yes

now some of you may ask why on earth they would do that when presumably they had at least an inkling that they were going to shut down schools very immediately, and to those people I say that the government's only real crime is caring about children's education too much

Part of the issue is that it's really, really common for both parents to work now (because our modern pricing of everything is based around that), so schools are basically childcare. Obviously this isn't an attack on families where both parents work (or single parent families), it's just that things are very different to how they were even 30 years ago.

Yep, and the response from the terminally imaginationless is that the only possible solution to this is women staying at home to look after the kids, like they have for all of human history lol...

That does look alarming, and it seems a reasonable assumption that teachers do have a higher rate of infection, however they've compared teacher rates to general population (rather than 'working age') which will skew the data as over 60s have lower rates.

The vaccines are the way out. They should have done this lockdown as soon as AZ was certified, allow the vaccine infrastructure to be sorted and then got the majority of at risk people jabbed very quickly. Hopefully this "lockdown" will help enough to give the vaccine teams a chance to get on top of it.

It really wouldn’t help. This thread is a fraction of where I get my political hit from, and one of the much better and more interesting ones. I’m doing plenty of other stuff too - working out, learning Spanish, but ultimately I just can’t see any way that society escapes from the downward spiral it’s in. If anyone can then please do say so.

The one positive at the moment is that they're at least saying they're going to keep the lockdown in place until the most vulnerable were vaccinated. We should never have left the November lockdown though, what a loving idiotic decision.

Of course I fully expect the lockdown to be lifted on 1st March even if the vaccinations don't go the way they want.

If you consider say, post war social democracy (which while not great is probably something a lot of us would be comparatively happy to live with) came after... the entirety of everything leading up to that in human history, then it perhaps provides an idea that people can and do rebuild after every catastrophe.

It sucks that very rarely do the people responsible get their heads lopped off, and it also sucks that we are the people who have to live through the collapse, but society continues after us.

Probably in fact perverse incentives the other way, since hundreds of deaths a day are priced in at this point but they’re still terrified of appearing alarmist by taking action early. Even worse if early action is actually effective because then it’ll look like it was unnecessary.

Most of us have been fighting so hard since 2015, we're still in the mindframe of "imminent victory possible, keep fighting", it takes a while to get out of that. Before that, it was "victory definitely not possible but might be at some point in the future, do as much as you can be bothered on your pet projects in your spare time to keep the groundwork in place but otherwise pretty much just try to focus on having a nice life".

Basically what I'm saying is, there is almost always a way to improve things in your own life, if not wider society, so just do that for a bit probably. Society's pretty hosed, but if you've done your part (which you have) you should be able to rest easy. Spring's coming, music still exists, even the tories can't cancel some things.

I'm a product manager and I find the whole concept so dull and high-pressured. you're at your best when doing research with customers and working with teams to design things that solve customer problems, but 90% of the role is placating higher ups and getting bogged down in useless strategy because no one else has any direction

Honestly I want to quit, take the time off to train and become a scrum master, because at least then I'm empowering people in a team to be happier when they work, but £1000+ for a mandatory certification is a big ask ):

Yeah agreed, we genuinely had a realistic shot of a socialist government in 2017,* there's now a hell of a lot more of us than there were in 2014, and our views are more normalised. Real change doesn't look possible now, but it still looks a hell of a lot more possible than it did in 2014. Important just to keep on keeping on, do your part, look after yourselves.

*yeah I know the party apparatus will be conspiring to make sure that doesn't happen again, and as we all know centrists are not at all prone to getting high off their own farts and endlessly repeating the same mistakes due to hubris,

I guess if the electorate goes from 45% Tory / 35% Labour / 5% Lib Dem / 5% SNP / 5% Green / 5% Other to 45% Tory / 30% Labour / 2% Lib Dem / 5% SNP / 8% Green / 5% Other / 5% Spunking Cock on Ballot, that's a Tory electoral gain, unless the spunking cocks form a party.

I was ranting about this in an earlier thread. The voting booth doesn't contain a binary lever with Labour on one side and Tories on the other. The 62% not voting for Labour, fine, if you don't like them, you don't have to. The 43% FOR the Tories are making an active choice to vote for the demonstrably bad thing.

Collapsing turnout for one party causes another party's percentage share to rise. The Tories haven't necessarily gained voters, it's just that everyone else may well have lost them.
