywhere i shoveled had filled in with almost just as much snow as the surrounding areas. then i bought a plane ticket and went to california for two weeks because gently caress it

It’s better for my back to shovel early in a big storm and then again a few hours later if it’s heavy enough. But then again, I’m not doing a sidewalk next to a god drat thunder dome of plows

Yeah nothing sucks more than attempting to shovel a sidewalk that has been walked on a bunch and compacted/iced over. At that point it’s often just better to toss grit/salt on it and get out there to scrape it if things warm up to soften it. The bylaws here say you have to clear the walks by 10 am the morning after a snow and so many people don’t and it’s annoying.
