This guy makes a decent point about the importance of bringing the poo poo up.
https://twitter.com/djmuel_/status/1347029546273411077?s=19

Having said that, it's not like the two of them have any particularly informed takes. Woolie is very Canadian Liberal a lot of times when poo poo goes down in the US and while Pat hates some capitalism, he's not going to be dropping any educational theory or whatever (I don't think he's ever actually mentioned socialism, notably).

On the other hand, telling chuds to go gently caress themselves is important to do whenever possible so there's that.

I'm enjoying Reggie Souls, but god Woolie is a loving awful coach. I swear all Reggie needs is a few hours to practice off-camera with a) the game, and b) not the Woolie.

Woolie is way too picky about how Reggie is playing the game. And he's actually playing better than most new people I've watched play these games!

Also, just personally, it would suck to have my first Souls game experience be constantly accompanied by hints and warnings and advice. Playing DS1 knowing nothing, for the entire game, was so good.

Agreed, also remember when the group streamed DS with Woolie on the controls? Pat and germanspy was sitting in the backseat with their hands on the wheel

I don't know if you guys are watching the streams or just the YouTube videos of the demon's souls lp but Reggie is more than fine with the hints and advice from Woolie.

I think they've also mentioned that guidance is being provided mainly to help it not drag and be even slower to watch. Granted it's hard to say if that's working or not. Reggie is pretty panicky and has seemed to forget how a shield works or what parries are a few times, so it'd probably be slower going.

The more annoying thing to me is their instance to clear an area before trying another one, makes things feel a bit monotonous watching them brute force some poo poo.

Omi no Kami

I think part of the problem is just to the format, in the sense that yeah- most souls games are best experienced by smashing your head against something in a low-pressure environment. There's a lot of really basic stuff like timing and the existence of the shield that I think would emerge naturally through just playing, which aren't as easy to glue onto when you're trying to keep progression moving for content purposes.

The other issue is that Woolie is just a godawful coach. The man cannot articulate his thoughts to save his life and never says something in five words when twenty would do, so you end up with constant long, rambling explanations and advice that are impossible to process when you're just learning the game. Add on top of that the fact that Woolie apparently cannot understand anything unless he compares it to FGC crap, and those two are playing such a circuitous game of telephone that honestly I think Reggie is doing a great job given LP tax, new to the franchise, and everything else.

The newest Aegis Rim episode is perhaps peak Woolie. Like ten minutes of actual progress followed by 30 minutes of rewatching old scenes and looking poo poo up. :psyduck:

Meanwhile watching Reggie VS Demon Souls is amazing so far. It really is fun watching how someone reacts to that game for the very first time with no previous souls experience. Will be curious to see just how hands off Woolie gets once Reggie is more used to the systems since he's still very much got his hands on the hips.

E: also the Woolie DS streams were better than this because although GS isn't funny, Pat and he are better coaches than Woolie. Which I mean, yeah, they're better at Souls games than Woolie and know when to get to the point.

Although on the flip side Reggie Souls doesn't have Matt drinking and passive aggressively letting everyone know how much he doesn't want to be there. (I checked out the first episode of that stream recently to compare their two experiences, and holy hell that group should've split up years before it did.)

Edit: ...oh my loving god, hearing Reggie say "I want to learn to use my shield more" Woolie then directing him to 4-1 and tell him "Blocking doesn't work against skeletons so you should parry them" is just the chef's kiss of The Woolie Way.

I am holding a live frag grenade.
I was honestly kind of confused when Woolie told Reggie to head to 4-1 next. Like he's using a sword against all the skeleton dudes who take like NO damage from it because it's not a blunt weapon, those skeletons are not meant to feel like minibosses. 2-1 is like the obvious logical progression, not only is it next in line numerically but you can get a ton of weapon upgrade stuff done there. I'm not sure that there's any other place Reggie could go right now that wouldn't be much easier.

Rody One Half

Reggie could always just use his fists and hotswap to his sword for the few non-skeleton enemies, but that would require for him to have a coach who wasn't poo poo and could tell him that.

Woolie had Reggie go to 4-1 because there's a lot of dex weapons and other poo poo to grab there that goes with Reggie's build.

Stream spoilers I guess: They should've just smashed and grabbed then gone to 2-1 but nope. Like if you grabbed the crescent falchion and go to the mine it cuts through the majority of the enemies so easily.

They do eventually start punching things after chat berates Woolie, and fighting the skeletons starts to click with Reggie but the shield is barely used. Parrying them is really effective but so is blocking them first.

Then Woolie shows Reggie the regen build and it's probably going to be Woolie's playthrough all over again but at least Reggie is less of a cow.

Hopefully after this bit they'll be more sensible but this "detour" is pretty painful for now.

I hate how common that myth is. It's the perfect blend of 'the government hates you and is stupid' and 'there's no point trying, the system is against you'.

I mostly enjoy the strong schadenfreude when they're calling game design or story tropes and jokingly-but-not-really pat themselves on the back for being loving geniuses and then their entire asses get shown once it turns out they're overconfident idiots.

Doubling down and arguing about something they're clearly wrong or proclaimed a half-baked take on feels like a scam though, in that they don't say anything actually interesting or insightful but it goes on for hours and you can get tricked into thinking it might go somewhere

You get taxed at X rate for the first Y amount of money you make. If you make enough extra to move up a bracket they dont then retroactively tax the amount in that first bracket the second higher rate. They tax the amount you make over that bracket the new amount. And that scales up. You never loses money by working more, just the extra gets taxed higher.

And these brackets are usually pretty big so it's very unlikely if your working hourly work that adding a few extra shifts would put you up a tax bracket.

Theoretically this means those making a lot of money pay way way more tax in their second and third million.

Without context of the Kotor2 thing, I'm always going to give Canadians some liberty on the "lol america" stuff, as being a Canadian myself, we're inundated with American politics while Americans frequently know jack poo poo about ours.

There's definitely some things that can be grating (the aforementioned misrepresentation of tax brackets that kinda perpetuates that misunderstanding and just generally leaning into the "taxes bad" despite the acknowledgement that they bring us Canadians health care) but I do appreciate that at least Woolie and Pat generally try to be on the right side of social issues? (The Guilty Gear thing excluded.)

Though, I personally find V's "lol cant wait to go back to Alberta" particularly grating as a Canadian because I don't feel like taking pride in that province having lower sales tax is worthwhile given, the whole rest of the deal of that province. It also just extremely reminds me of some dipshits in my highschool who wouldn't shut up about how they couldn't wait to move out to Alberta and get rich and how it was only a matter of time till Alberta secedes.
