Have something Norwegian for once. Many want religion out of society... because it can create extreme and oppressive actions... but banishment of religion doesn't necessarily solve the problem. A weapon is only as dangerous as its owner... and even if it's banished... there are alternatives. The focus on religion becomes wrong when the problem is humans... and our eternal struggle between light and darkness. (The strip is called Vantina and is absolute horseshit. Somehow it keeps getting published.)

After reading the New Yorker's excellent long-form essay The Plague Year, I decided to go back to the beginning of the thread and look for the first cartoons to mention what would eventually become the most important issue of 2020. Revisiting the time when the most important issues were possible war with Iran, impeachment, Bernie clearly locking up the Democratic nomination, and Harry and Meghan was quite a trip, but as near as I can tell this cartoon from January 21 was the first coronavirus mention ITT:Sandpuppy posted:17 Interestingly enough the British papers were the main ones talking about it in late January: Cloud Potato posted:Evening Standard: This next one is from January 26 and could just be a coincidence, or it could mean that COVID had already somewhat entered the American zeitgeist: Sandpuppy posted:2 And then Ben came out with this doozy that same day: Ben 'I'm not even bothering to hide my racism now' Garrison posted:This wasn’t part of the trade deal… I did start my search ten pages into the thread or so, so there might be an early one I missed, or possibly even something from late 2019. Modelling suggests that SARS-CoV-2 was already gaining a foothold in the US at the time these cartoons were published so it's kind of creepy and fascinating to me at least, like reading a newspaper from September 10, 2001. Also, lol: January 25.

It's amazing how much Americans thought COVID-19 was just another one of those wacky Asian sicknesses that you'd hear about in the news for a little bit and then would go away. Like SARS or swine flu or something. I heard that from a lot of people in January/February.

Also really weird to think: by the time some of these cartoons went up, work on at least a few the vaccines being rolled out now had already been completed.

There was no reason for an average American to think that this would be any different.

Another belief is that since they think masks cut off oxygen and trap germs, that the masks will keep us sick and weak and give us brain damage and thus make us easily controlled.

DalaranJ posted:Is there some sort of British cliche about bad deals and fish? Or is this primarily something having to do with the fishing industry? Brits prioritized fishing very high in discussions about the deal. The deal hosed over fishing and also every other industry, because it turns out selling things to the mainland is a rather important part of every industry the UK has.

Pants Donkey posted:Enjoy the last Garrisons of 2020 No, no I will not enjoy them. Also, I'm more confused than ever about what exactly "The Swamp" is in the mind of conservatives. From the rant Garrison posted it seems like it's mostly "rich people have a disproportionate control over the government" which, I mean, yeah I agree with that, but Trump was never going to do anything to stop that from happening. Also "The Swamp" wants to give people vaccines I guess, which is good thing, so "The Swamp" has some upsides I guess?

"The Swamp" is essentially politicians who care more about helping themselves and their rich buddies than the people. Which is, you know, a problem that we actually have with American politicians, the weird part is thinking that Trump and other far right Republicans don't also fit that definition.
