Well our switch to Dell as our hardware provider for the enter enterprise is off to an smashing start already. We went live with ordering mid November. We find out this morning that Dell is already experiencing CPU/LED/LCD shortages and the 500+ desktops we ordered in November for our Epic refresh and new hospital tower build are delayed at least another 6-8 weeks. Laptops are delayed even longer and LOL if you think we're getting any 24" monitors from Dell anytime soon either. Thankfully the 2 34" curved Dell monitors I ordered for myself and another tech aren't affected by their shortages and will be here today! My new fancy Dell laptop however I'm not expecting to see until sometime mid march. I know it's not CDW's fault entirely, but surely they could've forecasted out what our needs might be and ensured Dell started to hoard that stuff for us.

People have been WFH for what, 6-10 months if not longer now? Either get your employer to buy you a monitor or get on that $99 special at Officemax. This lady has been bitching about her laptop screen for the whole call. Probably has a poverty 1366x768 Lenovo TN screen.

Nice, my favorite experience like this is that a user one time printed out a screenshot from Google Maps, circled something on it with a market, scanned the image, put the picture in a word document and emailed the word doc.

Thankfully we had some spares, but as far as I can tell, the ticket hasn't even been touched. At this point, I'm tempted to just go to Costco and expense a the X1 Carbon that they sell instead of waiting.

Welp. Between dell taking 10 days for an in person repair even with pro support (40 loving days when we shipped them a repair) and now apple is taking 7+ days for an applecare covered device repair. shortages and delays are growing. poo poo sucks yo. My companys budget is hosed thanks to being airline adjacent so i dont have money to buy a ton of spares and my older loaners are becoming few are far between for good ones. I'm going to actively loving murder in my brain what ever dell tech sent back a precision 5530 with a busted CPU fan after we sent it in for some other repair though.

For the second time in about 2 months the entire datacenter uncleanly shut down. First time was because the chillers at City Hall failed and the backup was down for maintenance(no one told us from HVAC) and the tertiary wasn't tied to the computer room, resulting in everything hitting thermal cutouts. This time the room UPS suffered a critical failure and stopped outputting power of any kind and had to be manually bypassed. Things mostly came back up but between the thermal event and this, but I'm sure the warranty on the vxRails is completely hosed. Did I mention I was going on vacation this week?

Pissing me off: negative survey scores from a customer because I "just went home instead of staying after hours" to "resolve our incredibly urgent case". Translation: they didn't reply to me for over three hours and only replied like an hour after I left for the day about an issue that involved a delivery rule not sending a tiny subset of data to the right A/B testing server because the target server was down Also pissing me off: getting yelled at that I didn't "respect the customer's urgency and set the ticket to urgent even though it isn't what the SLA normally defines as urgent". Why loving have priorities and an SLA in the first place then?

I'm doing a deployment to production tonight that's going to take longer than expected because my co-worker got laid off (along with ten others) today. I thought it was weird that my boss asked me yesterday how things were for tonight when I'm technically the "backup" for this project. Especially when I checked his calendar and noticed he had just gotten off his weekly catchup meeting with my co-worker. I'd worked with this guy for over fifteen years.

Disaster recovery! I get tasked with things like "come up with a plan for disaster recovery" What I would like to do: Take our last gen servers (HPE Gen8), and our secondary SAN, and co-locate them. Sync the sans and if we get hit with a missile, we fire up the new servers and run our VM's. Pretty simple. Right now the secondary san is in a closet at the far end of our building with 2 of our gen 9 servers. 1 of our gen 9 servers and 2 gen 10's are in our main server room with the primary SAN. The current DR plan? We have 5TB of backup space (veaam cloud target) with our datacenter provider. They claim we can spin up 10 VM's for a week at no cost, in the event of a disaster. What the gently caress good would that be and what does that even mean? How big are these VM's? Also we would really need triple that.

Bob Morales posted:Disaster recovery! When somebody says "Disaster recovery", the correct answer is, "What's the scenario? A data center destroyed? Cyber security attack? Network backbones down? Power failure for over multiple days?" The answer to each of these scenarios is not the same, and it's fun watching people's eyes go "oh poo poo" as you enumerate common scenarios that they didn't think of when they just said "disaster recovery".
