Exactly. That oval office could contract the black death, endure it, survive it, and then nail a six episode series with Anibale about the Berlusconi years or some poo poo.

I don't get why anyone actually uses Twitter. On the upside you can make a popular tweet and a bunch of people like it and make you feel good. On the downside you can make a bad tweet and your entire life is ruined by an angry mob of people and anyone in your proximity is drug down into hell with you.

My only exposure to John Roderick was through listening to Friendly Fire. He seemed pretty affable, but he sure likes to hear himself talk.

explain to me what careerist means

The word has a negative connotation that isn't entirely applicable here, but essentially it means that Matt has tried to make a career of being a mainstream investigative reporter in the vein of Bob Woodward and Seymour Hersh Unfortunately, the era of the Western ruling elite allowing some self-reflection is over and anyone who is annoying to the insular club of establishment media gets attacked (for instance, by casting doubt on the Washington narrative about Russiagate). I think Matt has suddenly found the door slammed in his face by the same sort of coastal liberals that used to heap praise on his financial crisis reporting and it's broken his brain.

I dunno if this is like facetious or some more has come out (I've actually been trying to avoid news because it's all so depressing/pathetic). I'm an elementary school teacher and what that guy described is not even noteworthy in terms of weird hosed up poo poo parents do to their kids. I remember reading the thread and thinking, that's dumb, lol. The fact that people are calling it child abuse is insane. how much its blown up is seriously sad. as if there arent more important things in the world

careerist is just an obsolete term for grifter (someone with a patreon i dont like, no grifting required). its funny to call taibbi a careerist when you examine his career lol

THS
Sep 15, 2017

careerist is not synonymous with grifter. taibbi did have his ambitions cut off and seems very frustrated at his career trajectory being stunted. but he’s not grifting. grifting would imply he’s just taking everyone for a ride and doesn’t believe his own reporting. he believes in his own reporting but is disappointed that it doesn’t result in the commiserate prestige, because he still believes journalism that isn’t just repeating government talking points is prestigious

if he were a careerist he wouldn't have spent the past 4 years making sure he could never be a cable news contributor or write for a major publication. when i asked what was meant by careeriest I got "well it's a negative term that doesnt really apply"

this has gently caress all to do with careerism, he just wanted to sound smart while saying he doesnt like matt taibbi

quote:

careerist
noun [ C ] often disapproving
US /kəˈrɪr.ɪst/ UK /kəˈrɪə.rɪst/

someone who thinks that their career is more important than anything else, and who will do anything to be successful in it

wow this really sounds like taibbi, who famously threw away his beliefs in order to advance his career.

careerist is synomyous with grifter in this lovely discourse because both are used to mean "i look down on this person but i can't articulate an actual grievance and i dont expect anyone to call me out on it"
