The incoming administration already objected and was told no though, Trump technically being in the White House maybe made it a bit easier but the EU clearly made its choice. To be clear, I don't give a poo poo about Putin himself, but the way elements of the West has reacted to the whole situation shows a clear misunderstanding of Russian political culture. Is there a Russia thread on cspam or does this one just work as a general catch all thread for anything that isn't western europe? Because I am still trying to get over watching Brat 1 and 2. The first movie released in 1997 was a bleak nihilistic portrayal of post soviet Russia, criminal underworld, and the lack of any hope for the future. While the sequel that came out in 2000 is just a straight up action movie with some strong nationalist overtones. The criminal organizations are exploiting the russian people and are funneling their ill-gotten gains to white collar criminals in America. While the main character who loves his country has to go and right those wrongs. It's wild how the popularity of the first movie led to the sequel being just pure nationalist propaganda.

They have been Russia/former Soviet threads (there is still a Caucasus one), but they often die out to a lack of interest (ironic). Considering the timing, the difference has to be the Second Chechen War and the fact that Putin (who was Prime Minister in 1999) was able to use seething resentment to bolster the Russian state and that period hasn't ended yet.

On paper it gives more to the Europeans than the Chinese, and I think that on paper promise will translate to reality for Europe, but only if they continue to have a relatively stable trading relationship with China. And therein lies the rub. At a time when many American hawks are calling for a coordinated campaign to economically encircle and strangle China, the Europeans are signing an agreement that strongly signals they have no intention to play along. After all, if they do go along with the US, the gains for European business made by this deal can be rolled back and the many billions of euros they stand to gain will go up in flames. That's the real benefit for China, it's yet another step that further intertwines the economies of China and the EU and throws a wrench in the plans of US strategic planners who wish to decouple from China.

As a European I don't want to encourage our Oligarchs to move even more industrial capacity to China and China shouldn't give up any control over it's industries to the European upper classes. However, if the sense of momentum created by the rush to make a buck and European politicians patting themselves on the back keeps us out of the next rounds of bullshit it might be worth it.

^^ Well I kind of believe in Navalny's poisoned story, after all Russia tried to poisoned 2 different former Russian intelligence officers in UK. But I definitely don't buy that story he conned the Russian spy explaining the whole poison operation to him over the phone. That just sound faker than Adrian Zenz poo poo. While we are on the subject of Russia, they recently made some major revision to the constitution. Retired president will have huge influence over their congress, and the actual power is shifting from president to the 100 plus -men State Council.
