You see, what I always thought was "If the US helped make Mexico a nice place, then Mexican people wouldn't need to risk their lives to go to the US, they could have happy lives in Mexico".

What Trump and Republicans realized was that they could just make the US shittier than Mexico and no one will want to come here, and they coukd also get richer loving over their countrymen.

If anything, 2020 shows that our technology is capable of solving difficult problems when a central authority throws unlimited resources at R&D, and that decades of government funded research grants proved to be an incredible return on investment.

2020 *also* shows that absent strong central coordination none of that loving matters because we don't have the command and control to actually get the end product into people's arms

After thinking about it, I think class conscious ends up trumping sports team rivalry and government continues to do whatever is necessary to keep number going up forever. Biden doesn't have any fundamental disagreements or grudges against the republicans. They'll work together to keep the money flowing to the rich, and the democrats will put out some token plan every so often so the republican can vote it down and maintain kayfabe.

Nothing will fundamentally change.

I'm coming around to the idea that nothing has to get better. It can just keep getting worse, forever, and the people who suffer and get left behind will just quietly drink themselves to death. Or maybe blow up a city block. It doesn't matter either way. The markets arent tethered to reality in any meaningful way, and it turns out businesses are more efficient when they arent burdened with employees or manufacturing. Its all just shuffling numbers around from the safety of gated communities.

Its just going to get worse and worse until we die, and nothing can stop it.

Happy new year

Charles “Chuck” Feeney, 89, who cofounded airport retailer Duty Free Shoppers with Robert Miller in 1960, amassed billions while living a life of monklike frugality. As a philanthropist, he pioneered the idea of Giving While Living—spending most of your fortune on big, hands-on charity bets instead of funding a foundation upon death. Since you can't take it with you—why not give it all away, have control of where it goes and see the results with your own eyes?

“We learned a lot. We would do some things differently, but I am very satisfied. I feel very good about completing this on my watch,” Feeney tells Forbes. “My thanks to all who joined us on this journey. And to those wondering about Giving While Living: Try it, you'll like it.”

Feeney gave $3.7 billion to education, including nearly $1 billion to his alma mater, Cornell, which he attended on the G.I. Bill. More than $870 million went to human rights and social change, like $62 million in grants to abolish the death penalty in the U.S. and $76 million for grassroots campaigns supporting the passage of Obamacare. He gave more than $700 million in gifts to health ranging from a $270 million grant to improve public healthcare in Vietnam to a $176 million gift to the Global Brain Health Institute, a partnership program between Trinity College Dublin and the University of California, San Francisco.
No word on whether any spirits were involved, other than the ones sold in the duty-free shops.

a lot of people are, but what's more important than having a intuition that is 90% right - but which will absolute fleece you the other 10% of the time - is having a wide enough portfolio to eat losses and insider trading your loving rear end off. Not to mention you need a fuckload of money for compounding in any reasonable time frame to matter.
