No but we're talking about Amphigory's unsmashable house. They put money into alarms instead of real locks so that they can... be notified when all their poo poo gets nicked, whereas I would suggest in such a very real-world scenario you just install real locks.

To be fair, I don't just get a notification, the burglar also gets treated to an ear piercing alarm which I fully expect my neighbours to ignore

3D Megadoodoo posted:

Was it cheaper than just installing Abloys?

Much cheaper

Look, I don't want to come off like a numpty here. I had been thinking we should get a home alarm for a while, then separately I tried my hand at lock picking. When I realised how easy it was, that was the impetus to actually just get the security stuff

All I was trying to say, was - you go through your whole life thinking locks are secure, until you learn they aren't

On one hand, this is true - I lost my keys once and was both amused/horrified at how what appeared to be a vibrator with a small bit on the end of it was able to unlock my front door in about the same amount of time it would take me to use my key.

On the other, having *a lock* is surprisingly enough deterrent for a lot of situations. I've gone most of the past two decades only having one vehicle broken into, but my Jeep Wrangler has been rifled through multiple times when left unlocked (usually, when the doors and/or top aren't installed either).

You bought the cufflink version of a vibrator?

It's a vibrator for someone who has their tongue pierced. You know, for sex stuff.

I ordered some custom print towels from Printful, but they didn't come with strips for hanging, so I got clip-on hanger loops like this. Way easier than sewing on strips of fabric.

Anyone with experience buying gelblasters from Aliexpress? They are legal in my state but looking to have a little fun, probably an SMG style with either Auto or a way to mod to auto.

Easier for sure, but your towel/tapestry/whatever will drape better if you sew a tube onto it rather than loops or clips.

As someone who bought a bunch of aliexpress tools and then moved to ifixit, I suggest you skip that first step. Cheap tools can often cause damage, so you're better off getting something half-decent.

Pry tools tend to be fairly disposable, I'd just take a punt on random ones that look good because you'll be breaking them fairly regularly. Particularly plastic ones.

Then buy something like the xaiomi wiha screwdriver kit which can be had for ~$20 on AliExpress.
https://a.aliexpress.com/_mMjvec5 (I have one, it's very nice)

Edit: I see people disagree with me - I'm talking about stuff that is weak by design so that it doesn't scratch your device. Anything that needs to be strong (like a screwdriver) you should be buying quality.
Cheap tiny screwdrivers are the worst.

Don't skimp on screwdrivers, get Wera or Wiha precision ESD screwdrivers. Pry tools are as said, disposable, just get a bunch of cheap ones and also guitar picks and a good suction cup. Tweezers are also something that is worth paying a bit mor for, because cheap tweezers are garbage, too thick and will just gently caress up everything you work with.

I would agree. The iFixit kit is very reasonably priced for what you get, and I trust the materials in the bits to not turn into chowder immediately. It's incredibly frustrating when your #0 Phillips suddenly becomes a point when you discover an overly-tight screw. Yes, this is experience talking.
For a lot of stuff, the knockoffs can be fine, but that *one* time...

A small order from, like, September made it to the States and then went missing. I've extended the protection period once, and can't extend it again. The seller has been sympathetic, kind, and prompt in their responses.

I've told them I can be patient and want them to get paid; I don't want to cancel. They're asking if I have a Paypal account for an under-the-table refund, which I know is usually bad news because it lets bad sellers get away with it, so to speak. But in this case, I don't want to punish them. It's not their fault, and i do expect this thing to show up eventually.

What should I do? Just let the protection run out, let them get paid, and wait for my package?

Just give yourself an internal threshold of how much of a poo poo you should give about an ali order. I personally set that bar at 2 hours' worth of pay - if the order costs less than that amount (and the seller didn't do anything to make me angry), I just shrug and let it go; potentially reordering the item - maybe even from the same seller
