I use HCF, fortunately haven't had to use it much but I've been satisfied with it so far. Lil bee and I drove out to Port Stephens to visit friends and maybe see a little beach... It's pissed down rain all day which isn't ideal but I'll still take this over the bush fires. A satisfactory start to 2021.

it's very cool that the Australian flag patch that Dr Weir wears in Event Horizon had an aboriginal flag in place of the union jack. also its very laughable to think that this science hating nation would produce a scientist that figures out warp travel

Basic hospital cover is all pretty much identical across funds, same with optical extras. Dental is the only bit that's a bit relative so if you already have a dentist you like just find out their preferred provider. Otherwise whatever fund you choose will have a list of the practices that they cover. Most funds have more or less identical waiting periods for access to services but any difference across what you're looking for might be a selling point between two otherwise identical mobs

I'm at the point where I'm on-and-off tossing around the idea of just dropping my cover to minimal hospital cover and self-insuring. I'm paying about $180/mo (I'm in the no-rebate tier) for mid-level hospital and low-level extras. For extras, this gets me: - $200/year optical, which I at least use at the moment - $400/year dental, which I should use more than I do but even still two checkups a year would get me at best about $250 - $300/year physio/chriro/etc. that I never use - $150/year pharmacy that I only barely scratch because most of my meds are on the PBS and thus don't attract any rebate I sometimes think I may as well just pay for the minimum required to not pay the MLS and then pocket the difference for when I do need extras cover. It's to the point where I'll basically have to buy glasses just for the sake of it to extract some value, and I don't really like that sort of consumerism for consumerism's sake. But then on the flipside, my $180/mo is like $145 hospital and $35 extras, so at best I'd save ~$400-450/year if I kept the same hospital, or I could reduce my hospital and bank on the fact that my relatively low-risk lifestyle means I won't clean myself up downhill BMXing or something, which at best gets it down to about $100/mo and thus save about $1k/year. I really don't know how private health insurance as an industry plans to survive for much longer. Anyone who doesn't need it for the tax writeoff must look at it and just wonder why they don't pocket the $1200+/year as savings for hospital expenses, especially considering that in many cases you end up with a substantial out-of-pocket anyway due to the excess levels required to get fees down that low (like $750). Not to mention that if push comes to shove, we've got a solid public health system backing them anyway. It really feels like it's at that tipping point where the MLS + lifetime health loading + rebate tiers for middle-income earners are just enough to make people bother with it, but if it keeps rising like it has over the last decade that very quickly won't be the case. And as soon as the exodus starts, the economics of providing cover for the 'value' they currently offer quickly becomes impossible.

I pay out of pocket for dental - was a few grand a couple of years back for a root canal - but otherwise make back the losses by just never going to a doctor for anything I get charged for (which so far has been nothing other than dental)

I got a low level of cover with medibank, paid it for like six months, realised that i would get a better deal if i just funnelled that same money into a new bank account, and tried to cancel it. They called up my wife, asked why we were cancelling, and then they cut us a sick deal. They rearranged what our cover was to something that suited us better, and halved what we pay, and we’ve been on it ever since. The plan’s not perfect, I still waste a bit of money on ‘alternative medicine’ cover each year, but I’ve got a good deal and won’t complain. I can dig up the numbers later if anybody is curious.

I dropped it and then the MLS bit me in the rear end one year so just have the bare minimum and never use it. Seems whack.

Lmao good luck getting comprehensive health coverage with a documented chronic illness. I had to put off getting a Braca gene screening while I was doing psychiatric inpatient therapy on my insurance because if I turned out to have the male tit cancer gene my payments would have tripled. Mrs turnbeug literally cannot get private hospital coverage with her thing, they just outright reject any application for anything other than extras

Why not just pay the MLS and increase medicare's funds instead of making private health company richer?
