I want skin tones in games because, if I may, my immersion Like I can totally enjoy this game on a more relatable level, even minutely? Hell yep then I’m going to. It was cool having darker skinned Barbies, why not extend it elsewhere? I’m not playing Pokémon for a goddamn lesson on the Biafran War. I am playing it to have fun and I can have even more fun by finally having a protagonist that looks sorrrta like me. It is harming no one, sometimes a pipe is just a fuckin pipe

I mean, I like creating characters, people who are not me. My Shepard in Mass Effect ended up being a dark skinned woman, I'm not gonna say it made me more empathetic but I saw it as a valid choice. Again here specifically the issue seems to have been a person with prior... baggage being kinda dogwhistle-y, and there's the issue when you have a public ID that's tied to your avatar, and you're part of this fan community where people know each other and... it gets weird.

there's a herpe looking sort of infection thing in Warframe that gets passed between players as well including a minority of bug chasers. the meltdown happens when a streamer catches it and it "ruins" their fashion while on cam. it used to take several days to cure, the entire time they'd be slowly melting down.

An unrelated meltdown: Chen, a member of the Korean k-pop group EXO, announced he was getting married last year. This was unusual because k-pop idols tend to be very discreet with their relationships and only get married after they have retired from performing. The reason for this has a lot to do with unhealthy standards in the industry, but the majority of fans understand that even though most idols put on a front of being single in public they probably have girlfriends/boyfriends in their personal life. And then there are fans who don't get this! After the announcement, there was a small group of EXO-fans who believed he had betrayed the fans' trust and should be kicked out of the group. An anonymous Korean fan posted a public letter to Chen on social media that got some attention. (Keep in mind this is translated from Korean. Jongdae is Chen's real name.) Link to translation quote:You take responsibility over the person that you love, but I'm sad that you're not taking responsibility over the person who loves you. Chen later posted an apology for upsetting fans with his announcement. The reason why k-pop fandom has a bad reputation online is mostly due to extremist fans like this who become truly obsessed with their favorite idols. The korean word for a delusional/stalker k-pop fan is sasaeng, you can google it for more weird stories.

Here's a twitter thread reading through the most elaborate fan meltdown I've seen in a long time... a 500+ page google doc callout written by a 26 year old against a 13 year old in the fandom for Glitch Techs, a Disney show I've never heard of. It is everything dumb and terrible about fandom discourse, and as is true of so much Fandom Bullshit it comes down to shipping. The 13 year old has created an original character as a self-insert to ship with a show character who's 15 years old. This is Not Okay because eventually the child will grow up and become older than the character, which turns the whole thing into retroactive pedophilia. There's a mini-essay about the age of consent. Romeo and Juliet laws get cited. Asexuality is also discussed for reasons unclear to me. This gem gets dropped: The author is also incredibly upset that the 13 year old has negative opinions about other ships in the fandom and that they act like, well, a 13 year old on the internet. 13 year old also got some pretty sweet dunks on the author, which are also documented. Reading the excerpts of the google doc is like staring into the sun. There are also two other 20-somethings who were involved in the creation of this document, and at no point did anyone stop to think about what the gently caress they were doing. PYF Fan Meltdown: Turning the whole thing into retroactive pedophilia

The adult fan writes nsfw of the show, and doesn't tag it nsfw. They use the tag "lemon", which is both ancient and kinda obscure, especially to today's youth. It says in their profile "all characters agreed to 18+" but gently caress off. The drama kicked off when the kid mentioned they were uncomfortable with that fic, and asked for better tags to avoid it. E: literally writing porn of children's shows, and getting mad when children state their discomfort. DicktheCat has a new favorite as of 05:47 on Jan 4, 2021 |

There’s some ugly, hateful misogyny coming from inside the house when it comes to people - and to be frank it’s often cis white women - who are so invested in their fictional characters doing one another they let lose all grasp on reality. Related to Cumberbatch there’s a S4 episode of Sherlock that devotes time to making fun of these kind of fans, although it came from a spiteful place considering those were the majority audience by that point in the show. Assistant Manager Devil posted:PYF Fan Meltdown: Turning the whole thing into retroactive pedophilia There’s a disturbing trend of this in online fandom of all stripes. Maybe not this extreme, but you see a lot of adult age gaps (say 10 years apart where the characters are say, 20 and 30) being called “pedophilia” as a way to shut down everything to ships they dislike to attempting to silence someone talking about racism and other forms of bigotry.

I was talking about this with my roommate the other day! My personal favorite was reading about the "problematic height gap" between the characters Lio and Galo from the movie Promare. As a background; the movie does every single thing to make the two leads gay except saying "they're gay!!" so of course, it's a popular gay ship. But you see, there's a twist. Galo is TALLER than Lio, quite a bit taller in fact! Despite the two characters actually kissing in the movie, the fandom really shouldn't ship Galo with Lio, because of the problematic height gap. Yes, if you are a tall person and want to date a short person, you might actually be trying to date a child and that's problematic. See also: Tall Mommy discourse on twitter from yesterday. Gosh you know, it must be so hard to be short and have all these tall people who only want to date you because you remind them of a child and for that reason only. It's real hosed up thinking and it goes hand in hand with calling anything they don't like something something pedophilia. Most of this stuff is pretty harmless in the long run but that one gets me a little worried.

You're welcome.

For the youngins out there lemon/lime/grapefruit is the old “citrus scale” used pre-2000 and a bit after because N/SFW didn’t exist yet and putting an X-rating on stuff just Wasn’t Done. After tumblr got purged of porn some users went back to that scale to tag with since just using NSFW would get the post taken down. What gets me is a 26 yo would be far too young to know that scale firsthand since it fell largely out of use by the mid-00s, so in addition to being a total rear end she has no appreciation for why that was used in the first place (partly because back then there was fear any queer content would get your site/account blitzed and that was just in the US). The height gap bullshit sounds like if you dig deep enough it’s a TERF talking point. I have no evidence for this but I’d be totally unsurprised if the source of the Promare drama was a TERF. BrigadierSensible posted:when I was young "lemon" was a derogatory slur for lesbians. I’m sorry if you had that thrown at you.
