Would invite me over for dinners and functions with their extended family all the time. Then mate and girl broke up cos she was a dirty cheating meth-head. I still hang with the folks and rest of the family though.

I was always told to avoid spook because it was a racist slur in America despite it being a word for spy or intelligence officer in the UK. Is it a thing like spaz here where it's fallen out of use so isn't the worst word you could use anymore? The BBC had a spy show called Spooks which got renamed to MI-5 for American broadcast, so I guess it was still dubious as of ~2002

As an American, spook is one of those words where my first instinct isn’t going to be that you’re racist, but it definitely sets off a warning bell in my head unless it’s very clear we’ve been talking about spies.

I ran into this with "coon" as in raccoon as in that fucker that keeps outsmarting me to get at my trash but it's apparently a slur in America or something. Just a dumb short hand though so I just use the full word now.

Spook is historically a slur for Black people in America, but a relatively esoteric one so with no context I'd probably assume someone was talking about spies or ghosts, but it'd prick my ears up enough that I'd start looking pretty closely for context.

Is that cheese still the main brand there? I never heard 'spook' as a slur though, useful to know.

First year of college some bullshit english class made us write about family of the not blood related kind, and the instructor hauled out the big red sharpie to accuse me of being a klan member for writing about an "uncle" that raised coon-hounds.
