As Nero Danced posted:What about Sulla? I'll be honest my focus in history was mostly the 19th-20th centuries so I'm rusty. Sulla was the first to bring his Army to Rome to force his will, and after he was there he purged everyone who he considered an enemy. But the army didn't sack the city in the sense of looting and destruction. They did occupy it though. Caesar was similar, he crossed the Rubicon with the 10th Legion and marched on Rome, but the Senate could not raise an army in time so they fled before him.

Hyrax Attack! posted:Why do you say that? Direct cash transfers are very popular and it would be a big boost to Democrat ambitions. I could flippantly say that Democrats seem allergic to doing anything to boost their cause. More seriously, Biden is a deficit hawk who apparently talked the Congress down from $1200 to $600 in this last go round and only came out in favor of $2000 at the last minute to help with the election in Georgia. Now that that election is over and the voters have lost their leverage I think it's a dead letter. The invasion of the capital yesterday is going to push the stimulus off the front page and I don't think anyone will bring it back up. I'd be happy to be proven wrong though.

Biden's argument was that it was better for the Dems to take a smaller deal that could pass now, rather than risk no deal if the Dems lost the GA races (Because McConnell would have felt no pressure to pass any stimulus otherwise). There's absolutely no reason to doubt that he'd sign a bill for $2000 checks if it came across his desk.

I can't find it now, but saw a few references that stated DOD was hesitant to deploy troops due to fear of armed protesters. Could you imagine how bad these images would be if the NG opened fire on these people? How would those images then affect relations with other countries? Would they embolden enemies? Don't get me wrong, every last one of them need to be rounded up and charged with sedition. Criminal charges should also be levied against whomever made the order to have a laughable police/protection force in place, they are complicit in the death of multiple people.

Same as other places across the country that have had dual reactions to the different protestors. it's absolutely not just racism and incompetence. ideology plays a big part in the consistent non-response to increasing right-wing extremism by law enforcement. you can't even blame it all on trump- you can draw a straight line from the non-response to armed occupation of BLM land back in obama days, to the multiple armed occupations of state capitols over the last few years, to yesterday. this didn't happen in a vacuum; law enforcement agencies knew all about this threat and still chose to do nothing about it. when cops are giving cover to right-wing agitators, as they've been caught doing countless times over the years, it's not just because they are racist (but to be clear, they are), it's also because they have chosen an ideological side. when federal law enforcement is ordered to use extreme force with liberal protests but white-glove treatment for conservative ones, it's because their leadership have chosen ideological sides.
