I like the flavor that stuff like that adds, but I don't like when I have to actually sell it to get the gold value. Maybe a compromise where it shows you what the thing is and the value and then it just immediately converts to GP when you pick it up.

re: loot bloat, I think a lot of designers just can't discern when it's appropriate to have tiny incremental loot everywhere versus when it's not. For purposes of this post, when I say "loot" I mean usable equipment for the player/party, not grey-text vendor trash. Like, constantly having piles of poo poo everywhere and hunting for the + 0.5% attack speed increase is fine in something like Diablo, because that's basically all the game is about. You don't do anything in that game except make numbers go up in tiny increments. Nobody gives a poo poo about the story, or characters, or roleplaying. They demand numbers. But it's stupid as gently caress in something like the Witcher, or any Bioware form RPG because it's distracting you from the the poo poo people actually care about in those games. Absolutely nobody is playing the Witcher or Mass Effect or something to hunt for +1 modifiers. They want to see a story, do some roleplaying, and have some combat that hopefully isn't rear end. I think some clowns just get in their head "people like lots of loot!!!" and have no ability to understand why or where. Like how crafting exploding into every frickin game for no reason for a while.

Ghost Leviathan posted:Pretty sure there's evidence they literally do this. Though they kinda did the same thing back in the day, except that first two hours was what they put in the demo. this isn't -explicitly- the goal; the sad truth is that after achievements began to exist, financiers and other execs were able to look at refined statistics of how much players actually engaged with the game. the result is, most players don't play past the first few hours. games have become front-heavy for strictly revenue-driven reasons, because content that <15% of players will ever engage with simply isn't worth the cost of developing. not to say this isn't disgusting but it isn't specifically a nefarious plot to "trick" players into not being able to refund a game... think of it more as incidental rather than insidious. Really they just need to be discern between games that feature pornographic content, and porn that features gameplay. That would make sense but I'm not sure how you could do it without relying on subjective judgement in a lot of cases or asking developers to self-identify it (lol).

If you go to town, clear the 3 bandit camps just outside of town, and do all five of the town quests you'll have visited every location on the map. If you do go exploring, all you're likely to find is the site of a future quest sealed behind a plot lock you can't pick. Beyond that, the same-model-new-gun thing doesn't have to be so eggregious, but they've gone and tried to replace the sheer volume of different guns from New Vegas with just a bunch of the same gun with different skins. You're constantly awash with this poo poo, always sorting through a pile of the same gun to see which one has the best random stat. You're constantly throwing away your old gun for a copy of itself. The whole thing feels like a placeholder for weapon variety that got cut. Open world RPGs really suffer from this problem where you're either not getting new weapons or you're never getting attached to your weapon. I've been thinking these days that they should be dropping weapon mods/upgrades that you attach/use on your favored weapon instead. Let me get attached to my weapons but still give me things to look for still. But don't inundate me with poo poo. Most loot should be obviously vendor trash that I don't need to sort through with maybe 1 or 2 pieces of real good loot every location. Fallout 4, for all that it is poo poo in many ways, really got close to the ideal rate of good loot. You just knew there was 1 magazine or unique item or whatever in every location plus a chance at legendaries.

Remember how Fable 3 had that cool "your unique weapon that grows as you do" system except as soon as you got it there was a mandatory mission where you had to kill hundreds of zombies so p. much everyone got the exact same bone-handled zombie smasher.

But they found that players actually liked there being a bunch of loot they could immediately dismiss. It just adds a bunch of volume to trigger the "woo stuff" feeling in players without overwhelming the player with actual choices. So you're not alone.

That was something I liked about Horizon Zero Dawn, there were very few weapons and the only real difference was the amount of mods you could slap in. This did mean that instead of 80 pointless daggers you'd end up with a stack of pointless useless mods if you hoovered everything up but I like just picking the 4 weapons I wanted to use for a fight and not worrying about comparing similar weapons all the time. And you got the highest 'level' (3 mod slot) weapons comparatively soon in the game.

path of exile is as good as any other diablo ripoff. it's no titan quest but it's ok. way too much marginal poo poo though, the sphere grid is just ridiculous. it's all trash passives like "1% increased damage with two-handed melee weapons." good for a week, good for a month, and certainly the first diablo-alike to dispose of the "replay act1~3 but with second/third wave difficulty" design and go all-in on just making nine distinct story sections. that's respectable.

My thing is if I’m gonna play an ARPG, I’m gonna play Grim Dawn where it just feels better constructed with mix and match classes, skill points that do something, and better loot. And it doesn’t reset my poo poo all the time. Though I also miss Marvel Heroes, that game was completely brain dead and a great stress ball.

true, i guess there are a couple major passives. information overload is the big problem, because there's a point at which you stop giving a poo poo because there's too much to consider and none of it is worth wasting your time thinking about.

Tbf Path of Exile has completely customizable loot filters so trash doesn't even register on your screen. But why a developer would allow loot filtering rather than rethinking why a player should be showered in so much useless trash they have to resort to coding to block it out, that's the real question.

The perfect rpg loot system would be that you have just one gun that you collected upgrades and reconfigurable mods for and could change the same base gun between different configurations like here's the configuration that turns it into a shotgun, here's the one that turns it into a sniper rifle etc, and if you got a mod that applies a certain bonus then every mod of the same type that is strictly worse is immediately flagged as trash. The select weapon button becomes the select weapon configuration button, and you can have custom sub-configurations based on your desired mix of mods (eg a low damage silenced pistol config that fires slowly but excels at headshots vs a dirty harry hand cannon).

Trying to design a "perfect" loot system is a fool's errand akin to the Perfect Pasta Sauce. There are certainly broad strokes you can say are generally good or bad practices, but until the day all human beings like the same thing, there will never a perfect one.

The passives that most affect your character are the ascendency points that you choose at certain levels, which are more akin to a traditional ARPG class. The huge passive tree is more to determine what damage type you use, what defensive layers you use, and whether you're crit or non crit, etc But I've already typed a lot of words just about the most basic aspects of the game, and it would take literally days to explain it all face to face, so it's definitely not for everyone

Unpopular opinion, but Diablo 3 did it right (eventually). You do get a lot of trash, but it's easily mass recycled. When you do get something potentially good, it usually has a real effect on gameplay. Not just a number being slightly higher than what you're using right now, bit actually adding gameplay effects which change how you play the game. Had just about enough of the "1% damage increase to one enemy type" kind of loot.

Diablo 3 is good if you play it as a single player game and don't expect to be able to play if like an MMO or whatever. Each class has a couple armor sets that define your play style, and when you've tried the ones you want that is it. If you take the time to learn the silmarillion-level of game knowledge in path of exile, you can practically play it forever

I feel like that's partially a factor of how combat typically works in these games. People can get really excited about a bit of extra damage in a game like WoW Classic because it helps them clear content, makes content easier on their friends/guildies, and is a status symbol besides. You care so much more about the marginal benefits because you're not just plowing through randomly generated trash mobs over and over.
