Eh it had been safe assumption when the EU was more reliant on the US and Chinese-EU trade was comparatively more minor, but what is tying the EU to US at the hip at this point especially without the UK being involved? Merkel became chancellor in a very different geopolitical environment, one where the US held almost all the cards. and more recently she has been taking a pragmatic approach that is gradually being shared by Macron.

"shared by macron" means that whatever she's doing is wrong, because the French are literally always wrong when it comes to foreign policy

Lol. That's what I like to see. But I'd still argue that it's not that big of a step. European oligarchs get to pocket a bit more of the loot and feel a bit more in control, while China gets a few avenues to park its surplus.

Keep in mind Germany is the president of the EU council in the 2nd half of 2020. You got to think EU pushing thru the investment deal with China in the last day of 2020 is Germany's way of sending Biden a message.

I watch decent amount of DW news, that poisoned Russian opposition politician has gotten a lot of news coverage in the Germany press, alot more than on France24 and other UK channels. The guy was poisoned in Russia but so how he was helicoptered to a Germany hospital right away. If you tell me Germany anti Merkel fractions and CIA didn't have a hand it driving a knift between the Germany-Russia relationship, I wouldn't believe it.

The opposite I'd say. If you rush the deal through while the Orange One sits in the WH you don't have to tell the new admin to gently caress off when they object.

The incoming administration already objected and was told no though, Trump technically being in the White House maybe made it a bit easier but the EU clearly made its choice. Also, it is unclear what Biden has to give the EU beyond rejoining the Paris accords (the Iran deal may be dead for good) and just being nicer.

It doesn't seem to have been enough to matter though, and honestly, it seems like it might have worked to Putin's advantage at this point. According to polling, most of the Russian public thinks it was a conspiracy conducted by the West (I don't think it was btw to be clear) or don't care. In the end, only about 15% believe he was poisoned by the Russian government. In addition, Navalny going to the European Parliment to demand more sanctions didn't go over well either with the public, and now he may be permanently barred from returning to Russia without facing 10 years in prison on embezzlement charges. In the West, it seems like Putin lost this round, but the reality seems to have turned out to Kremlin's advantage, especially since as long as Navalny is in exile, his movement is going to be seriously weakened. Merkel knows that the Nordstream pipeline is more important than games with the Kremlin. Also, the whole FSB prank call also seems to be aimed at a foreign audience.

To be clear, I don't give a poo poo about Putin himself, but the way elements of the West has reacted to the whole situation shows a clear misunderstanding of Russian political culture.

Is there a Russia thread on cspam or does this one just work as a general catch all thread for anything that isn't western europe?

Because I am still trying to get over watching Brat 1 and 2. The first movie released in 1997 was a bleak nihilistic portrayal of post soviet Russia, criminal underworld, and the lack of any hope for the future.

While the sequel that came out in 2000 is just a straight up action movie with some strong nationalist overtones. The criminal organizations are exploiting the russian people and are funneling their ill-gotten gains to white collar criminals in America. While the main character who loves his country has to go and right those wrongs.

It's wild how the popularity of the first movie led to the sequel being just pure nationalist propaganda.

They have been Russia/former Soviet threads (there is still a Caucasus one), but they often die out to a lack of interest (ironic). Considering the timing, the difference has to be the Second Chechen War and the fact that Putin (who was Prime Minister in 1999) was able to use seething resentment to bolster the Russian state and that period hasn't ended yet.

quote:

Going into the previous party congress (2016), Vietnam was a rather different place in important respects. A gap had opened between the party and government structures, weakening policy coordination. Two-term prime minister Nguyen Tan Dung was riding a wave of prosperity. He'd branded himself as a straight talker, a reformer, somewhat dismissive of party dogma, receptive to new ideas, and savvy in international fora. Dung aimed to unseat Nguyen Phu Trong as general secretary.

