simple math of dividing my police department's payroll from 2019 and dividing by total number of employees gives an average of $98k a year per position doing the same for the health department(which includes the hospital) and the school district? $67 and $66 grand a year. i'd imagine it gets even worse the larger a city gets as overtime fraud becomes more rampant

It's probably not easy to keep track of names, and I don't exactly post in this thread every single day or anything. I wouldn't call myself a thread regular. If Steezo wanted to make a point about drive-by posting, point taken. In any case, here's something more than a single line of mod sass on why I think police officers' willingness to 'just do the job' is a big issue: My vantage point is that I work in a hospital in Europe as a resident. My career isn't very long, just a few years after graduation. Nowadays I do easy mostly research-based stuff, but there was a time where I was a greenhorn working in an urban area inhabited by predominantly the socio-economically unfortunate. Something between a real city and a poor US mining town, you can probably imagine the situation. Western European-style 'socialism' means there's a bit more social spending, but don't think for even a moment that a slightly larger budget suddenly makes for competent social services. Far too often we had to deal with the consequences of improperly trained police officers bringing in a delirious grandparent or someone who was having a mental health crisis. So that issue where police officers are being told to do things they aren't trained or equipped for isn't just an American one, in case you were wondering. Police unions are pretty strong over here in Europe as well. Police officers should therefore hold the (sometimes unique) position of being able to refuse tasks they feel they aren't equipped or trained for, but I've not experienced that. And it's not just the old guard, twenty, thirty-somethings haul in restrained people like they're cattle. Why? Well, they have to. Because nobody else is going to do it if they don't. Their preparedness to do the job poorly means this societal issue is pushed entirely onto the already vulnerable people who end up the victims of the officers' inadequate resources, which means regular people and the policymakers they elect don't have to care. That someone's mildly-demented granny ends up in an assisted living facility with a broken arm because Officer McGoodguy was given a nightstick, cuffs, a 19-year old partner who hasn't even entirely finished the country's brand of police academy training yet, and 2 days of training in defusing crises isn't their problem. It's become the victim's problem and depending on their affinity for empathy, the officer's problem. This doubly sucks because it makes the good officers hate their job. The primary problem is policy and spending, but the consequences of that problem only exist because there's a willingness to be used as the do-everything force during the evenings and nights. I'm not telling cops to stop doing their job entirely, I just think there should be far more pushback on their side and I think police officers should embrace the idea that they're not being called incompetent by the people who say they shouldn't do X, Y, and Z, but that they're saying you just can't be good at everything. Something like that doesn't fit in CSPAM because it's not a rant about Trump and I don't want to post it in D&D because D&D is full of debatelords without convictions or genuine opinions. I don't post in this thread very often, but I read it every few days and have always kept up with its posts. Sometimes I take a small break, like when Daniel Shaver happened. That was very bad. But McNally, this thread is a collection of examples of police brutality and posters' reactions and responses to those events. It didn't entirely start off as that and previous editions of this thread weren't just that, but you can't deny that every so often that's what it turns into. I think that is because the people who post here have skin in the game, and I like to think the people who post in this thread actually care. This thread's content makes people feel a certain way, and I think it's almost cruel to require posters to keep their frustrations under wraps. I just thought an appeal to politeness after what has been posted on the last few pages was tone deaf. I don't think those two posters' posts were malevolent or ghoulish or evil. I think they were posts made by very reasonable but frustrated people and I think that's just what you're supposed to get with the stuff that's posted here. Godholio posted:If it puts your mind at ease, sure. It's kind of strange you came crawling out of the woodwork to name and shame CSPAM thrice all of a sudden. You're using that phrase to characterize me as a member of a collective that is out to get you, which is a weird mindset to have. I don't think it's fair to spin a bad post into a rivalry or feud between subforums.

When someone whose username I don't recognize drops what they think is a winning zinger out of (from my perspective) nowhere, I sometimes click on post history. Usually they're from CSPAM or Games, and almost everything on the first page of your history was CSPAM. I'm not a fan of that forum for a number of reasons, a big one being when I've tried to read it, it's usually just people being lovely and sniping at each other. I prefer the discourse we usually have in here, so I like to see the bullshit get stomped out quickly. I figured you were one of the dozens of shitheads who've popped in over the years to pwn the chud vets and just fling poo poo on the walls, but apparently you've been in GIP for a while and your name never caught my eye or changed or my lovely memory just lost track. So I apologize for not recognizing you as a regular (or thinking you were one of the people I described above), but not for thinking your post was bullshit. McNally's a good dude and a good mod and puts up with a lot of nonsense without people jumping his case for keeping this one of the better places to discuss poo poo like this.