Trong rallied an 'anybody but Dung' coalition, crushed his rival, and mounted a sustained campaign against the institutional corruption that had flourished during the Dung years. Trong presided also over a campaign of party purification intended to weed out "backsliders and opportunists." On both fronts, the targets were often but not exclusively associates of the former prime minister.

sounds familiar!

but i guess there's a liberal challenge happening?

quote:

Prime Minister Phuc wants to succeed Nguyen Phu Trong as general secretary, and in the non-public way that high Communist Party officials campaign, he's been barnstorming Vietnam from top to bottom. Now too ill to think about staying on himself, Trong is intent on handing over his office to someone he can trust to sustain his signature policies, the anti-corruption and party purification campaigns, and to lock down folks who dare to utter deviant thoughts. In short, Phuc's not his man.

feel dumb in retrospect because of course hes just another Falun Gong creep

quote:

olehouse didn’t respond to requests for comment. But his newfound viral success after Trump’s retweets mark a new level of internet prominence for the Columbus, Ohio, resident. Holehouse worked in multiple positions at The Epoch Times from 2008 to 2015, ultimately leaving the company as its “luxury strategy consultant,” according to his LinkedIn page. At the same time, Holehouse worked at several luxury-accessory companies, and now runs a company that buys jewelry and watches.

Shortly before Holehouse’s video was released, Falun Gong-affiliated websites began to purge references to Holehouse’s status as a Falun Gong practitioner. As first reported on debunking website Metabunk, Falun Gong website Clear Harmony removed a reference to an appearance Holehouse made at a Minnesota Falun Gong conference in 2007. The section about Holehouse was deleted sometime after Nov. 9, 2020, according to a cache of the website.

Falun Gong website Minghui.org, meanwhile, described Holehouse as a “practitioner” of “Falun Dafa,” another term for Falun Gong, in a 2015 article about a New York City conference.

“It is nice to see so many practitioners from all over, including some old friends,” Holehouse is quoted as saying on the website. “This is a pure land.”

All mentions of Holehouse were scrubbed from the Minghui website sometime after Dec. 9, 2020, according to an archive of the page.

also makes it clear that trump is at some level working directly with the falun gong, because they knew to scrub all this guys stuff before trump tweeted out the videos

Mishandling Defaults

A default on its own is unpleasant, not unacceptable – this is a risk bond investors are prepared to take. But now there is a deepening suspicion that SOEs will move good assets out before creditors drag them to court. In less than one month, three unrelated companies – an auto giant in the northeast Liaoning province, a coal miner in the affluent central Henan province, and a chip manufacturing powerhouse – shifted their subsidiaries’ stock holdings out before defaulting. That makes a pattern.

This is how I feel about it too. It's a pretty limited deal centered on a few key industries. On paper it gives more to the Europeans than the Chinese, and I think that on paper promise will translate to reality for Europe, but only if they continue to have a relatively stable trading relationship with China.

And therein lies the rub. At a time when many American hawks are calling for a coordinated campaign to economically encircle and strangle China, the Europeans are signing an agreement that strongly signals they have no intention to play along. After all, if they do go along with the US, the gains for European business made by this deal can be rolled back and the many billions of euros they stand to gain will go up in flames. That's the real benefit for China, it's yet another step that further intertwines the economies of China and the EU and throws a wrench in the plans of US strategic planners who wish to decouple from China.

Yeah, I mean purely on the merits it's poo poo. As a European I don't want to encourage our Oligarchs to move even more industrial capacity to China and China shouldn't give up any control over it's industries to the European upper classes. However, if the sense of momentum created by the rush to make a buck and European politicians patting themselves on the back keeps us out of the next rounds of bullshit it might be worth it.

about navalny... it came up on aaron mate's show that within russia, navalny is not considered to be a big-time opposition figure like he's portrayed in the west. perhaps more of a gary johnson type. and his main issue is railing against corruption, which is a big problem. but it's interesting how the western media will boost these figures for their own purposes.

don't think he's that important either, but one guy who has built a following online is nikolai platoshkin, who is interesting because he's a former tractor driver-machinist who then became a diplomat posted to the russian consulate in houston, and leans hard into soviet nostalgia. his movement seems like an old-age pensioners movement that (i would guess) attracted some support after putin's pension reforms:

^^ Well I kind of believe in Navalny's poisoned story, after all Russia tried to poisoned 2 different former Russian intelligence officers in UK. But I definitely don't buy that story he conned the Russian spy explaining the whole poison operation to him over the phone. That just sound faker than Adrian Zenz poo poo.

While we are on the subject of Russia, they recently made some major revision to the constitution. Retired president will have huge influence over their congress, and the actual power is shifting from president to the 100 plus -men State Council. So I say Putin is at least seriously considering stepping down. That bald guy in Belarus should take note.
